I'll also add that HSC is a much improved team and will be very competitive as the season progresses.

R-MC 82 - H-SC 64 in a non-conference game. Buzz Anthony with 27 points on 9-13 shooting (6 of 9 from three), Corey Bays with 16 (6-11/4-8) and freshman Miles Mallory with five blocks. Only watched a little bit of the late part of the game on my phone. Couldn't tell much, but H-SC was cutting a 28 point Jacket lead down to 15.
That's quite an efficient boxscore for Buzz.  I think Coach Kimbrough will help the Tigers improve.

Key to the RMC/HSC game was fouls and FTA.  24 RMC fouls to HSC 10.  32 HSC FTA to only 7 for RMC.  I'm not blaming the refs, but this game was a bigger differential if not for those stats.

To me this is connected to the turnover question posed by scotth on the previous page. If a team plays aggressive defense and tries to create turnovers then there are a lot of situations where a turnover might occur if, in the judgment of the official a foul did not occur, changing the balance between fouls and turnovers created.

I've been watching D3 basketball in person for 19 seasons now and online for about a dozen. Not as long as a lot of people on these boards, but long enough to have become more understanding of officiating and officials. Also, points of emphasis in officiating have changed in that time. I'd love for someone who understands what drives these changes to post a primer here. It's interesting stuff.

H-SC doesn't commit many fouls in general, going in teams were only shooting 16.75 FTs a game. This was a 60-possession game for both teams, UVA ranked last in D1 in pace last year at 59.4 possessions a game, so this is some pretty slow basketball being played.

Macon had 37 possessions end in a three point attempt and they had another 17 end in a jump shot attempt, based on the play by play. There were some possessions where they had multiple jumpers and/or three pointers and thus those were only counted as one possession.

Taking threes and jumpers on 90% (54 out of 60) of your possessions isn't generally the formula for drawing fouls or getting free throw attempts against a team that is generally doing a pretty good job of keeping teams off the free throw line by not committing fouls.

Meanwhile, H-SC relies on scoring in the post, dribble drives, and cuts to the basket, which are far more likely to draw fouls and free throws. And when they aren't turning it over, they are actually running pretty efficient basketball as they actually lead the ODAC in field goal percentage at 47.3% and rank 4th in the ODAC in FTA per game at 21.6.

Randolph-Macon is by far shooting the fewest free throw attempts per game at just 12.2, even if you take out the H-SC game they are at just 13.2, which is still easily the fewest per game in the league.

Great hoops win for the Hokies!

New Top 25 poll, RMC rockets from #24 to #12, and Guilford unchanged at #19.  Congrats to both!

I see Colin Molden only got 7 minutes tonight for E&H, did he get hurt again?

#19 Guilford 62 (6-1), Methodist 60 (3-2)  Men
#25 Guilford 67 (4-0), Pfeiffer 39 (2-5)  Women

Tough game tonight with the Monarchs.  Tied at 29 at the half and at 60 with a less than 30 seconds to go.  MU fought back from a 57-49 deficit.  I'll say it again:  You have to hit your FTs down the stretch!  Gregory (19) and Ward (15) for the Quakers.   Burden and Dearman with 15 and 14, respectively, for MU.  Methodist's Garren Dearman is the older brother of Guilford freshman Tyler Dearman.

In the women's game, Pfeiffer was hot on threes in the first quarter to lead 18-11, but got smoked 23-4 in the 2nd to fall 67-39.

Final in Harrisonburg:  Guilford 71, EMU 52

I didn't get to attend or watch, but looks like GC was mainly in control.  Recap said the Quakers had a 10-0 run to start the game with each starter getting 2 points and another 10-0 run early in the 2nd half with the same scoring balance.  GC travels to Roanoke Wednesday night.
