An amazing weekend for Virginia Wesleyan.  Ton Ton Balenga has to go down as one of the most clutch players in Division III history with his winning shots vs Lincoln, IWU, and Wittenberg.

Call him Mr. March.

After this weekend, any second thoughts about him not being even Honorable Mention AA, or was Mr. March just not enough Mr. November-February? ;)

Pat Coleman

He will have his time. Plenty of great guards in Division III, Ypsi.

To see the results would be my guess.

Since all the guards on teams 1-4 are seniors, unless Ton Ton Balenga screws up, I suspect his time is SOON!

Ton Ton isn't an All-American.....yet.  He really hasn't put up the consistent numbers to be there although he shows plenty of great signs that he has it.  He will score 22 and then 2, but again he is only a sophomore.

Adair will be back, he is not a semester away from graduating.  That is def a rumor.  Not only will he be back, but he will wind up as the all time leading scorer in VWC history and has a great shot at 2,000 career points.  He has 1,534 (un-officially) for his career.

A question...Is Coach Macedo the youngest coach ever to win a National title in d3?  He is 32.  Anyone know? He has been a head coach now 6 years.  Has any other coach won a National title with less years as a head coach?...just very curious..thank you

Now the mischievous question...

Any coaching rumors about Coach Macedo going to some mid-major as head coach?  How about an ACC top assistant job?  Big East anyone? ??? ::) ;D :D

Congratulations to Marlins on bringing the title back to the South.

The last time the South won the title, Coach Macedo was a toddler! ;D

I don't KNOW the answer to your questions, but I will speculate. ;)

6 years - surely not - I'd bet someone has 'inherited' a loaded team and won in the first couple of years, or built one quick thru transfers and won in the 3rd or 4th year.

Age 32 - now that MAY be a winner!

BTW, CONGRATULATIONS to the fish!!  Ever since this IWU class were freshmen, I dreamed of two (or more) Final Fours, and one (or more) Titles, but, alas, it was not to be.  [I'm not yet ready to concede that in a ten game series, we wouldn't win at least 6 or 7, but, alas, we don't play a ten game series and you won the only one that DID get played!  Good job!  :'(]

Nothing but respect for all the teams VWC managed to defeat, especially  Illinois Wesleyan and Whittenberg. Two amazingly talented and well coached teams with incredible athletes.

Yet more congrats to the Marlins and the ODAC from a GSAC poster (and Maryville fan) glad to see southern ball do good.   Maybe some ODAC school wants to play the Scots now that the conference is a Really Big Deal?

Excellent, very glad to hear it. I really enjoyed watching him play this weekend, and am thrilled at the idea that I could be seeing him more.

I'm sure people will try, because I'm sure there are some people who want to discredit Va Wes's new banner as a fluke for the south, ::) but I wonder how anyone could actually make a case against the National Champs being preseason #1 next year.  ???

diehardfan ... You passed by so quickly during the halftime of the IWU / Amherst game (exiting above the Amherst bench) that I didn't get a chance to call out your name and thank you for the cookies 2-3 years ago.  :( :)

Algernon, shame on you for not yelling for me or chasing me down.  :P I would have loved to meet you, and since I brought cookies to the final four with me, I could have given you a refill.  :D If you end up heading to the Final Four next year, drop me a line. Barring a disaster, I'm sure I'll be there. :)
Wait, dunks are only worth two points?!?!!!? Why does anyone do them? - diehardfan

Yes, two coaches won D3 national titles in their first year as head coach: Bosko Djurickovic of North Park (1984-85) and Joe Campoli of Ohio Northern (1992-93).

That is a very good question.  Not speaking for anyone, but I hear that Macedo is happy (obviously) where he is at.  I don't think he is the type of coach that would want to go back to being an assistant, but if you dangle enough carrots you could see him on another sideline.  I for one hope VWC can lock him into a long contract as I believe they are year to year with their coaches.  The recruiting trail is getting very difficult at the beach.  Even with a national championship, it is hard to convince a kid to pay $30,000 to come to a small, liberal arts college especially when you have very good basketball schools around the corner with a lot more endowment and financial backing in RMC, HSC and CNU (state school).  VWC's alumni and Endowement funds are pretty low and all that said it makes the recruiting process a grind when you are asking a kid to pay 5,6,7 thousand more a year.  Just my opinion, but that could be a reason to move on.
