I understand about the time, given that a number of their players could be observant Jews and this time slot beats Shabbos and is the only one that would..... well 845 Saturday would also but I guess the NCAA saved that for more western teams.... but It would have been better for us!. Being in the jewelry business we have to do this with buying shows a lot ....  We HAVE to honor that..it's the right thing to do!

The entire team observes the Sabbath - though not all wear yamakas during the game.

I think from the NCAA's perspective, the game really would have needed to be played at about 9:30. This past weekend was an 8:45 tip prior to Daylight Savings Time kicking in. Pushing everything back meant the tip would have been 9:30 at the earliest. I bet they felt that just was too late a game in general.
Just out of curiosity Dave I wonder what the NCAA will do if they win and play next weekend? Arent some games on Saturday during Shabbos?
This looks like this is setting up to be one heck of a ballgame! Great defense vs Great offense in a great venue! May be the game of the weekend!

If Yeshiva is playing on Saturday NEXT weekend, it is first a pretty cool "problem" to have. Second, they will have to find a time Saturday night or maybe Sunday to play the game.

But the first game is an all-star game at 2:15pm. The second game is Semifinal 1 at 5:00 pm and the third game is Semifinal 2 at 7:30pm.

We shall see what they put in as a plan should Yeshiva win this Friday.

Yeshiva sending back 200+ tickets they didn't sell....Still impressive they sold as many as they did!  So much demand on our end I don't think they'll even make it to the public! I understand the waiting list is huge....YJ Club members above a certain level could only get 2 yesterday and many people were left out.....Hopefully most of them will get a ticket now....GO JACKETS!!

After today's events, it's really hard to foresee a justification for that all-star game now. I think it's only a matter of time before the NCAA shuts down everything for the foreseeable future.

The NBA has to react because they had a player mock the virus, touch every microphone and tape recorder near him two days ago, and then test positive for the virus.

And everyone is sick this time of year ... so a coach on the sidelines sick could simply have the flu or cold or something.

I suspect games will be played ... just no crowds.

While I understand the NCAA erring on the side of caution the only ones who will benefit are the VISITING TEAMS, who essentially have a game at a neutral site. The only consolation is that EVERYONE is having to do the same thing and the best team(s) tomorrow and Saturday (on that particular day, at least) will win without anyone being able to say the crowd had something to do with the outcome. Disappointing for our kids and the other home court teams, who have broken their collective tails to get where they are now in order to host, but there's no need worrying about this now.We have to do our business and PLAY BALL and let everything else fall where it falls......GO JACKETS!

All it takes is one player, coach, team affiliate and the whole locker room, both teams, and anyone else who used that locker room, are going to quarantine. That causes forfeits and that ends the legitimacy of the tournament. I'll be surprised if the NCAA gets away with the D1 tournament. D3 might make it because we have already winnowed the field. Though I suspect as soon as the first athlete is confirmed, all NCAA sports at all levels will be discontinued.

I agree and I thought last week when Hopkins started this that this season will go down in history as the season with the asterisk*** beside it because of the unusual circumstances behind and because of this illness. I too will be surprised if the D1 tournament even gets off the ground now....In our Division there's a two week lull between the semis and the final so it could also happen in our division. I'm not being critical of the decision Jknezek but I am disappointed that it happened to us and the others still left, thats all. Like the NBA , all it will take is ONE and its over....Sad for the kids. I personally think that it has already affected the legitimacy of the tournament, although all are in the same boat.... Fans and crowd noise  DO make a difference, and taking them out of the equation DOES affect outcomes, at least in a small way. Any player will tell you that crowd noise makes a difference, especially when its YOUR crowd.

I talked to a lot of players after the JHU pod and all of them said, once the game was going, they didn't notice.  It was strange before and after, but during the game they tune it all out anyway.

Ryan- Have you EVER been to a big game in Crenshaw Gym?? Especially a playoff sellout game?? If you have and you came out saying that you must be DEAF! There's no way anybody would say they didn't notice the crowd not being there after playing in that atmosphere!!

I'm just reporting what I was told.  That's a pretty common story around basketball for every year I've covered it.  The players appreciate the fans, but rarely do they notice during the game.

Also, even those these are home games for some teams, the NCAA philosophy is that they be as neutral as possible, so having them in empty gyms is actually more in keeping with the aims of the NCAA than playing them to rowdy partisan crowds.

I'd rather see people there, for sure, but it's not necessarily ruining the tournament.

To follow up on what Ryan said ... while I do think Hopkins losing was affected by having no fans in the building (to maybe get in the heads of the opponent; to help the home team rally) ... I couldn't tell you more than one thing about any crowds I played in front of from high school (three sports) through college (one sport). I barely remembered anything about the crowds at any facility when I was a player, even when I was on the bench. I can remember details of a lot of games, even small ones like a ball hitting a rock before hitting a goal post and rolling over the goal line, but I couldn't even remember the crowd for many of my games. It is a blur.
