What is the point of the Massey Ratings...the combination of two conferences????

David Collinge

You're citing the Massey ratings without margin of victory, which is something of an artificial construct created for the benefit of the NCAA.  (I believe that Massey's rating is part of the RPI or whatever you call it formulation that is used in the seeding of the D1 tournament, and the NCAA frowns on the use of margin of victory in that seeding.  That may not be expressed 100% accurately, since I haven't paid the least attention to D1 hoops in several years.)  The "real" Massey ratings take MOV into account.  I think pretty much everyone, including Massey himself, believes that these rankings are the more accurate.

Massey ratings with MOV

Guilford is #10 in this compendium; Virginia Wesleyan is #5.  The ODAC as a conference is #9.

Happy holidays to all of my old friends in here.

Twas the Night before Christmas Poem (sort of)   Make it Snow!

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the court
Not a cager was stirring, no scores to report.
The nets were all hung by the baskets with care,
In hopes that Sports Center soon would be there.

The alumni were nestled all snug in the stands,
While juggling a popcorn and drink in their hands.
And mamma in her doo rag, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our bets for the opening tap.

When out on the floor there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the stands to see what was the matter.
Away to the courtside I flew like a flash,
Tore open my wallet and threw out more cash!

The glow of the scoreboard and freshly waxed floor
Gave the lustre of mid-day to what was in store.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature ballrack and eight players with gear.

With a little old Head Coach, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment the floor must be slick.
More rapid than lasers his curses they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

"Now Slasher! now, Dunker! now, Hotshot and Spitter!
On, Vomit! On, Stupid! On Dumber (note: Dumba$$ is optional) and Quitter!
To the top of the key! to the point throw the ball!
Now pass away! Pass away! Pass away all!"

As dry heaves that wind them with gasping they stoop,
When they box out defenders, they jump to the hoop.
So up to the rafters like All-Stars they flew,
With their feet clad in Jordans, and Adidas a few.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on a speaker
The prancing and pawing of each giant sneaker.
As I adjusted my Ray-Bans, and was turning around,
Off the bench came a freshman with plans to astound.

He was dressed all in Fubu and he drove a Dakota,
And his jersey was splattered with pizza and soda.
A bundle of iPods he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a junkie in search of some smack!

His eyes-they were bloodshot! his gym shorts were droopy!
His cheeks were unshaven, his nose wet like Snoopy!
His droll little mouth was drawn up in a smile,
And the socks on his feet - not washed in a while!

The big wad of Mentos he chomped in his teeth,
Masked odor from sweating he wore like a wreath.
He had a broad butt and a Barkley-esque belly,
If not for b-ball, he'd be watching a telly!

He was chubby and plump, a right foul-smelling fellow,
And I laughed when I saw him, he fought like Carmelo!
All "tatted" with cobras and a ring in his ear,
His iTune's No Mercy - his jersey's No Fear!

He jabbered his trash talk, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the baskets, then elbowed a jerk.
And using his finger he then picked his nose,
And stripping the ball, he dunked with no clothes!

He sprang to the foul line, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all high-fived - his opponents they bristle.
But I heard him exclaim, when his dunk scored a seven,
"Happy Christmas to all and film at eleven!"

Merry Christmas everyone.  Peace.

I thought that looking at the 2 conferences together was interesting, given that ODAC teams have been playing so many games against USA South opponents.

Thanks, David Collinge, for your note and insights into the Massey Ratings.  Souns like the ODAC rankings with inclusion of MOV would be more valid than what I posted above.

I'm in awe and definitely not worthy.

Thanks and happy holidays to everyone, whatever your faith or lack of faith.
I wish you joy and appreciation of life.  What a gift!

I know I have not been on here for a while but I am back. I have seen guilford play and they are a legit team. All of you have to realize that that care starting five have been playing together for threes years now. Mr. Strong is finally realizing what he has to do for his team to win. Now I know this next four or five games will tell if this team is for real, esp. with the trip to the beach but even if they lose one of those games. The quakers will be there at the end. Go fellas from a former player who always supports his team.

I've moved the most recent ODAC pick 'em messages off into a new conversation. That's like four times today I've seen there was a new post on this page, clicked on it to see what it was about, and been disappointed.

So no more. People who want to read pick 'em can go to that board and people who don't care can ignore the entire board.

Well, the hell with democratic choice in regards to the ODAC Posters.  Sounds like a dictatorship to me!

Those of you interested in the philosophy and finances of D3 athletics will be interested in a series of articles in the Maryville (TN) DailyTimes.  The focus is Maryville and the GSAC they refer quite a bit to other schools in other leagues, including ODAC, SCAC, USASouth, WIAC, and others. Here are links to the first two:

I am aware you guys discussed this, but yes, this is my decision. There's a reason pretty much every other conference board settled towards this breakdown naturally.

I like the "pick 'em" site. Thanks for watching out for us, Pat. I suspect that the conversation on the posting up site will become more meaningful once again as the season resumes after all the tournaments here and there.

steelyglen

well...given those two choices Pat, for the time being, I'll take the latter...too bad.  At the request of a fellow guru, I will be posting the games for the pick'em for a while, but will drop out as a player! Not that Pat or anyone else cares but the board just isn't as "guru friendly" as it once was and quite frankly life is too short to worry about unimportant things! Have a great '07 gurus!

Pat .... Instead of clicking on the ODAC site 4 times a day, why don't you just click on the ODAC site every day or two, since you already know that there are a lot of pickems that aren't likely to interest you?  If you just check it every day or two, you won't be as bored with the site .... and those of us who are most interested in the ODAC site can continue to have it as we want it, rather than having to go with a change in the site simply because it is most appealing to you?
