SA was still playing 11 man football when I was in high school and was coached by Dale Marks. Our AD/HBC was very fond of Coach Marks and had nothing but the best to say of him. The same couldn't be said for the guy in the next county over.  ::)

Also know Rob Stanley well. He taught me many things in my younger days including "use your flipper" and "get skinny", although the latter was harder to do.

So rmc1982 isn't left in the dark...Rob Stanley and I graduated from the same school...just many years and a name change after.

Small world I guess.

Good to hear from some former students of the small, private schools that were/are in the same conference...I graduated from York Academy where my Dad coached.  Sadly, they closed in '94 and he had a brief 3 or 4 year stint at Amelia Academy...prior to York, he was at Brunswick and Broadwater, so I have an affection for the VCC, as I grew up in it.  Sorry, Scots13, but I wish Fuqua was still PEA...I think they got away from their roots and tradition in trying to become something they weren't.  I also wish Isle of Wight Academy, which is flourishing, hadn't left for the Metro Conference...I guess I'm just old school and don't like change sometimes.
I graduated from SA in 1978 and my kids all went there...my last(my youngest son) graduated in 2016- won two state Championships in baseball...We're also flourishing right now...Dale could move back to 11 man if he wanted but i think he likes the 8 man challenge....It really is a fast interesting game to watch!...I fondly remember matchups with all you mentioned( especially PEA-Now FUQUA)...we still have rivalries with IWA in certain sports but since they grew and moved up we dont play them in states anymore.... Nice to know some fellow VCC..( and old VAAC) compadres here!

I've heard rumblings of most small schools looking to move to 8 man and have VISAA sponsor 8 man for one division. STAB, Covenant, VES are among those who are thinking of it.

We had some good football games against SA when I was in school. The place-kicked punts always through me for a loop.

rmc1982, too bad I didn't have a chance to talk to you at the H-SC/R-MC game.  It would have made the trip a little more pleasant.  I don't think I had ever matched you up with your screen name.

Glad to hear that your children went to SA and that the school is doing well...those championships are something your family and school should be very proud of...quite an accomplishment!  When I was a junior in '89-'90, SA had the Applewhite twins who were pretty decent basketball players, but even better football players.  Speaking of the VAAC, when my Dad was at Broadwater in the late 70s, he was able to coordinate w/R-MC to have the boys basketball conference tournament there...thought I'd mention that since you're a Yellow Jacket.  Of course, for those of us that are old enough, we all know the connection between TA and R-MC w/Nunally, which is pretty cool...you probably also know Jesse Hellyer, who played at R-MC, then coached at TA when I was in school.  It's fun reminiscing!

Ruth Murphy overstayed her welcome--plain and simple. And to your point about Fuqua still being PEA...a lot of us wished we were still PEA. I was a member of the 50th graduating class of PEA/Fuqua. Of the 45 or so people in my class, at least 40 of us had either one or both parents attend PEA, which is probably not the norm at the school now.  What should have been a proud moment and a celebration was not had because Ruth Murphy successfully disassociated the school with anything that happen prior to '93.  Can't really expect someone to donate money if you've basically said pi$$ on you, jack.  Not to mention she was the mastermind of the plan to show Skeeter Fore the door after nearly 50 years. (I'm sure some of you guys have heard that name before...)

A corporation like Smithfield certainly helps, but I digress. J.B. Fuqua helped turn around the financial troubles of PEA and helped the school flourish for a couple years...
My 17 year old self would die if he knew I said this, but good for IWA to have a partnership with a meaningful regional corporation.

I sure do miss the football and basketball seasons when things got heated between schools. Tidewater used to field a football team, Southampton played 11 man and not in NC, Kenston Forest, Brunswick, Blessed Sacrament (Huguenot for you older guys  ;D) . Everyone getting mad at each other, not wanting to play because it a sure bet you'll lose (cc: BA and KFS football teams) is for the birds. Almost 60 years of tradition and they let an old woman screw it up. Shameful.

My Dad knew Skeeter well...he was/is a staple and legend at PEA/Fuqua...if she'd been successful in getting rid of him, I'm sure there would have been a bounty on her head! :)  When PEA became Fuqua, I know they got rid of the boys basketball coach, who'd done a great job of turning that program around...I'm sure there were others that met the same fate, unfortunately.

I miss the old rivalries too...and, yes, BSH will always be the Huguenot Rebels to me.  Some of those rivalries still exist, but there's no longer a Larry Clary or Dennis Moore at KFS and BA respectively, who were good coaches...I think I've become the older guy that says, "the teams we played when I was in school were a lot better than the ones today", or something to that affect. ;D

Larry Clary and Dennis Moore were a couple of the good ones.  Coach Fore had no issue about letting you know how he felt; never once did he have a cross word to say about those two.

Joke's on Ruth, though. Coach Fore's house sits about 30 yards from campus. She never really got "rid" of him. He still piddles around campus and helps maintain the fields with ol' Bozo.

It's sad to think some of the guys that didn't realize how good we had it, especially guys my age.

I don't know the details surrounding the Skeeter situation, but I assumed she wasn't successful, since he's still listed in the school directory...even though it sounds like he's not as involved w/the school, he deserves to write his own ending.  It's men like him and Benny Vaughan at IWA that deserve a ton of credit for the success of their respective schools....

From what I can remember, she wanted him gone as head football and baseball coach and as AD to bring in a young guy that happened to bring more diversity into the administration. Not saying it's not a worthwhile endeavor in the 2010's to make hires like that given the history of small academies in our small part of the world (especially PEA and the Farmville area), but you don't force out a man that's given his life to the school. He (replacement AD) was gone a couple years later and we had the VCC meltdown. I think the hire was a way to get attention off of Ruth after the verbal vomiting episode she had while being interviewed by WaPo.

I think he's still doing drivers ed as well as the field maintenance, which is more or less a habit after 50 years.  The AD we have now is also the boys basketball coach and a great guy. He had the same position at Meadowbrook in Richmond I believe. His son is actually committed to play at Guilford next year.

From what I can remember, she retired 3 or 4 years ago.

Two matchups today between top 6 teams -- GC at W&L and BC at E&H. RMC will need to bounce back from its home loss to EMU and beat Randolph to stay in at least a tie for second. If that happens, and GC wins, the Jackets will be alone in second.

Seatfiller

Roanoke with a big win at EMU today 73-65. In other odac news:

Guilford beats W and L 81-70

Bridgewater loses at E and H 73-90

HSC beats SU at home 67-65

VWC beats Lynchburg 78-63.

You're alone in 2nd.

I think W&L got to surprise almost everyone 1 time through the league. Not looking so pretty on the repeats!
