Quote from: FISHTANKFAN on January 28, 2007, 11:32:32 AMI read on the VWC website that Tyler Fantin did not play yesterday for personal reasons.  I think that may have been a  factor for the Marlins losing, but E&H did a great job and deserve the win.  Hitting 20 of 40 3's is impressive but I wonder what might have been the outcome if all five starters had been playing.  Congrats to E&H for a great game.  Let's hope the Marlins can rebound today and have everyone back.  It's going to be a battleground I think...Good luck to the Marlins and Guilford.
FISHTANKFAN - Thanks for the added information.  I'll be at the game today and I am also expecting a battle.  Do you know if Tyler was out for just the E&H game or will he also be out of the line-up today?

Wish I knew if Tyler were playing but sorry I don't ..I think you will enjoy the game...Wish I could be there but I will look forward to hearing your thoughts  on the game later today....Have a great time..I think it will be a  War...

Thanks.  I'll give a report after the game and I'll let you know if Fantin was available for play.  I know the Quakers really want this game and I know the Marlins are smarting after yesterday, so it'll be very interesting to see how this game unfolds.

I now know that the Jacket's turnaround has begun! Great come from behind win today at Emory & Henry.

"Chippy" game in Greensboro today.  It was obvious from the opening tap that both teams wanted it badly.  Every ball was contested and the defenses were tight.  Three pointers made the difference as VWC hit 10 and Guilford only 1.  Guilford outshot VWC (28/52 to 24/60) and outrebounded the Marlins 35-34, but those extra 3's accounted for 9 more points.  Guilford drew within 1 at least three times in the last ten minutes, but missed FT's twice that could have tied it and a contested lay-up that could have put the Quakers ahead.  At least once was the front end of a 1 and 1 (GC was 12/17 and VWC 14/19 from the line).  Guilford was forced to foul in the closing minute and the Marlins, to their credit, made 6/8.  The Marlins could not stop Strong (30 points and 14 rebounds in 25 minutes), but others on the team had an off day (such as Snipes, 3/15).  Adair got 13 and had one monstrous dunk.  Ton Ton was the difference today, but someone is going to take him out one day if he keeps posing for the opposing crowd every time he makes a basket.  Fine players don't need to do that.  I'm surprised he didn't get a "T."

If they play again (and I hope they do), I expect another tight game.  Guilford is absolutely capable of winning over the Marlins and actually could have today with better FT shooting even with all those VWC threes.  I'm not sure what this weekend's games will do with the rankings, but I think we clearly saw two Top 25 teams in a heated battle today.  At this moment, I think the Marlins have some slightly better athletes and that was a key factor, but Guilford is right there.

FYI - Fantin played a lot today, but did not score and had four fouls.

There is no excuse for that and Ton Ton is a show boat at times.  He is a good kid, though his emotions get the best of him on the floor sometimes.

Yeah, I'm sure he is and he's certainly got great talent, but he was deliberately playing to the student section today.  It was a fairly large crowd and a contentious game, so he needs to be careful.  He was creating some waves.

I'm sure Macedo will handle that situation.  He doesn't typically approve of any unsportsmanlike nonsense- just hardnosed basketball and confidence.  There is a blurry line between playing with the confidence of a national champion and appearing unsportsmanlike.  If TonTon did take it to far I'm positive the coaching staff will handle it.  I can't say I'm surprised however; this was a big game after a big loss and the Marlins were challenged by there coaches beforehand.  It's bound to be emotional out there.

Congrats to the Marlins and good luck to the Quakers.  From what I've heard, Hassel showed up big again.  I'm enjoying watching his development.  It will be interesting to see if there's another game in the ODAC tournament between these 2 - if so, Macedo has to find a way to stop Strong.  It sounds like he had a great game (congrats).  I can't imagine the energy of an ODAC final between the 2. Hmm.. ;)

Hassell got a lot of PT since Tyler had sort of an off-game.....

I don't think TonTon crossed the line.... he just gave those rowdy Guilford students more to taunt him about..... he feeds off of that type of atmosphere

I agree with you up to a point, GP87, and I certainly don't want to make a real big deal about this.  There is a definitely a blurry line and it was truly a big game with an enthusiastic crowd and Ton Ton played a great game.  It was just obvious he was making a point to turn to the home crowd/students and putting his hands in the air, especially after a three.  I'm old school - so I say, "congratulations for hitting the shot and we all saw you, so now get back on defense and help your teammates."  I personally just don't like that sort of posturing.

Hassell did indeed show up big today.  I think he got twelve and he averages about two.  I'm pretty sure Fantin was scoreless today and I know he got four fouls.  Speaking of Strong, he got two early fouls and sat out a significant portion of the 1st half, so he could have realistically put up 35-36 with more minutes (Ben got 30 pts/14 rebs in 25 minutes).  One of nine 3-point shooting and some missed FT's on the front end of 1 and 1's cost GC.  This game could have easily gone either way.

VWC is a great team and they look to be in the driver's seat for the ODAC regular season championship, but I think the ODAC tournament is up for grabs.  Wouldn't it be interesting if VWC finished 1st, GC finished 2nd and E&H 4th?  Assuming all teams beat the lower seeds, that's VWC's potential gauntlet in the semis and finals.  Salem should be very interesting next month.

Good luck to everyone "down the stretch."  If other games are as intense and entertaining as today, we're in for a treat.
