Congrats VWC, HSC & GUILFORD!

Hasa,
You can breathe now!  ;D
Thanks, Llamaguy, I am!  d3hoops.com kept talking about Guilford being one of the last teams bumped by Coast Guard and Williams, et al, but I just didn't understand that.  Certainly, they know a LOT more about the selection process than I do, but how could a team that was 21-4 and finished the season ranked 17th NOT get one of 18 spots?  Confusing, at least to me.  lol  Anyway, the Quakers are in, so good luck to all the ODAC representatives in the NCAA tournament!

The teams ranked #7 (21-6), #10 (22-5), #14 (21-6), #18 (19-8), #21 (19-5), #23 (18-7), and #24 (19-7) did not get in.  Congratulations, but count your blessings.  :)

I am, David, but the system seems flawed and probably has too many automatic qualifiers.   I will also say how could they not be selected?  To me, it should be the Top 59 teams, but I know that is not the current selection criteria, so it's a moot point.

The thing that confuses me the most when listening to Hoopsville tonight, is HOW in the world do the women get 63 teams into the tournament and the men only get 59 with five special teams getting a bye, why not just extend the field to 64 so teams like UW-Oshkosh, Elmherst (sorry not sure of spelling) and UW-Lacrosse can get in? It just doesn't make sense that there are 5 teams with a bye. I can never say that I will understand the NCAA and how they operate (look at football, DI no playoff, but every other division has a playoff). I can understand the debate for all teams, but I just want to say how proud I am that the ODAC got three teams in (that is impressive in and of itself), but I guess having the Defending National Champ (and a team that has reached the final four twice) doesn't hurt the Conference for at large bids.

I can only hope that the brackets are favorable for travel (VWC should host, Gulford and HSC most likely will be travelling). I only hope the ODAC makes it three for three for the sweet sixteen, elite eight, and maybe even Final Four because all three teams have a legit shot at winning the tournie, especially the Defending National Champs. GO ODAC and Go TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!

There are more women's basketball teams. There are more women's-only schools than men's-only, I'm sure you know.

Why not 64? In Division III it is a set ratio -- one playoff spot for every 6.5 schools that offer the sport. Eventually we'll get to 64 teams, but not until there are 416 eligible teams playing men's basketball.

And after that we won't get any higher. So we should be thankful we don't have 64. It'll just make it harder to get into the tournament if D-III grows and the field doesn't.

As Pat said, all playoff slots for basketball, softball, football, soccer are allocated and funded from the NCAA budget at 1 playoff slot per 6.5 members, capping at 32 for football and at 64 when the membership reaches that.

Well, thanks for answering my question. I greatly appreciate it. I can only hope for 416 sooner rather than later. I hate the why didn't my team get in debate, but I know no matter how many teams are in the tourney, there will always be someone saying we should have gotten in. I am just glad that I am not the one making selections because it has to be a tough job. There are most definitely teams with legit complaints about not making it, but there is one way around that one, just win basketball games and you can get in. I know its easy for me to say since I didn't play, but it most definitely is a sure fire way to get in the tournament.

tigerphil

Pat, maybe you could add that information to the frequently asked questions page, because I didn't see that information there.

Pat Coleman

Good idea. It'll be a while before I have time to get to it but I'll try to remember.

Pat/David C.,

I note on front page a reference to the top two teams in the conference only got two teams into the tourney.

Out of curiosity, would y'all provide your personal opinions on power conference rankings?  Not trying to get into an ODAC is the best discussion at all...honestly looking to get someone's view on the strength of conference's nationwide...

Ok tigerphil...let me go ahead and ensure the Tigers make it to the final four. There is no way on earth the Tigers are good enough to make it to the final four. There you go, it's a done deal now.  ;D
FYI...that was my thought process as I sat in the Salem CC Sat. watching H-SC play VWC. We all know what happened this weekend.
GO TIGERS, GC, & VWC!!!  And for Pete's sake, don't anyone wake up Mike Edwards. 8)

The tournament selection committee is a joke.  We should start calling it the BCS.  How does the ODAC get 3 bids and the MAC Freedom get two when the WIAC and the CCIW get only one?  UW-Oshkosh is ranked 7th, Elmhurst is 14th, and UW-Lacrosse is 18th.  And Messiah gets in with a pansy schedule?

How do ho-hum teams like Brandeis, Messiah, and Hood (and even Guilford) get in when some of these aforementioned great teams don't?
