Tonight the programs that have won the last two national championships play each other.

Hoping the RMC team that played Pfeiffer shows up tonight, not the one that played VWU.

Jackets looked okay at times and not so okay at others against CNU tonight. Captains' defense was better.

Announcers weren't sure why a technical foul was called against the Jackets in the last minute of the game. I did notice that an RMC player wearing #24 had entered the game, but there is no #24 on the roster on the RMC website, so perhaps the uniform number change was the reason. I'm guessing that freshman Kayden Tuffour, listed as #30 on the website, is the player who changed uniform numbers. If I'm not mistaken there is an assistant coach assigned to making sure these things are correctly provided to the official scorer at game time. This reason for the technical is speculation on my part. Would be interested to know if it's correct.

UPDATE: Just saw the box score. Tuffour did not play, but freshman Malcolm Hodges, #13 on the online roster did. I did not see a #13 in the game, so perhaps Hodges is now wearing #24 and that is what led to the technical.

In the first week of games ODAC teams are 19-9 against non-conference teams.

HSC defeats Widener 72-63.  HSC led 36-24 at the half.  Widener cut it to 4 twice in the 2nd half, I think.  HSC's biggest lead was 14.

Great win for the Quakers yesterday in Greensboro:

Guilford 83, Emory 80 in OT.

Lots of ties and lead changes, but Guilford prevailed.

Tyler Dearman with 31, including 14/14 FTs.  Team was 24/29 from the line.

That's an outstanding win for the Quakers. Emory had a couple of exhibition game wins against D2 opponents and are pre-season #19. Guilford is just outside the top 25, but could crack that group when the next poll comes out. There will probably be a lot of changes in the Top 25 after this next round of voting.

With a 2-2 record RMC will surely drop out of the top 25. They got a 60-51 win yesterday vs Cal Lutheran, thanks largely to a +13 rebounding margin against a significantly taller team. Still trying to figure out who plays well together. In the final minute, when Cal Lutheran was going to have to foul, I would have liked to seen Keishawn Pulley on the court to get the ball on the inbounds. He seems to be the most reliable free throw shooter the Jackets have.

Another very poor 3-pt night.  But, a solid win versus a very good Cal Lutheran team.   Agreed, still trying to figure out whom should be playing and what combinations.  I'd be paying even more freshmen, just to see their potential.  Margad and Joe getting solid minutes, plus Rieco looked sharp in a few minutes of play.  Sam Brannen started the season, but didn't play last night, hope he's okay.  As I said before, this team will only succeed if the freshmen are contributing.

Yes, the threes aren't going in. Seems that most of those shots have been reasonable to take, though a few have been rushed late in the shot clock. There have a few too many instances of getting too deep in the shot clock.

Freshman Margad Choijilsuren is improving with each game. Hopefully he, Bachman, Brannen, and now Hellams will continue to improve. Still wondering about sophomore Liam Joyce.

Guilford fans are still pretty bitter about last season's indefensible NCAA snub.   At 22-6 and ranked #19, three of our losses were to season long #1 RMC (2 we could have won in the last seconds).  We split with HSC (including a win in the ODAC semifinals) and beat Emory by 14 in Atlanta, yet the Tigers and Eagles (and 4 other UAA teams) got in.  WTH!  I think the Quakers are on a mission this season.

^^^ The NCAA selection criteria are pretty rigid and data driven and heavily reliant on how that leads to regional rankings. The criteria don't factor in differences in the overall strength of the regions. Last season the Quakers were definitely victims of a system that needs some tweaking. Hopefully the Quakers won't have to rely on an at-large bid this season, but if they do, perhaps there will have been some adjustments to the selection criteria to avoid last season's mis-step as it affected Guilford.

I expect the Tigers will move up from #8 to #5 or higher.  The Quakers will likely move up from "#26" to #20-25.

When is the voting for the next Top 25?  Sunday the 26th?

Tight game for the Quakers last night, but they pulled away from the Pfeiffer Falcons in the last 5 minutes to win 64-57.  GC now at 4-0.

Improved FT shooting this season.  Tyler Dearman had the ball a lot at the end and went 13/14 to go with 14/14 vs Emory.

Pfeiffer is curious to me. They have wins over Averett and Lynchburg and losses to RMC and now Guilford, as well as a loss to Salisbury. The loss to RMC was their worst (by 21 points) but it came less than 24 hours after the win over Averett, so maybe they had some fatigue. At this point they are #150 in the Massey ratings, so not a bad ranking. Massey has Guilford #2, H-SC #3, RMC #6, CNU #10, and VWU #11. That is way too high for RMC, given their losses (albeit on the road) to CNU and VWU, and maybe about right for the others, based on only 4-5 games each. Massey also has Roanoke #29, Mary Washington #31, and W&L #39. That makes eight Virginia schools in the top 40. But the season is only about 20% over, so much will change.

ODAC teams are now 42-14 vs non-conference competition. Not all games have been played against D3 opponents. If my calculations are correct, the record against D3 competition is 36-13. Four wins have been against Regent, which is starting to explore D3 affiliation; one win was vs an NCCAA school and one was against a USCAA school. One loss was to D1 Radford.
