... with little or no hope of making any noise past the first round of the tourney.

Tigerfan, I've enjoyed your many posts, but so sorry, have to disagree with this one.  If you make a tourney, there is always hope in the tourney.

You are absolutely correct. I should not have used the "hope" word. By definition if you are in the tourney who have hope. I was referring to the probability and the Tigers just are not the same team without Kasse and because of that I don't see them making a run at the tourney title. Again, my opinion and I hope I'm wrong. Certainly stranger things have happened in the game of basketball . Cheers to all.

I can see how it would be hard for a Tiger fan.  You had that incredible string of W-L records there for many years.

Speaking of Kasse....the topic of a trend this year for coaches to leave starters in games late even when the game has been decided came up on the H-SC/VWC broadcast a week or so back. My understanding is that Kasse got hurt late in an exibition game when the game had been decided. WHY?!! Is margin of victory that important? This makes no sense to me.  :o

Algernon:

Thank you for providing the correct info regarding the Tigers last appearance in the playoffs. The rest of your post and mine are simply difference of opinion. Both of us want the Tigers to play well and pull for them to do so, however, you are certainly more positive about where they might finish the season than I am. I hope your opinion is the correct one !!!

I hope that they do well.  They've had a good season, with a 12-8 record ... it's just not what we've been used to in Tigerland.  Depending on how they do in the next 5 games, they could finish the regular season with a record anywhere from 17-8 to 12-13 ... a huge difference.

Before Kaase's injury, they were 5-3.  Since his injury, they've been 7-5.  I think that they'd undoubtedly be a better team with Kaase playing, but their record since his injury isn't that different .... as they won 62% of their games before the injury and have won 58% of their games since the injury.

When the Quakers last played the Tigers, it was a defensive battle.  Nobody lit up the place.  Burge and Kimbrough were the efficient scorers for Guilford.  Other folks chipped in on offense, and everybody played good D.  In a recurring theme, Guilford sort of won the game on the boards.   Guilford has a player called "Team" that got alot of rebounds.  I guess a team rebound is one where the table doesn't know what the heck happened, but Guilford came away with the ball.

H-SC had well balanced scoring, and came within a 3 (a made 3!) of tying the game, an eyeblink after the buzzer.  Whew.  I was there and it was very exciting.

I figure it'll be a heck of a game Wednesday night at that charming field house in Greensboro.

Sludge, I'll be in Ragan-Brown tomorrow night for the Quakers & Tigers.  I'm sure I'll see you there.  I hope GC is focused - HSC has given us fits over the years!

If anyone is considered attending the game, all gate receipts will go to the Jimmy V Foundation.  Almost everyone's family has been touched by cancer - mine has -  so it's a worthy cause and should be a great game!

hasa....Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it tomorrow night in person but will be listening online. I'm with you on the cause. I just lost my best friend of almost 30 years back in December to this disease. He was 44. We have come a long way in fighting cancer but still have a long way to go. GO TIGERS!!  8)

Thanks, allsky7.  You just helped me think about my best friend of 33 years who was also my Guilford classmate and best man, Dr. Randy Wayne Oakes - a truly brilliant guy.  Randy died of pancreatic cancer in 2003 and I still miss him.  If he were alive today, we'd be watching tonight's game together and making wise cracks about everything under the sun.  May your friend and mine both rest in peace.   Go Quakers!

Allsky and Hasanova--I am with you on the cancer opinions.  Not enough is being done about it, and I hope Guilford gets a great turnout.  I have an uncle suffering with it as we speak, and know of several untimely deaths due to this gruesome disease.  The untimely ones always send a chill down my spine.

Good luck to both teams in this game with incredible significance.

Algernon:

We will just have to agree to disagree. I would wager that most folks involved in the program are somewhat disappointed in the season so far partcularly with all of the preseason hype, including the preseason ranking.
The team has not performed to the level anticipated before the season began, so to say the they have had a "good" season  year to date, I just simply to not agree with that statement. I am proud of their effort and I am proud how the team represents the school (they are fine young men), but to date the performance has not met with preseason expectations. Now as you pointed out (and I agree with you) it is not too late to turn the season around and they certainly have that opportunity starting in Greensboro tomorrow night and throughout the remainder of the regular season and conference tourney. I'll be there pulling for them as hard as anyone hoping they have many successes during the final stages of the season.

Three wins in the ODAC tourney and Tiger fans will forget all about the regular season. Don't see it happening but will be pulling for the Tigers to shock the world!! Ok....ok....shock the ODAC.  ;D

Preseason rankings don't mean that much, really.  So much can happen to make a season better or worse, like the illness of a top performer.

A bunch of close games have been lost since Kaase's injury and my bet is that his presence might have made the difference, given that he was averaging about 16 points a game when he ACL tore:

To Shenandoah by 1 point.
To Randolph-Macon by 1 point.
To Bridgewater by 3 points.
To Emory & Henry by 8 ... in the last couple of minutes.

The Tigers have won 60% of their games, all together -- I think that's a good (though not a great) season.  With Kaase playing, maybe they'd be 16-4 instead of 12-8.

As Allsky7 has said, a great end to the season, with 3 wins in the ODAC tournament, and the Tigers will forget about the close ones they've lost.

Algernon:

Again, we must agree to disagree.

You are correct in stating that preseason rankings don't mean much BUT they do set the standard for expectations for the coming season and are reflective a teams potential for success during that season. Games have been dropped to teams that are not very good, two of which you mentioned in your most recent post. That should not happen and than the two blowouts at the hands of VWC; I believe by 18 points at home and 26 points on the road. Getting beat by good(great) teams can be expected but not to competitive at all is not a sign of a team enjoying a "good" season, at least in my opinion.

The only thing that really matters is for Tiger Fans to continue to support the team and to provide the resources needed in order to continue in the quest to field a nationally competitive program. I still believe that is the ulitmate goal and I still believe that can happen.

The fact that we disagree on this particular season really is not relevent, the fact that can disagree in a constructive way is. You see the events as they unfold in a different light than I do, and I respect that.

At this point I'm just hoping we can beat RMC at seasons end and close the chapter of losing 7 straight games to our arch rival; and than use that as a building block for the ODAC tourney. The kids really need to get that monkey off their backs and what a great way for Edwards to end his career.
