Jackets hang on for a close win over H-SC. Work to do to get better, especially on offense.

It wasn't any prettier in person believe me!! They just looked totally lost at times.... I think it's correctable but it's gonna take time.

I was off on my previous statement. Virginia Wesleyan looks to be undefeated. I did not know there game vs ODU was an exhibition. I know they lost a lot last year and not sure what they have. Have they played a weak schedule to start the year?

It's still early in the season to assess strength of schedules, but Va. Wesleyan's doesn't appear to be strong based on assumptions about who the good teams might be.

EMU at 2-2 going into ODAC schedule. After three really close games, beat Goucher by 12. https://www.emuroyals.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/releases/20221122yr0tw4

Hi, everyone.  I hope everyone is well and had a good Thanksgiving.  Quakers will be formidable this season.  Yes, two close losses to ranked UW-Lax and a buzzer beater tip-in vs NCWC.  Guilford will be in the mix all season.

RMC drops to #8 in the latest poll and 3 other ODAC teams getting votes (Guilford, VA Wesleyan and Roanoke).  Should be a fun and exciting year in the ODAC.

ODAC teams have a respectable 37-24 record against non-conference competition. Nice to see four teams from the conference getting recognition from the top 25 voters.

Tonight Roanoke gets a big win against Bridgewater 78-60. They were up 11 at half and held on for a good first conference win.

In other news around the ODAC:

RMC handles VWU 66-49.  Impressive win for RMC who takes down a previously undefeated team.

EMU loses at Washington and Lee 65-74

Shenandoah loses big at Wilson 53-74

Averett loses at HSC 67-71

Lynchburg loses at Ferrum 74-87

This was a good game. The Marlins' defense was tough. A few breakdowns, especially in the first half, led to some easy buckets and a 12 point halftime lead for the Jackets. VWU cut it to seven in the second half, but R-MC was able to settle down and extend the lead back to double digits. Miles Mallory was huge for R-MC with 24 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks (though it seemed like more). Three point shooting for both teams was dreadful, combining for only five made on 27 attempts.

Jackets looked MUCH BETTER in the win last night!! Miles Mallory was a complete BEAST!! Jackets look like slowly and surely they are working through their problems ! I would think by January that Coach Merkel will have them firing on all cylinders again!! Josh Talbert looks more comfortable out there.... Not quite as good as the end of last year but that's pretty hard to beat at this stage of the game!! I think this tells us that the HSC Tigers may be a much improved team in the ODAC.... I thought we just looked bad against them at home..... maybe they're just much improved!! Gonna be an interesting year!! We have CNU in Crenshaw in early January.... Then we'll see how we stack up!

The three freshman guards (Robinson, Pulley Jr, and Keener) are all playing well. Would love to see more opportunities for Will Coble to get open. His season numbers to date are solid, but largely due to the first three games against non-conference teams -- especially against Hood. The last three games against ODAC teams either his shot hasn't been falling or his opportunities have been limited.

Seatfiller

Roanoke got a big win at Randolph last saturday 78-55. The game was close throughout the 1st half but Roanoke was able to pull away in the second half.  We got a tough game against what seems like a up and down Washington and Lee team on Wednesday.

Seatfiller

Roanoke won at Washington and Lee on Wednesday 79-73.  Although I'm glad we won, we just make dumb mistakes when we have the chance to put the game away early.  RC was up 32-14 in the 1st half, got complacent and only went into the half up 8. RC was up by 10 most of the second half.

In other odac news on Wednesday:

Ferrum beat Randolph 90-76

Hampden Sydney won at Lynchburg 89-72

Virginia Wesleyan wins in a nail bitter against Averett 59-58

Randolph Macon wins big at Eastern Mennonite 75-48

Va. Wesleyan erases an 18 point halftime deficit to down CNU at the buzzer 77-76. Wish I could have watched the second half, though there are comments on the Top 25 Talk board that the VWU streaming camera didn't catch the game winning shot. Guess the camera operator got caught up in the excitement of the game and forgot to pan to the other end of the court after CNU had made a bucket with five seconds remaining to go up 76-75.
