GREAT GAME and great crowd at the Fish Tank last night!! Hard fought and back and forth the entire 2nd half the Marlins only mistake was putting Buzz Anthony on the line in clutch situations late in the game and he made them pay with 6 in a row and the Jackets got a stop or two at the end to squeak out a win! Still don't like this conference format where we only play VWU once in the regular season but it is what it is!! We should see them again in the tournament if it all plays out and it should be another barn burner!

No one likes the conference format for the overstuffed sports. But since they keep adding members to keep football afloat, many of the rest of the sports pay the price. When you have 13 (ex: men's basketball and soccer) or 14 (ex: women's soccer), it's just not a good system. For sports over 12 they need to go to divisions and have home and home schedules. And then, if they want, they can try and match up the expected strength programs to have SoS help for a few cross division games. Otherwise you get the crap like H-SC hosting the men's soccer tournament without playing the best teams in the conference. Either that or they need to split, with a new conference willing to take the remaining public CAC schools, maybe poach one or two more from the USASAC (before they announce a split since they are up to 18 members), and just have a cooperative agreement for the sports with limited membership.
jknezek- I understand the "Why's" of what's going on but it always seems like its HSC, Guilford, W&L, or VWU that we only get one game with and it screws with outcomes and seedings at the end of the schedule and really isnt fair to either school. I agree Divisions would help solve that and the powers that be in the ODAC should rectify this problem. The conferences that the state schools like MWU and CNU are in don't necessarily make a good fit for us because of the difference in sizes of the schools but really doesent always make a difference in competitiveness. I think that divisions within the ODAC may be a better fix for now.

I don't disagree. And the ODAC charter prevents the public schools from joining, which is why I said they would have to go into the "new" conference. That being said, I think divisions would work best as well. With 16 conference basketball games you could easily go 7&6 for men's divisions. Basically home and homes for 10-12 games and 4 crossovers. So you would play 10 of 13 ODAC teams every year and in every player's 4 year cycle you would play every ODAC team at least once home and away and almost all of them more than that.  Of course the unbalanced nature means one side would get a few more non-conf games, but in sports like basketball that's hardly a problem.

It's harder in soccer, where you get 8 conference games for men this year and 10 for women. Obviously you'd not go home and homes in division, but with 7&7 (women's soccer), you'd have 6 division games and 4 crossovers. It would work out the same where every player would get to go home and home with every cross division team, and go home and home twice with every division team in every 4 year cycle. Men's soccer with 8 games gets a bit trickier. 6 and 2 or 5 and 2 is kind of messy as you would get every ODAC team, but miss one of the cross division teams either home or away in every 4 years for the 6 division and miss 4 of the cross division teams for either home or away in every 4 years. Of course going to 9 conference games would solve that issue.

Regardless, this pick and choose business that they did with soccer had an ugly consequence for tournament hosting. Arguably it worked of course, since the ODAC got an at-large and the 2 best conference teams made the tournament, but it's just a bad look to have H-SC hosting without playing either of the top teams in the conference.
Don't take an embarrassing loss to a bad VWU team that couldn't beat a single other team that finished above 8th and W&L hosts the soccer tournament.

That was one tough defensive game at Roanoke. Final: R-MC 52, Roanoke 42. R-MC very fortunate to come away with a win. Getting shots was hard enough. Making them was even harder.

True. W&L lost the textbook trap game. Between Wed home games against Lynchburg and Roanoke they lost on the road to Va Wes because the Marlin goalie had the game of his life. It happens in soccer.

Losing when a GK has a game of their life type performance would be acceptable if it weren't for the fact he made only six saves, SIX. That six-save performance ranks merely tied for 7th for most saves in a game in his college career. That wasn't the best performance of his year, college career, or life.

The real problem was the offense managed just 12 shots. They went 2-3 in the games in which they had 12 or fewer shots.

Anyways, back to basketball.

Miraculously Hampden-Sydney is two wins away from securing a winning regular-season record. THey better pick up at least one of those wins in the next two against Ferrum and at Shenandoah because their four following games are at Roanoke, Virginia Wesleyan, at Guilford, at Randolph-Macon. So I expect the Tiger's ODAC record to start coming back down to Earth a bit because that's about as tough of a four-game ODAC stretch as you'll see in the ODAC this year.

Luckily they get a home game against Bridgewater to close out the regular season to hopefully rebound and grab some momentum heading into the ODAC Tournament. A big development though is the injury to Chase Turner. He played 18 minutes, got hurt and, if I remember correctly, had to be helped off the court and never returned. He is a high-level perimeter defender despite providing next to nothing in the way of scoring. And H-SC doesn't exactly have much depth even when healthy.

Meanwhile W&L with a big win on the road at a hot Lynchburg team. Tharon Suggs was flaming hot in the first half but never got anything going in the second half. But despite that it came down to the wire.

The Quakers rebounded against Shenandoah yesterday, 85-52, in Greensboro.   Kyler Gregory led the way with 18 and the team hit 13 threes.  SU led 16-14 before Guilford ran off 20 unanswered to take a 34-16 lead ... that was, effectively, the ballgame.  At 13-5, 5-4, the Quakers need to finish strong to land in the top 6 for the tournament.  The Hornets fall to 6-12, 3-6.

Time for a marathon!

Thursday, Hoopsville will be on the air for at least nine hours in the 7th Annual Hoopsville Marathon Show.

This year's show will feature coaches, administrators, and many others around Division III to give us a sense of the season to date and what is to come. There is only a month or so left in the regular season, so there is plenty to talk about.

For more information about the show and its impact, click here.

The show's guest list is below with a rough idea of when they were scheduled to appear during the live show.

The marathon is also a chance to fundraise of the show. Many fans of Hoopsville ask often how they can give to the program so we can continue doing our work into the future. In the first few years of the Marathon, the fundraising side was an important aspect. However in the last few years, we have shyed away from fundraising as we tried to find other means to financially run the program. After requests from many, we are do have a few ways fans can contribute.

Hoopsville is presented by D3hoops.com and airs from the WBCA/NABC Studio. You can watch the entire Marathon show LIVE in the video player above. We will effort to turn around podcast episodes of the entire show. They will be available to the right (after the show is off the air).

Guests appear on the Hoopsville Hotline presented by BlueFrame Technology.

And don't forget to interact with the Dave and guests. You can use the social media option to the right and even email (dave.mchugh@d3sports.com) questions to the show.

When it comes to the game of basketball, we love celebrating not only the student-athletes in Division III, but also those who help carry the game forward sometimes outside of the spotlight.

Sunday on Hoopsville, we celebrate those who have made the game of basketball, especially at DIII, so great. Coaches who continue to excel in different parts of the country and programs who play for more than just themselves.

Hoopsville is presented by D3hoops.com and airs from the WBCA/NABC Studio. You can watch Thursday's Marathon Show in the following ways:

Jake Hahn with a classic point forward stat line in Farmville today with 14 points, 8 boards, 8 assists (which accounted for 18 points), 4 steals, 3 three pointers, and only 2 turnovers.

Yesterday in the ODAC:

Randolph gets destroyed at Guilford 39-72

EMU wins at Bridgewater 80-67

Lynchburg loses at Roanoke in a close one 65-75 (Roanoke was up almost the entire game but could never get a big enough lead against Lynchburg to really put it away, they hit FTs at the end for the final result.  This snaps a 4 game losing streak for Roanoke)

Ferrum loses in a close one at Hampden Sydney 68 to 74

Shenandoah loses big at Randolph Macon 59-85

Washington and Lee beats Emory and Henry 100-87

Final in Greensboro:  Guilford 72, Randolph 39

Randolph jumped out to 7-0 and 9-2 leads at Guilford, but those were the peaks for the WildCats.  After that, it was all Quakers as they ran to a 40-19 halftime lead and a 41-point lead at 68-27.  All seventeen players were in for Guilford, with RaC closing the gap to 33 against the reserves in the final minutes.

Two memorable dunk tries for forward Liam Ward: one successful off an alley oop assist on the right side and one an ignominious and emphatic two-hand bounce shot off the back rim on a drive down the middle.  Both were highlight reel material.

Final in Lexington:  W&L 90, GC 61

When the Quakers are good, they're very good, BUT when they're bad, they're very bad.  Kudos to the Generals for an unbelievable 19 of 33 game on threes.  Guilford was outscored by 15 in the first half, but if there's a silver lining, it was only by 14 in the second half.

So where does H-SC's season land on a 1-10 scale of surprises.  To think this team and program that has been down right awful the past two seasons could do this in the first year of a new coach (who I would figure would be in the running for ODAC Coach of the Year) is pretty unbelievable.  I know it will come back down to earth as they close with a tough stretch, but with football having a dreadful season it is awesome to see this!

I know how you feel. When Roanoke lost a couple of weeks ago W and L hit 13 3s and nearly all were contested tightly.  W and L is definitely a team that can beat anyone in the conference if they're hitting their 3s.

R-MC got off to a rough start against E&H due mostly to some outstanding Wasp defense. The Jackets managed to get it together late in the half and lead 32-27 at halftime. The second half started off better for R-MC thanks to Corey Bays, who didn't play in the first half but scored seven of the Jackets' first 11 points after halftime. He finished with 13, second to Ian Robertson's 16 for the game. Miles Mallory and Buzz Anthony had uncharacteristically poor shooting games, again due to Wasp defense that looked well prepared to make it tough on them and David Funderburg. Final score was 79-54.

I would say Coach Kimbrough is the frontrunner for ODAC COTY.
