I absolutely cannot understand!  I just turned on CNN and they said 22 dead and 28 injured.  Why?!!

And 22 is considered a ballpark figure!

I've been watching this development with absolute horror since mid-morning.  Supposedly the gunman is dead.  Shootings took place at a dorm, and then later, in a classroom.

This is just one of those days when you think civilization is falling down right in front of you.

No one can explain why this event at Va.Tech has happened, at least not in terms that make any sense. We have issues in this country that need to be dealt with and dealt with yesterday and until that happens these problems/issues will continue to play out in our daily lives.

For now, all we can do is pray for the victims and their families and hope that one day the American culture will once again begin to value human life.

I will not get political on this board but human life can only be valued in a God fearing society and that is not exactly where we are as a country at this particular point !!!!

I'm old enough to remember the tragedy at the University of Texas.  The gunman went to the observation deck in a campus bell tower.  No matter the cause, it is a terrible day in Blacksburg that will have repercussions in so many places and families.

Supposedly 30 dead now.  Hospitals as far away as Roanoke treating the wounded.

Algernon - wouldn't it go without saying that drug laws are enforced on the HSC campus?

JWW - I think that some college students are under the impression that the drug and alcohol laws won't be as firmly applied on a college campus .... that their campus should be something of a haven from the rules of the outside world.

Obviously a horrible story out of Virginia Tech today.  It's stunning for all of us ... and our thoughts and prayers go out to all of those who are in any way connected to the tragedy.

I am very happy to report that two members of my extended family, both Engineering students at Virginia Tech, were not injured in yesterday's awful events.  As a native Virginian, I am greatly affected by this senseless tragedy, but I also know this surreal case has sent emotional ripples well beyond the borders of the commonwealth.  My thoughts are with everyone whose lives have been directly impacted.  Indirectly, however, I think it is safe to say none of us will be the same.  Just like 9/11, it is a defining event in our nation's history.  I predict it will be a source of great debate over the following months and years, including our next presidential election.  As a civilized nation struggling with the seeming erosion of our moral compass, may we all find the strength and conviction to make good choices.

Today, we are all Hokies.  Peace

Of all the messages I've posted, I never would've guessed the previous one would get a smite.  Oh well.  My continued best wishes to everyone at Virginia Tech.

Hasanova ... I was recently smited by someone for something also.  I don't know why, but that's the way it goes.

I'm giving good karma to everyone who takes the time to contribute to this discussion board in a meaningful and reasonable way.  And that includes Scottie, since I see that he has recently come out of the shadows after months of lurking without posting!

algernon and jww -  Thanks.  I feel the same way.

Trying to move forward on ODAC men's basketball-related topics, I'm having a really hard time finding any 2007-08 information on:

possible new players for the fall
whether all ODAC head basketball coaches are returning
if there are any interesting trips or new match-ups out-of-conference

If anyone knows anything, I'd be interested to hear.  Thanks.

Just waited to mention that HSC got some good publicity today.  4 student athletes from Hampden-Sydney College visited Randolph-Henry High School to help in promoting a drug and alcohol free lifestyle.  Two hoopsters, Mike Edwards and Drew Prehmus, were accompanied by Larry Greene, pitcher for the Tiger baseball team and an offensive linemen for the Tiger football team whose name I forgot.  Larry gave a very nice speech to the student body.  I wanted to personally thank them if they read this board.  I appreciate their effort to help in promoting this worthy cause.

On a side note, I hope that everyone will keep VA Tech in their thoughts and prayers.  I have several former students at Tech who were not injured but were in the area of the shooting.  I know that they have been greatly affected by this horrible incident.  Friday has been declared "Orange and Maroon Effect" Day.  So if you have some orange or maroon and can wear it to work, please do so to support the VA Tech community.

Hassanova,

Unfortunately we rarely have much news about potential recruits and the like in Division III because we are not allowed to sign players.  As a result, their is usually little information available and what is available is subject to change because the student is not contractually obligated to attend a division III school that they have verbally agreed to.
