Ben Strong on the NY Knicks summer league roster this year.
Yeah, saw this on GC's web page today.  He's been a pro for 7 years now ... hope he can make a spot with an NBA club!

For the first time since 1948 and for the 26th time in program history, the Quakers will face UNC ... this time on November 6 in Chapel Hill:

Go Guilford!!  A win would eclipse Chaminade over (Ralph Sampson's) Virginia as the greatest upset in college basketball history!!  More realistically, being within 20 at halftime would be a coup.  (IWU played Illinois (when UI was an NCAA finalist, and actually led in the second half, though the final was about as expected. :P)

Well, we did beat Elon to start the 2006-07 season, but I have no illusions here ... but it'll be great for the team to visit the Smith Center.  My nephew's HS team won a North Carolina state championship on that floor and it was a big deal to him and the rest of our family.  Dave Odom '65 has helped us set up games with South Carolina, WFU and now UNC the last few years.  Dave was once Head Coach at the first two universities and, of course, knows Roy Williams at North Carolina.  Playing Davidson with Stephen Curry was also a big deal ... 107-83, I think.

Guilford Assistant Coach Caleb Kimbrough '08 with 2007 National DIII Player of the Year Ben Strong '08 at the New York Knicks Summer League game in Las Vegas:

The Guilford College family mourns the passing of former Quaker and NBA basketball star, Bob Kauffman, at the age of 69.  Bob, a 6'8" center, still holds Guilford career marks for scoring and rebounds.  He was the third pick overall and the #1 draft pick of the Seattle SuperSonics in 1968.  In addition to Seattle, Bob also played for the Bulls and Hawks, but his best years included three straight All-Star game appearances with the Buffalo Braves (now LA Clippers) in '71-'73.   Rumor has it that Bob showed up in Greensboro from Scarsdale, NY with his basketball gear and a modest amount of clothes in a small bag on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle in 1964 ... little did we know the impact his great career would have on Guilford basketball.  His jersey number was retired, along with five other great players of both genders, in a 2009 ceremony officiated by Dave Odom after a game with RMC (jerseys also retired include fellow NBA players Lloyd "World" B. Free and M. L. Carr).  Despite their loss in a hard-fought ODAC game, my respect and appreciation for the RMC coaching staff and players for attending the ceremony.  A classy move that says volumes about their character and their love of the game and its history.

I've had this info for some time, but didn't want to undercut the new coach.  Now, that I assume all of the horses are in the barn, here's my very unofficial list of RMC recruits:

6-8 Luke Neely  - Woodberry Forest School, VA
6-6 Montese Adams – Fuqua School , Farmville, VA
6-5 Jon Nowell – Blair Academy, NJ
6-4 Donzelle Dunn – Hampton Christian, VA
6-4 Grayson Midulla – Glen Allen High, VA
6-4 Darryl Williams – Glenelg Country Day, MD.
6-4 Jaire Peery – Chancellor High, Frederickburg, VA

On the surface that looks like a solid recruiting class with ample height. I think the key for the Jackets this season will be replacing all the experienced guards who graduated. Coach Davis did a good job of getting Rip Engel quality minutes and experience, but at the end of close games last season he was relying most on his seasoned guys -- Badger, Walker and Hamilton, who are all graduated. Taylor, Davis and Wilson will have to fill that void.

Envidently they added a transfer from the Naval
Academy also. Word in Ashland is that this may be best recruiting class they
have ever had...must be nice.

Given what they lost (Hassell, Holmes, Badger, Hamilton, Walker, Jackson, Sullivan, Fromang -- all of whom except Fromang saw plenty of floor time over 4 years) they need a good recruiting class with some guys who can help right away. Not knocking the returning guys. I'm sure they will compete at a high level. But there is only one senior this season. In a lot of ways it is like putting together a new team. Most of the guys coming back have not been on the floor together much, if at all. I'm pretty sure the Jackets lost more than any other ODAC team after last season.

That would be Daniel Noe (6-5), originally out of Bishop Ireton.  He actually started several games for the Naval Academy, a big pickup for RMC.

I saw him play once his senior year for Ireton and was impressed enough to want him for Scranton, but learned he had chosen Navy by then.

The Marines came for a 3rd straight year this week to VWC for leadership and strength training, starting at 5 am in the mud.  It was punishing to say the very least.  Coach Macedo and Coach  Bonner also participated.  Don't know many coaches who would do this..Videos on Facebook at Virginia Wesleyan Men's Basketball.  A great idea for teams to get them ready for a long season. Go Marlins!

marlinpg10

D3 news has ranked the Marlins #2 in their annual preseason ranking. The Marlins return a very strong group to go with a very good recruiting class which could have up to 3 freshmen see significant time this year for the Marlins. Look forward to another great year of ODAC basketball.

VWC will be very good this season. They are absolutely stacked at the guard positions. Alot of guys that can play and can shoot it very well. Khory Moore will have another great season. Look for those guys to once again contend for an ODAC crown and try to make another deep tourney run. Macedo has those boys rolling
