Justafan02 - by my calculations, Brandon Adair needs 101 points to reach 2000. When do you see this happening? With 6 games remaining(not including any NCAA games) he would need to average 16 ppg against his current average of 17+.

jww, I know this question wasn't directed at me, but barring some anomalies (up or down), it looks like it may happen in Salem.  Since the Marlins only have three regular season games remaining, you must be assuming VWC will play three in the ODAC tournament.  Logically, you're probably right, but let's see how it goes.  :)

JWW,

Let's get specific.  I think it will happen in  the championship game of the ODAC tournament on the back door aleoop (sp) play the Marlins run.

OK, sports fans, you heard it here first...Justafan02 has called it :D

Alley Oop.

Time for a little history:

  • "Allez-oop" is a phrase called out by French acrobats to indicate that they are ready to perform.
The phrase was Americanized into Alley Oop, which in 1933 became the name of an extremely popular comic strip.
  • In 1957, the San Francisco 49ers under coach Red Hickey developed a pass play they called the Alley-Oop, which took advantage of quarterback Y.A. Tittle's strong arm and receiver R.C. Owens' extraordinary leaping ability.  Tittle would float a pass high in the air, and Owens, formerly an amateur basketball player, would leap high in the air to grab it.  Today's Hail Mary pass is very similar, although the Hail Mary is a desparation run-under-it kind of play whereas the Alley-Oop was a designed play with a route.
  • In 1960, the Hollywood Argyles recorded their one and only hit, Alley Oop, which reached #1 on the pop charts and firmly cemented the phrase in the popular consciousness.
  • The football pass play was borrowed by basketball players in the 1970s, who now use the term to describe a high arcing pass that is caught by a leaping player, who then slam-dunks the ball.
Thus endeth the lesson.  ;D

Not much to cheer about in TigerLand. Once again the Tigers let a game get away that should have been won. With another tough week ahead of them the Tigers are quickly heading towards 5th, 6th or 7th place in the ODAC regular season with little or no hope of making any noise past the first round of the tourney. For the 4th year in a row, unless a miracle occurs in Salem, the Tigers will not be in the NCAA's. I don't know the answer, but when was the last time the Tigers went four years without an NCAA invitation? Hopefully things will improve next year !!!!

I remember the caveman comic strip, the song, Y. A. Tittle, when dunking was against the rules and portions of the 70's.  It's official:  I'm old.  :)

I believe it was called the "Million Dollar Backfield."  What would you have to call it with today's salaries?  lol

tigerfanalso .... At least you are consistent in your negativism about the Tigers.  While the Tigers lost the game in the last few minutes, they have also won many games in the last few minutes.  They're not going to win every game.

They lost to the Wasps, for God's sake.  The Wasps also beat the national champions this year.

You note that there are a number of good teams in the ODAC when you speak of the Tigers' tough week ahead.  With games this week against Guilford, Washington & Lee, and Roanoke, they could go anywhere from 3-0 to 0-3.  I think they'll win at least 2 of the 3 games.

Why do you think that they're headed toward 5th, 6th, or 7th place?  If they win 2 out of 3 this week and then beat Lynchburg next Wednesday, they'll go into the Macon game with a 10-7 record.  Having lost by only 1 point in Ashland, there's good reason to believe that they can get the W on their home court.  With a 11-7 record, they'll be seeded 3rd or 4th.  They were an overtime loss away from the championship game last year and there's no reason to think they couldn't win a couple of games to get to the championship game this year.

They may get to the NCAAs this year.  Virginia Wesleyan is beatable, as 3 teams have already proven.  The games haven't yet been played.

If they don't win the ODAC tournament this year, it will only be 3 years without a tournament bid, as the Tigers played an NCAA game not that long ago -- at home in 2004, beating Elizabethtown, and then they lost in the last second to Franklin & Marshall in Lancaster.

The last time before 2005 & 2006 that the Tigers went 2 years in a row without an NCAA bid was 1990 and 1991.  Between 1989 and 2004, the Tigers were in the NCAAs 12 out of 16 years.

The last time the Tigers went 3 years without an NCAA bid was 1986, 1987, & 1988 (the latter 2 years were  Coach Shaver's first 2 at HSC).  In fact, the Tigers didn't go to the NCAAs even once from 1977 through 1988, the first 12 years of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Are you looking for the "Alphabet Backfield" of Y. A. Tittle, R. C. Owens, C. R. Johnson and J. D. Smith?

jdubyadubya

Correct! YA Tittle, RC Owens, JD Smith, CR Roberts. You knew that, right?

Algernon:

Thank you for providing the correct info regarding the Tigers last appearance in the playoffs. The rest of your post and mine are simply difference of opinion. Both of us want the Tigers to play well and pull for them to do so, however, you are certainly more positive about where they might finish the season than I am. I hope your opinion is the correct one !!!
