Jackets hang on for 10 point win.  It was a game of attrition, with 4 players injured on the bench by the end of the game.  2 coming into the game and two during the game.

Would have been really discouraging if they hadn't been able to hold on and win. Thankfully the quick start and outstanding first half were enough. I think it is also encouraging that they were able to do it using some players who hadn't previously seen a lot of floor time this season.

Winning these two games, albeit against lesser competition, is a move in the right direction.  The play last night was much improved over previous games, so maybe Coach is finding the right combinations.  Losing three players at the end of first semester, all sophomores, smells of academic issues.  If so, hopefully, they can work harder and return to the team.

Led by Will Freeman's 18 and Carson Long's 15, Guilford (5-4) pulled away from the Pitt-Greensburg Bobcats (6-3) last night, 89-57.  In the first game, the Greensboro Pride rallied to top Dickinson, 92-87.  GCP and GCQ switch opponents tonight with GCP facing UP-G at 5 and The Quakers playing the Dickinson Red Devils at 7 pm.

Wesley was good enough to beat VWC by one point in the first game of the season. And VWC is now 5-4. The announcers were commenting last night on the performance of ODAC teams against non-conference competition is not as strong as in past seasons. CNU and Averett have both done well against the ODAC. CNU is currently 9-0 and ranked #11 by d3hoops. That ranking could improve in the next poll. VWC will likely drop out of the top 25 leaving the ODAC with no ranked teams. Will be interesting to see how the ODAC race goes. Guilford at Crenshaw on Saturday.

W&L topped Methodist for what it is worth. Frostberg St today. But I definitely feel like the ODAC is missing something this year. The traditionally good teams are looking decidedly mediocre.

Another interesting comment from the RMC announcers was that if VWC drops out, it would be the first time sine 2008 that an ODAC team was not in the weekly poll.  That's quite a run!

Yes, I remember that comment. I'd guess that the only other conferences with an equally impressive (or better) run are the UAA, NESCAC, and CCIW. As I said, that's a guess. Happy to have any fact checkers let me know if that's right.

I must say that the R-MC announcers are doing their homework as they made a similar observation last night about the overall strength of the conference and the teams currently with the best records are not the usual suspects. H-SC is the only perennially strong team with a solid record at 7-2. Roanoke is 8-1, Lynchburg 8-3 and Randolph 7-3. R-MC, VWC, and Guilford are, so far, not doing as well as they have over the past 5-6 years. And there may be more parity in the conference this year than in the past.

I frequently watch games from around the country and there are a lot of good announcers out there -- plus some bad ones -- and the R-MC guys, in my opinion, are among the top five I've listened to.

W&L with a nice 2nd half comeback to win by one over Frostburg State. From my cheap seat on a 5x7 tablet screen it looked like W&L got the benefit of some questionable officiating in the final minute -- both calls and non-calls. I usually don't comment on officiating when I am a partisan fan, but I had no dog in this fight. If anything, I was rooting for W&L, but not enough to feel partisan.

Shame about the home cooking. Never a fan. What you get is usually taken double at some point. I didn't see the game so I'll just be happy with the win and try not to mutter too much the next time it goes the other way.

I have no idea if it was "home cooking" and, as I noted, I didn't have the best seat in the house. The officials were right there. The announcers did comment on one non-call that they thought could have been a foul on W&L that resulted in a turnover by Frostburg on an inbounds play and gave the ball back to the Generals. I think it was right after that when W&L got the final two points that won the game. Would have to look at the play-by-play to be sure. And you are correct that there will surely be a game when W&L comes out on the short end of the officiating. In the end it's just a game -- and as my high school math teacher used to say every time we groaned when he announced a test: "A hundred years from now you won't care what you make on this test." He was right. It's much less than 100 years and I already don't care. I'm sure the same philosophy applies to this game.

For those interested, after yesterday's games the ODAC has moved from 18th to 13th out of 44 D3 conferences in how they have fared against D3 non-conference opponents. Much of this has to be due to the many ODAC non-conference wins over the past three days.

Happy New Year to everyone around the ODAC!

GO JACKETS!!!!!

Happy New Year everyone.  Host Guilford and fellow intracity DIII school Greensboro completed the sweep of visiting Pitt-Greensburg and Dickinson on Wednesday.  Greensboro handily beat the cold-shooting UP-G Bobcats and Guilford, despite playing poorly, hung on to top Dickinson 46-43 when a buzzer-beating 3-point attempt by the Red Devils rattled out.  The Quakers improve to 6-4, 1-0 and the Pride move to 5-4 with their 5th straight win.

Outstanding win today for VWC!  The Marlins trailed by as many as 15 points early, but came back strong down the stretch to knock off perennial regional power Emory, 71-68 in OT at the beach. VWC found the leader is has been looking for in senior Nick Doyle who scored a game-high 19 points, including the last five in OT, to pace the Marlins to the win.  Aaron Sturdifen also came through big with five OT points!  It was encouraging to see the comeback effort in a team that has been struggling to get things going consistently.  Hopefully this win will be the springboard to a strong showing in the 2016 portion of the schedule!  Keep it going VWC!
