Funny how it goes in cycles. When I was in school 74 to 78 W&L had a great b'ball program but was absolutelt awful in football.
Go figure !!!!

When I was at Guilford, the Quakers were 3-36 in football (2-8, 0-10, 0-9, 1-9 ... I personally witnessed one of the wins my freshman year) and the Quakers had a 32-game losing streak that didn't end until I was a senior.  Meanwhile, there were three future NBA players on the basketball team and we won the NAIA national title my junior year.  Talk about feast or famine!  lol

Cycles are part of life. I'll take football over basketball, but that's just because I like watching football more. It's just surprising to me that men's basketball continuously sticks out like a sore thumb. There are other sports W&L seems destined to struggle at, wrestling and the young field hockey program for instance, but of the major sports it seems like men's basketball is the only one where I haven't witnessed at least one really competitive cycle.

I think Doremus Gym is on the hitlist for renovations after the dorms this year, plus a new aquatic center, so it's possible that an improved facility will help eventually. Who knows?

Heard on the news this morning the W&L president makes $900,000 + per year, 62nd highest in the country for all colleges/universities. Reduce his compensation package by half, invest the difference into the b'ball program and you'll have a winning program !!!!!

I won't disagree that college presidents, including W&L's, make too much money, but that number is misleading. I think his salary is in the $300-$400K range, but he had some deferred compensation that came due in 2011 (the measured year). President Ruscio has been at W&L for quite a while, so depending on how his previous compensation as Dean of Students and whatever other positions he's held fall out, he could have some years where he gets big paydays.

On the other hand, at least the DIII presidents are, for the most part, the best compensated people on campus. Sure is better than at DIII football and basketball factories where the coaches make huge multiples of the presidents' salaries...

I guess you meant to say at D1 factories, but you're right, D3 institutions for the most part, keep sports in it's proper place.
And College Presidents are paid too much, don't even get me started on the subject.

Guilford travels to Rocky Mount tonight to play NC Wesleyan ... last game for the Quakes until the 28th and 29th at RMC's classic.  In the Ashland event, the Quakers and the Yellow Jackets alternate games with Dickinson and Birmingham-Southern, both of whom currently only have one loss.

NCWC is 4-4.  Against the bible colleges, the Bishops are 4-0, but 0-4 against more traditional competition.  They have two wins against Mid-Atlantic Christian, which I think used to be called Roanoke (NC) Bible College.  Guilford played RBC a couple of times about 10 years ago and they were the worst collegiate level team I think I had ever seen.  A third win is against Bob Jones University ... I didn't realize they played intercollegiate sports.

Dickinson is 6-1 with games against 4-3 CUA tonight and 5-2 Alvernia tomorrow.

BSU is also 6-1, including a 90-42 win last night over Huntingdon. Are the Panthers that good or are the 0-6 Hawks that bad?

Just noticed VWC dropped an OT home game to CNU, 83-80, for their first loss of the season.  I didn't see the game or check other stats in the box, but 15 of 29 FTs by the Marlins jumped out at me ... not cutting it, especially when the game goes to overtime.

Good luck at NCW. Is the ODAC doing very well with in it's OOC schedule ? I'm not keeping up but it seems GC and VWC are the only two winning on a regular basis.

An 11 day layoff took it's toll on the Marlins for sure, especially at the FT line.  However, they squandered a 12 pt lead making some freshman mistakes.  A young team will do that.  No excuses however, CNU has a good team and in the OT CNU was the sharper team.  They hadn't beaten the Marlins since 2001.  It's a great rivalry and will always remain so.  Despite the many errors committed by the Marlins, they almost pulled it out.  Now on to a tough Mary Washington team at 5pm.  Let's hope the Marlins rebound and fare better tonight.  Considering they were picked to come in 3rd in the ODAC, they are still a force in the league.  Good luck to all the teams this week.

Good luck at Mary Washington and safe travels. Win another OOC game for the ODAC.

Thanks, tfa.  Not sure of the latest data, but the ODAC has been in the Top 3 this season of all DIII conferences in winning percentage versus OOC ... in the .710-.712 range.
