Looks like free throws down the stretch and drastically out rebounding the Tigers are what won it for the Quakers.

Nice to see the Gennies take care of business at home in a sloppy EMU game, foul-wise.

Bienamenn is already making a solid case for all-ODAC honors and Femi continues to be efficient offensively.  Good work Gennies.

Games for WEEK FOUR of the ODAC Pick'em:

Wednesday, December 6
Virginia Wesleyan at Bridgewater
Eastern Mennonite at Washington & Lee
Emory & Henry at Roanoke
Guilford at Hampden-Sydney
Randolph-Macon at Lynchburg

I realized about halfway through watching the BC/VWU game tonight that I forgot to make my picks. LOL!

Saturday, December 9
Randolph-Macon at Eastern Mennonite
Lynchburg at Emory & Henry
Roanoke at Guilford
Virginia Wesleyan at Hampden-Sydney

Dom Trawick had 20pts against Va Wesleyan tonight. He is now averaging 20 pts/gm for the season. He can create his own shot and can drive on the taller defenders. He will definitely be in the running for FOY.

Just back from the Hampden-Sydney / Guilford game.  Wow, what a contest; it couldn't have been tougher.  Guilford led most of the first half, but HSC came back near the end of the first half.  Guilford led by 1 at the half.  Then, Guilford led most of the second half, but HSC came back near the end, and came within about 0.5 seconds of forcing overtime.

What a battle!  HSC comes at you with a seemingly endless bench, and their outside shooting is deadly.  Both teams played very active defense, and shooting percentages were low, especially for Guilford.  Guilford won the rebounds, with the whole team active on the boards.   Lots of fouls inside with HSC trying to even up the battle in the paint.  The refs even noticed some of the fouls.

It might not look like much on the stat line, but steals played an important role in the game for Guilford.
Free throws did too, and Kimbrough is clutch.

The players on both teams put out huge effort in a very exciting game.  I hope both teams feel good about the game;  they should.
HSC is a cool place to play.  I was soooo glad to NOT see overtime again this year!

Interesting mix this week with wins by Lynchburg and W&L!

Good to see the ODAC in full bloom.

Hey hasanova, I'd  be glad to give you some props on the karma but I have no idea how.

My partner pointed out that HSC's shooting percentage was even a bit lower than Guilford's,  contrary to my perception.

I know both these teams have plenty of guys who really can shoot.  Heck, HSC has guys who can hit shots when they apparently can't even see the basket.  What a defensive struggle.

I guarantee that when Lincoln plays an ODAC team, they're not going to score 200 points.
(Possible exception is E&H, where anything can happen, and 200 wouldn't guarantee a victory! ;))

Thirty five turnovers in this game for the Maroons, who have been averaging 21 in earlier games.  I expect Roanoke will see full court pressure on the ball handlers until they show they can get that thing up the court safely.  Diggs and Shrader were out with injuries, and Milton didn't see any action due to his injury earlier in the season.

With Guilford up next, things may get worse before they get better.   :(

The HSC-Guilford game was a very good game.  Guilford jumped out to an early lead and HSC had to fight to get back in the game the whole night.  Unfortunately for HSC, this seems to be a trend for the past two to three years.  For some reason, the team starts out slow and then works its way back into a game.  If they could just start off strong and play a complete 40 minutes, they would be hard to beat.

I was very impressed by what I saw defensively from HSCs post players.  Strong is a lot to guard and they held him well below his average (9 points below I believe).  Having said that, I also believe that the officials allowed Strong to get away with some offensive fouls.  HSC defenders had trouble defending him early because the officials called a foul on almost every post entry.

As far as Strong is concerned, I think he is probably one of the best players in the conference.  However, I believe that conditioning may be his Achilles' heel.  If not for a long break in the middle of the second half when Guilford had built its lead up to 7-9 he may not have had enough down the stretch.  I am sure that his conditioning will improve as the season progresses, however.

The real story of this game was rebounding and turnovers.  Guilford was the agressor on the boards and out hustled HSC to most lose balls.  In addition, Guilford had tons of second chance points or easy put backs beacuse of their work on the offensive boards.  While Guilford had more turnovers, HSC actually lost the turnover battle because HSCs turnovers were mental mistakes at crucial points.  For instance, in the second half, HSC had fought back to take a 1 point lead and then they proceeded to turn the ball over on three straight possessions.  I believe two of them lead to easy layups for Guilford.  All of a sudden, they were again down by 5 points and having to fight to get back into the game.

I also need to comment on Turner King.  This was the first game I have seen the Tigers play this year and I was very impressed with Turner.  He has a very nice jump shot and plays under control for the most part.  I think he has the potential to be a very special player for HSC.

One other thing.  I was very impressed by the play of Kimbrough and Snipes against HSC.  Both had very impressive games and made clutch shots while also playing tough defense.

Thanks, sludge, but you can't until you get to 200 posts.  Your karma capabilities will magically appear at that time.  :)  For some reason, a couple of guys are hitting me as often as they can every day.  Who knows.  I'm not doing anything, so it just seems like a juvenile prank.  lol  Thanks for the report.  I listened on the net - great game!  Sounds like everyone gave it their all.  See you Saturday for the RC game.

Mr. Loesel, will I see you in Greensboro on Saturday?  It would be great to meet you!

Brian, thanks also for your report.  Coopersharpe and I had both noticed the 53-39 GC edge on rebounds.  Trust me, Quaker fans are very relieved to win this game.  We knew it would be a battle and that's a credit to HSC's great players, coaching and fans.  Someday, I hope to see a game in Fleet.  Maybe next year, I'll just say what the heck and go - even on a Wednesday night!  I saw 1800+ fans in the boxscore - that's great!  I know we won't have that at GC when RC comes to town this weekend, but I hope the Guilford fans (students, are you listening?) will turn out.  This is a very good Guilford team and they deserve our support!

Great game last nite at HSC. Both teams played hard but at the end of the day, the best team won. Both teams will get better but for HSC to step up they need to protect the b'ball AND they need to learn how to box out. Guilford just absolutely killed them on the boards. I don't know the numbers but the rebounding advantage was huge and many of those were offensive rebounds that created points. I think Guilford is the team to beat this year. HSC has a chance IF the can reduce the  number of turnovers and figure out how to get a rebound. Kasse can't go it alone... he needs help underneath. I hope I can get down to Greensboro for the rematch. Guilford is for real and if they continue to improve the ODAC better watch out !!!
