I'll say this, too, since it doesn't appear this is going to die.

This is what I do--the name says it all. I read a lot of boards but rarely post unless I have an observation that needs to be made.

I think the conversation would end if the Virginia Wesleyan supporters would simply admit that this was a mistake, it was unfortunate, and move on. Unfortunately, there's far more excuse-making from those who have drunk the Marlin kool-aid (and by the way that does not sound tasty) and it merely prolongs the discussion.

We all know kids are kids. We all know losing is hard. Yet, somehow, other years the kids who lose manage to stand up and shake hands. This is the crux of the discussion.

It was a mistake.
It was unfortunate.
Admit it.
Move on.

Thanks from all of us who are forced to read the drivel from Norfolk-Virginia Beach.

I am pretty sure I said it was a mistake, admitted it and tried to "move on".  However, many on this board keep taking the knife and digging it deeper and deeper and deeper.   I'll keep on backing the Marlins as long as you keep turning the knife....

You are right.
It was a mistake.
I admit it.
Now, GET OVER IT!

I think this board had gotten over it. Last post on this subject was three days ago. Why are you restoking this??

I'm beginning to understand why TOD made those posts to begin with.

Why?  Well, I don't check the board EVERY day during the offseason.  If someone is going to take a shot at my posts...I have a right to say something correct?  Sorry to react defensively but I do feel your post was a sarcasatic jab on top of my sarcastic hook...

Pat Coleman

I would say you don't HAVE to respond to everything, no. If a conversation dies, for goodness sakes, let it die.

Let's all shake hands and get ready for next year, shall we?

There once was a handshake that wasn't?
The discussion has waned - or it hasn't?
In her eyes a winner?
In his eyes a sinner?
In all eyes blasé and unpleasant!

My friends, I sincerely believe the majority of our board's posters have earnestly tried to move on to other topics, but this fire hasn't died.  It nearly does, but then it flares up again.  :)  It will stop flickering when it isn't stoked or given a burst of bellows air.  Ignore it.   Congratulate Amherst and VWC on great seasons!  Shake hands with one another & start new topics!

I've got a question...
Since it costs a grip to go to most Division 3 schools, and particularly the ones in the ODAC, are there many cases of impact players transferring to other schools because they can't afford tuition at their respective schools?

Well, there are a few cases I could cite.  Kerry Atkinson from Raleigh, for example, was Guilford's ODAC men's basketball FOY a few years ago and then the next season he was playing at state-supported North Carolina Central University in Durham.  Whether it was money (they gave him a scholarship) or family (20 miles to NCCU) or higher competition  (NCCU is DII) or a desire to play for a HBCU, I don't know.  It certainly gave me the impression the Eagles didn't recruit him very highly in HS until he proved he was an "impact" player.  No hard feelings, really, but I always felt it was borderline poor form.

Good luck to all ODAC schools on the recruiting trail.   Any info about recruits is always appreciated.

See you all next season.

Pat Coleman

I've heard from more than one coach that you don't really reap the benefits of a basketball national title until the following season. (The reason being, as I understand it, by the time you win the title, most kids are already decided and you only have an opportunity to sway kids who are on the fence about it.)

If that's true, should be a great class for VWC.

While HSC did not win a National Championship, I would agree with Pat's assessment of reaping benefits.  The Tigers recruting class for the 2000-01 season (2nd season after appearing in the championship game) included Brandon Randall, Jeff Monroe, and Jason Holman.  The next year they added Mike Thompson as a transfer.  Not a bad class if I had to say so myself.  They did get to the Final Four.

GOOD TOPIC suggestion! 8)  I usually never know who's where until the rosters are posted online before the season starts.

Bucks, or lack thereof, are always going to be an issue at DIII schools.  I can't tell you the amount of athletes that were recruited to R-M (and others)who went to larger state-supported schools because of funding issues.  And what a shame, too.  These athletes really could've contributed at the DIII level, but they instead go on to become stand-out intramural athletes at larger schools.

We also get a lot of students for whom a DIII school was a back-up plan, and some of these students transfer out to the universities they couldn't get into out of high school.  When I was at R-M, there were a lot of UVA and W&M rejects who were extremely disgruntled about it, and they enjoyed sharing this fact! ;D

Kinda sad, but the reality of it all.  It's probably going to get worse, before it gets better (if it ever does). :-\

Tigerfan

Brian, I am disappointed in you.  You should have your Tiger history down cold.  Mike Thompson was a freshman with Brandon, Jeff, and Jason.  David Willson joined them from SMU the next year.

Brian Hamilton

Thanks for the correction Tigerfan.  I knew there were 5 that graduated that year but could not think of the 5th.  I appreciate the help.  I can't believe I forget that because I watched all 5 of them play so many games.
