but i will say that "the system" or the "fun-n-gun" or whatever they call it wouldn't win many games in the usasac and i'm shocked they've won as many games as they have in the odac over the last few years - i do wonder if having a veteran coach like bob johnson on the sidelines may have helped them make some in-game adjustments, though...i'm not criticizing the current coaching staff because they're in a tough situation, but they didn't adjust to what the monarchs were doing in the second half and pretty much every possession was a carbon copy of the previous one (mu shot over 72% in the second half...77% on 2 point shots)

is it just me or does it sound like he is indirectly saying the ODAC sucks?

Kinda, but naw, he wouldn't be saying that.  He's still got two away games against Guilford and Virginia Wesleyan.  It would be premature.

... and suddenly the topic deftly shifts away from basketball ... Narch, is this what happens when the politicians say they were quoted out of context?  :)

We need to break this model on Saturday.

R-MC has won each of the last 43 meetings dating back to Feb. 9, 1977 when the
Generals defeated the Yellow Jackets, 75-73, in Lexington.

Listed below are six games over the past seven seasons in which the
Generals fell to the Yellow Jackets by six points or less.

63-58 at R-MC (12/2/06)
64-63 at W&L (2/3/07)
71-67 (OT) at R-MC (1/22/06)
63-58 at R-MC (12/4/04)
66-61 at W&L (1/25/04)
76-70 (OT) at W&L (2/7/00)

Wow, I had no idea it had been that long.  I'm equally surprised these two schools haven't met more in the last 30 years, but I also know RMC was not a charter member of the ODAC.

Actually, RMC was a ODAC charter member, just played DII b-ball until about '89 or '90.  Is this the longest winning streak in the ODAC and how does it stack up nationally?

78rmc,   It has been awhile. Hope to be at crenshaw next wednesday evening. I think the Jackets will start slow but end the year well above 500.

Mr. Ypsi

43 straight, eh?  Take heart, Generals - Notre Dame had won 43 straight over Navy! ;)

nah...just expressing amazement that the team i saw monday night had won over 50% of their odac games the last two seasons...if i wanted to say the odac sucks, i would (just read my comments on the baseball boards :)) - i have a ton of respect for what vwc, guilford, hsc and rmc have done and even lowly lc gave the monarchs all they could handle - i think these conferences are pretty even, with the odac being perhaps a bit stronger at the top, but weaker at the bottom (which is to be expected in a larger conference) - i do think that usasac teams, by and large, are more athletic than odac teams which means they are more suited to play the style that ehc plays...

i told you to stop talking to my wife, '85 :)

looks like the pride gave big ben his opportunities tonight (28 pts on 13 of 19 shooting and 12 boards) but the others around him couldn't produce enough - on the pride side, looks like they were pretty balanced with four in double figures - good win for gcp and the usasac...hopefully the monarchs can do the same next week :) (unfortunately i won't be able to make it...if it were a weekend game i'd give it strong consideration, 'cause the mu/gcq game last year was one of the most enjoyable games i've ever seen)

Hey everyone, as already reported, Greensboro topped Guilford, 71-66.  Congratulations to the Pride on a well-played game.

As expected, their gym was packed and the students from both schools were in rare form.  I've been to games at Duke and it reminded me of a mini-Cameron Indoor tonight.  I think the Guilford football team got there at 4:00 pm for a 7:30 start.  I got there at 6:30 and seats were hard to find.  Even though the Quakers lost, it was a fun game to attend.  It was a coordinated effort by both sets of stands tonight, with the Quakers all in black and the Pride decked out in green.  The Soup Bowl trophy was paraded around and, for the most part, the collective cheers were in good fun.

Now to the game, Guilford jumped out to 10-2 and 16-10 leads only to see the Pride tie it at 16.   The Quakers then got two three-pointers to go up 22-16.  The Pride came back again.  It was 34-30 GCQ with 4.5 seconds to go, but GCP hit a three at the buzzer to make it 34-33 GCQ at the half.  GCP scored the first two baskets of the second half to go up 37-34.  It was nip and tuck for a bit before Greensboro spurted to a 50-42 lead.  Guilford rallied and had a chance to tie at 52, but missed the back end of a one-and-one, so 52-51 Pride.  From that point forward, it was close, even tied at 54, but Greensboro hit lots of threes down the stretch.  I was very disappointed with Guilford's turnovers in clutch situations.  I'm not sure of the exact count, but the Quakers turned it over about four straight possessions when the game was on the line.  Ultimately, they were forced to foul and the Pride made their shots.

As Narch said, Ben Strong got his 28, but others needed to score as well.  Oh well.  I give credit to Greensboro ... they earned this win.  I think the atmosphere at Hanes helped carry them a lot, but good teams have to also win in hostile environments.  When you're ranked, you're everyone's "big" game and tonight was no exception.  This is truly a rivalry game.  It reminded me of Guilford's old NAIA days when 4 or 5 future-NBA players might be on the court.  Tonight's atmosphere was what I wish all DIII games could be.  Peace

sludge

Greensboro won a very exciting game against Guilford.  Greensboro shot 43% from three point range, and was above 80% from the line.  Guilford wasn't so good from either of those, but even with all of that, I think Guilford could have won with fewer turnovers.

This is a new team this year, even with the seniors in the mix.  Some of the turnovers were a matter of "whoops, I though you were going that way".  This will improve going forward.

One bright spot about this early loss will be a big reduction in hype.  I won't miss that.
Then, we'll just play ball.  Cool!

My friend, Ferrum was 2-2 coming into this game.  Always good to see the ODAC win, but Ferrum may not be a good judge of quality for the emus.
