algernon - No problem.  I remember Guilford's 1973 title so well because I was there and helped TP all the trees from Friendly Avenue to the Quad!  lol  What a great team!  (By the way, Jack Jensen, who has won three national golf titles at Guilford, was the head basketball coach in '73.)  I FULLY understand VWC's unbridled enthusiasm and I think it's great!

This is regarding the comment about VWC recruiting against other private schools with better endowments and a CNU which is a state school.

I forgot where I read it, it was in a newspaper article I read but statistics show that students generally leave an inexpensive state school with more student loan debt than students leaving private schools.  I think private school financial aid departments as a whole work harder in helping prospective students find financial aid and scholarships where as many public schools tell the students to find the information themselves.

My apologies Pat Coleman, comment was meant for patcummings, but had your name on mind from reading the Championship game blog.

Congratulations to the entire Marlin basketball family, players, coaches, fans, everyone.  I've had the pleasure of following your run for the past 2 seasons.  I also have a few thank you's to give out.

3sdown  --  Thank you for the bulletin board material that VWC will not win the ODAC tourney and will be eliminated early in the NCAA tourney........28 straight, good call.

swish3  --  For saying that if VWC din't beat Lincoln and advance to the Final 4, their season was a failure.  Glad to know that the Marlins didn't disappoint you.  Don't remember CNC (notice they were a college then) win a National title with Strothers and Artis or Artis, Berry, and Boykins.  If Chowan hadn't been kicked out of the USA South, CNU wouldn't have made it to the tournament.

To all the IWU fans  --  VW is located on the Va. Beach/Norfolk line and is where you can find the National Cahmpionship trophy.  For those that didn't understand the saying "FEAR THE FISH", a marlin is a really big Fish that lives in the ocean, and also our mascot.  Didn't miss the green on Sat. night.

To all the Witt fans  --  Thanks for the comments in the lobby of the Wyndam Hotel that the winner of Friday's Witt/Amhearst game would be the champ after they beat IWU in the finals.  Thanks for counting the Marlins out.  Don't miss all the red today either.

Last, but not least, Pat Coleman  -- [INACCURATE STATEMENT REMOVED].  Then you replied to another post saying #7 in the country and always considered the favorite, kinda contradicts your post of IWU being the heavy favorite.

Thank you all for letting me stand on my soapbox and vent.  Again, congratulations to PJ, Marques, and Matt..........going out on top and in style with a little bling.

Have no clue who you are, but yes I made that comment!!!  And now, being the man that I am, I must eat those words.  Congratulations to the Marlins.  I didn't expect it, but you got the job done.  One hell of a season and I am proud you are in the ODAC!!  Again, congratulations on the NATIONAL Championship.

2+ seconds on the clock .... The ball's in the air and Adair is prepared for the rebound that was not to be!

Cameras, confetti, cheerleaders, and setup for the trophy presentation ...

Congrats to the VWC Marlins - 2006 NCAA Div. III Men's Basketball National Champions!  All of my friends are already sick of hearing about it! The way in which you represented the school, the conference, the state and all of us old basketball alumni has made me more proud then ever to say I graduated from VWC.

Pat and crew -  Thank you for a wonderful job the entire year.  Div. III basketball is better off b/c of all of your hard work.  Your dedication to this site continues to amaze me.  Thank you.

Go Marlins!

Algernon - if you look behind the Marlins' bench, I'm in the second row standing on the aisle wearing a dark sweater and my wife Carol is next to me wearing white. The fellow going crazy in front of us is President Greer!

Thanks to Ralph Turner for all the material you posted about the stats.  Nice of you.  Thanks also to d3 hoops for having the best site for d3 fans to make comments.  Also congrats to Brandon Adair for not only getting his 1,000 point this year but also his 1500th.  Quite an achievement.  To all the Marlins and their coaches..take a long deserved rest.  You must be exhausted!  Thanks for all the great games and a well deserved National Championship.

But Pat Cummings did the Championship game blog, too. :)

The state schools def. have an edge IF a kids decision is based on money, which happens more often in basketball than most other sports.  Basketball is typically not a "rich" sport like baseball, soccer and lacrosse (meaning the typical athletes financial background).  This being said, at a private school the endowment is very important because the school can give more institutional money.  Schools like RMC and HSC who have tremendous support from alumni and tradition have larger endowments and can offer better financial aid packages.  VWC does well with what it has, but aside from government aid and academic monies, there is a very, very, very dry well.  Young school, not many alumni and to be honest, not a very good alumni backing.

I don't know how Macedo and Co. have done it so far, but the mountain keeps getting steeper as the tuition rises.  Good thing that he can show that WALNUT AND BRONZE off to help ward off any second guessing.

ncbballfan - this might be one of the most ignorant statements i've ever read...chowan NEVER won anything as a d3 school, and was NEVER really close...did they even have a winning SEASON in d3? - you can't assume that because they were an average d2 (playing a very weak d2 schedule) that they would have been a solid d3...there is no way to know what the makeup of that team would have been without athletic dollars...would lathan still be there? who knows?...historically, chowan wasn't that good without athletic dollars, and looking at the chowan schedule, i don't really see anything that tells me that they were clearly better than cnu (or any usasac team except ncwc) WITH athletic dollars

congrats to the fish for their national championship...amazing run...28 straight...wow

Is President Greer wearing a brownish plaid shirt and leaning on the rail (which appears to have a white shirt draped over it)?

I see that your eyes are wide open as you watch the ball head toward the basket.  Everyone in the house was full of hope and/or fear!

For me, just plain anticipation. If you listen to the call, it becomes apparent the ball is going in when it's about halfway there.

Also, you can see our photographer standing on the baseline at the extreme right-hand edge of the photo. He did not miss either.
