On a side note, I hope that everyone will keep VA Tech in their thoughts and prayers.  I have several former students at Tech who were not injured but were in the area of the shooting.  I know that they have been greatly affected by this horrible incident.  Friday has been declared "Orange and Maroon Effect" Day.  So if you have some orange or maroon and can wear it to work, please do so to support the VA Tech community.

Brian, thanks for your post.  Good to see the silver lining manifesting in spite of all the terrible things that have happened over the past two weeks.  I'm very impressed with those H-S athletes.  As long as we have people of that kind of caliber, we will only get but so close to the brink. . .  :)

Picked up first (ever) VT hat yesterday, and am off to purchase a maroon and orange tie for court on Friday.  As a lifelong Wahoo fan, it looks kind of funny in the mirror, but I'm now a stalwart supporter of the Hokie nation.

I suspect the Hokie Nation has added quite a few this week. This whole thing has been like a sucker punch in the gut. I get up in the morning thinking it is just some bad dream and then when I turn the TV on, it's like a punch in the gut all over again. As a proud Virginian, this has had a profound impact on me. I can only imagine how those directly affected and those in the immediate VT family are feeling.
Sadly, history has shown us that another tragedy will happen. The only question is where and when. I have some very strong feelings on ways to minimize risk related to this. I know that now is not the time nor the place but that day has to come soon.  :'( :'(

Brian, you're right about the inherent lack of information in DIII.  The DI sites and the media give you information overload, but we're at the other end of the spectrum.  Thankfully, sites such as this do an excellent job of filling the void.  I did speak with a former Guilford player today when I dropped by to watch the end of the Guilford women's 12-8 lacrosse win over Greensboro.  He said some guards were in to visit this week, including a possible JC transfer from one of the fairly decent local technical and community college programs.  He also commented that 6'10" back-up center Tyler Sanborn has dropped about 20 pounds from last fall's freshman playing weight and is looking a lot quicker and more agile.  I'm not sure how Palombo will play this, but I think Tyler will get a lot more playing time this year and may even start beside Strong.

jacketlawyer - I think Hokie Nation is a lot larger this week - wear that tie with pride.  On a related note, the Washington Nationals wore VT caps versus the Braves last night.

allsky - I'm also a native Virginian and this has shaken us all.  You want to do something, but you don't know what to do.  Stay strong.

Thanks Hasa. Very kool on the Nationals wearing VT hats.  8)

Creator, protect our youth from all harm.

I wonder whether its the worst massacre in U.S. history.  I think Wounded Knee was bad, and many others.

My heart goes out to all who suffer.  May they find peace.

God Bless VT.  I think everything that can be said has been and all we can do is pray for all affected.

On a basketball note, someone asked about news.  Chad Warner, HSC assistant coach, is leaving HSC to be the head coach at Shorter College in Rome, GA.

Here's the link:  http://shorter.edu/about/news/2007/2007_04_18_chad_warner.htm

Good luck to Chad as he takes the next step in his career.

What does everyone think of adding a defensive player of the year award to go along with POY and all the other awards? Maybe even an all-defensive team and a sixth-man of the year award? I'd be real interested to see what the coaches think are the best defensive players, and it would be nice to see defensive players get recognized if they aren't good enough offensively to get all-ODAC and/or aren't asked or expected to provide much statistical offensive impact, example: thomas sumpter.

Recognition for something other than scoring?

Great idea ... I doubt if it will ever happen ...

STH > Congratulations. What's next?

I heard over the weekend that both Matt Kittrell and Eric Rolander are transfering. Hopefully this will not impact the Tigers too much and I wish both players the best of luck !!!!!
