The perception is that new coach is making some decent strides rather quickly???

Captains 74, Hornets 71

NEWPORT NEWS — A pair of late 3-pointers pushed host Christopher Newport University past Shenandoah University in the first round of the Crowne Point Plaza Captains Classic on Friday night.

Leading 69-67 following a Kwa McDonald 10-foot jumper with 2:14 remaining, Shenandoah (6-4) saw Christopher Newport (8-2) hit 3-pointers on consecutive trips down the floor to turn that two-point deficit into a four-point lead.

McDonald had a chance to tie the game with five seconds left but he missed a runner in the lane. After CNU made 1 of 2 from the line with three seconds remaining, senior Aaron Patterson missing a 25-foot 3-pointer that would have tied the game as time expired.

McDonald led the Hornets with 16 points with Jonah Meredith and Christopher Chaney adding 12 points each.

Derrick Perry had eight rebounds and Meredith seven to help SU to a 41-39 advantage on the glass.

The loss puts Shenandoah into today's 4 p.m. consolation game versus No. 17 New Jersey City. The Gothic Knights lost 72-56 to Johns Hopkins in Friday's opening game.

A so-so weekend for the ODAC -- 9 wins, 10 losses in non-conference games. Eight teams played twice: HSC and SU lose twice; RMC wins twice; LC, W&L, Randolph, and Roanoke split, as does E&H -- losing for the first time, but to a traditionally strong Wooster team. There was a time recently that Wooster was the winningest program in D3 over a certain stretch of years. They have won 23 or more games in 10 of the last 11 seasons, the lone exception being last season when they won a mere 21  :). In single games -- all played today -- VWU loses while BC and GC get wins. The Quakers victory was over #18 Skidmore, so a good win to have heading into all-out ODAC play.

Four ODAC games tonight and a total of 17 over the next eight days (Wed. 1/3 - thru Wed. 1/10). The only days with no games are Fri. 1/5 and Mon. 1/8. Ten teams play three times in that stretch and two (Roanoke and Randolph) play twice. At the end of this stretch all teams will have played five conference games. Good luck and safe travels to all the teams.

The three teams that were undefeated in conference all won tonight by decent margins -- E&H at GC, VWU at HSC, and RMC at home over SU. W&L, also undefeated in conference, plays at Lynchburg tomorrow. BC eked out a one point win in OT at EMU.

After 15 years, Coach Kirby Dean will leave EMU at the end of the season.  I was SID when he arrived as a Frosh.  To me, he exemplifies what DIII athletics can do.  Bring a kid who "just wants to play ball" and turn him into a student, scholar and athlete, but more importantly someone who gave back to the school and who touched the lives of a ton of kids.  Thanks Coach Dean! http://www.emuroyals.com/sports/mbkb/2017-18/releases/20180104h394rd

^^^ Wow. Tough to lose a coach like that. Best to him...and to EMU in selecting a new coach.

Surprising result in that E&H vs GC game. Also, Bridgewater and W&L are both near the top of the standings. Still very very early in ODAC play but this year again looks like a wide open conference

Overlooking the Wasps may be a mistake this year.

LC erases a 12 point halftime deficit to make it a close, back and forth game the last 5 minutes, but W&L's Murtha gets a bucket with 7 seconds left to win it for the Generals 83-81. Four teams now 3-0 -- E&H, W&L, VWU, and RMC.

The Wasps are good ... simple as that.  With that said, however, for whatever reason, GC has not jelled this year.  Honestly though, even if Guilford had played better last night, E&H was the superior team in this game.  Probably obvious, but I'm dismayed at the 5-7 (1-2) start by the Quakers.  I sure hope the second half of the season will be better, but congratulations to the Wasps on a well-played game.

I'm just going to leave this one hanging out there, because it's kind of hard to believe. It's not that high of a benchmark... W&L is 3-0 in the ODAC for the first time in 20 years.

^^^ That required a little research.  :)

It was on the game notes, but yeah, someone in the SID office had to do it.

In that case, that may have been before the "work-study" student doing the research was born.

In the game between two 3-0 teams E&H goes to 4-0 at home over VWU. Both 0-3 teams lost at home -- Randolph to RMC and EMU to GC. HSC lost at SU. Tomorrow we find out if W&L can go to 4-0 for the first time in XX years when they host BC.
