May well be five ODAC teams among the top 64 (debatable), but regardless, the NCAA Tournament is not the top 64 -- it's 43 conference winners and the next-best 21.
Agree, but as I qualified my post, "It's not the way the AQ and selection system works."

You did say that ...

But when people throw out "top 64" in an argument, it tends to be confused that they are talking about the national tournament - since it is a 64-team field. And many others like to believe, pretend, hope, whatever that NCAA tournaments are always the "best" 64 (or 68 WTF?!) teams in the country ... despite there being NO indications of that possibility with AQs.

As a result, we get arguments that .500 teams who won their AQs shouldn't be in the tournament while also getting the arguments a fifth placed team in a conference should be in despite being no where close to the conversation.

So ... we all tend to remind everyone (Pat didn't quote anyone as if he was replying directly to anyone) the particulars. I know I tend to post with not only the idea of engaging in the current conversation, but also to inform the casual reader or someone not involved, yet, in the conversation to understand the particulars before we slide down a path that isn't relevant. :)
Your (and Pat's) point is duly noted and I didn't mean to muddy the waters for those new to how DIII teams qualify or get an at-large bid for the postseason.   I was not confused about the way it works and was probably only thinking about the more knowledgeable readers of this forum.   Mea culpa.

I just listened to the archived Hoopsville interview with R-MC coach Josh Merkle. Some really interesting thoughts in there not specifically related to Randolph-Macon. Great questions from Dave and interesting insights from Coach Merkle. https://www.d3hoops.com/hoopsville/archives/2019-20/feb23

Thank you. I try my best.

Josh was great as always

I think the guys at the Richmond  paper must have also seen your interview....sounds strikingly familiar in this morning's edition.  https://www.richmond.com/sports/college/plus/as-postseason-arrives-for---r-mc-it-s/article_da51310d-c316-5b26-a051-4d25c6ee9756.html?utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=user-share via @RTDSports  It's in the "Subscriber PLUS" part so you may not be able to read it  but if I was still at R-MC and the professor was Ed Schmidt(who still runs the clock at basketball games btw) I would have gotten sent to honor court....heehee Nice job on the interview Dave. I listened to the tape also..
Also- there was an article on VWU in the Norfolk "Va Pilot" this am....http://digitaledition.pilotonline.com/infinity/article_share.aspx?guid=6a5b8099-5caf-41c5-bcf2-e622cf1eaf60 - After missing nine games, Golston is back for Marlins
Looks like this tournament is gonna be, to steal a phrase from the Guilford radio announcers( who are GREAT btw Hasa) a "Donnybrook"! Any number of teams could win this thing!! Hasa those announcers remind me of the old ACC announcers Billy Packer and Jim Thacker of the old "Pilot Life" ACC broadcasts  back when it was just 7 teams!
RMC1982, their names are Tommy and Miles ... and they pepper the broadcasts with homegrown nicknames and Southern sayings.  I'm sure they would be pleased with your comments.

Yes they had a nickname for EVERY player too! I thought I would ROLL ;D ;D listening to them! Made a bad game (for us) enjoyable! Reminded me of watching old ACC games  with Packer and Thacker as a kid PLUS they have that Carolina accent you can't fake! Don't mean that in a bad way- my wife is from Wilmington!! :P :P :P She was in the kitchen last Saturday when I was at the bar watching the game on my IPAD and she asked me "Who ARE those announcer guys???- they sound like my UNCLE!"....Heehee....If theyre doing the tournament I'm listening to YOUR feed! The only problem is I got charged $6.95 when our feed is FREE! ;) ;) ;) But Honestly....They were WORTH IT!!

^^^ Won't the conference be responsible for the broadcasts from Salem? Announcing crews might come from individual schools, but hopefully the broadcasts will be free.

Conference has traditionally taken care of the broadcasts in Salem ... and not necessarily the individual schools calling the game (how would you decide which school gets to call the game without being unfair to the other broadcasters?).

Highest seed gets the first choice and so on down the list would be the easy way. Benefit of being the #1. And you are likely to go deepest, so the announcers would be most likely to have the best knowledge of at least one team going deep. Or do it the lowest seed since you are likely to get bounced early and, therefore, least likely to have bias in the announcers as the tournament goes deep.

Honestly I don't care and the way it's done now is fine, but it's not that hard to make a rule and stick to it that would be just fine.

rmc1982

I can usually listen to Marty and Andrew Price whenever we play But not exactly sure how it works... I was just making a statement that those Guilford guys are a HOOT! Our guys are GREAT and have been for some time , but everyone would like to listen to their own announcers.... I honestly can't remember how it's done ! I just had never heard those two until last Saturday....Didn't mean to cause any strife!! ;D ;D

That is how it's been done in the past if the ODAC wasn't able to furnish an announcer crew for the quarterfinals. The higher seeded team in each matchup got the right of first refusal.

rmc1982

Good Luck to our women's team today as they start off vs Shenandoah at 3 pm in the ODAC Tournament! We've been playing very well as of late and ODAC POY Kelly Williams is back to her old form after missing most of last season with a terrible ACL injury! Sat behind her and her team mates last week at the HSC game in Crenshaw and she's a BEAST on the boards!Great kid and also the Farm Bureau Scholar Athlete of the year and a Phi Beta Kappa to boot! Just wonder what her stats would be if she played all 4 years! GOOD LUCK today Ladies!! I think we will have to win the tournament to get into the NCAA's....too many losses early to get an at large bid!

I remember neutral crews being used in the past ... including myself when I came down to cover it for Hoopsville. I got asked at the last minute to call two games (I think it was two). :)

R-MC over H-SC 80-61. The Jackets were playing without ODAC Freshman of the Year Miles Mallory who the announcers said was out due to a medical issue. Hope he's okay. Another freshman, guard Josh Talbert, came up big with 20 points to lead the way. Sixteen offensive rebounds that led to 23 second chance points for R-MC seem to be the main difference in the game.

On to tomorrow vs Roanoke who downed Guilford 73-66. Guilford was without Kyler Gregory for the entire second half. Roanoke built a 15 point lead that got completely erased and it was tied at 64, but RC scored the next five points to force GC to foul and held on to win.

First, congratulations to Roanoke ... they shot well and played well.

With regard to Kyler Gregory, he was injured on Guilford's 2nd possession.  He tried to reenter the game, but his knee could not take it.  So, in the end, he had 6 minutes and 0 points ... pretty pivotal to the outcome.  To your point, GC had a chance to take the lead, but settled for a late tie at 64 when the Quakers missed one of two FTs.  On the ensuing possession with the shot clock about to expire, GC somewhat unfortunately fouled on a desperation 3-point attempt.  To RC's credit, they sank all 3 FTs and that was the game.

y_jack_lok

^^^ I only caught the final 15 minutes, so was going off what the announcers said about Kyler Gregory's time on the court.

It's tough to overcome that kind of loss. Happened to R-MC in last year's Sweet 16 when Jon Nowell went down in the first minute against Swarthmore. I'm guessing that whatever ails Miles Mallory was known enough in advance to do some preparation for a game without him.

Anyway, kudos to GC for making a run to nearly pulling it out -- and kudos to Roanoke for hanging in there to win.

y_jack_lok

Dramatic finish. R-MC down by one gets a steal and layup then a stop at the buzzer to beat Roanoke 60-59. I only saw fits and snatches of the game, but what I saw looked like Rosnoke outplayed the Jackets. Definitely a tough loss for the Maroons.

rmc1982

Watched the last 10 minutes from Colorado Springs! Jackets LUCKY to win this one!! Hope we can pull this out tomorrow!!
