Saturday the Generals were merrily pounding RMC - up about 14 at the half. Missed free throws and bunnies as well as RMC's D put W&L in a whole with 2 minutes to go.
W&L rallied to tie. The OT was back & forth with RMC up 4 with 2 minutes to go. W&L closed them out when Bienemann grabbed a loose ball & stuck the layup with 1 second to go for the win. ;D

Sunday the Gennies fell victim to a very well coached VW. W&L hit 2's and VW answered with 3's. VW played great D & put on a shooting clinic for about a 15 point win.  >:(

Don't be too upset baseline jam.. W&L looked like a better team than they were last season, and Bienmann went for 17 pts. and 8 rebs... the Generals should be a decent team this season.

Tip of the hat to Randolph-Macon today, they just beat Roanoke easily by 15 (well easily based on the final score) a day after Roanoke beat powerhouse VA Wesleyan.

Too early to be official, but it is looking as if the ODAC title may be up for grabs like it was in football.  Very encouraged by this win against Roanoke.

Thanks for the description of the W&L game, baseline. 8)

Would appreciate some more information on the controversial call that went against Norman Hassell at the end of the VWC/RC game from someone who was there. Thanks.

Good win for HSC. They looked good for that style of basketball. I hope Bubba doesn't get any ideas.(ha-ha)The real basketball cranks up again this evening. I hope we can pay Averett back with a win at our place. We have a long break after this game. I hope it doesn't hurt anything.

Well with about 13 seconds left an RC down by 1, LaPorte was inbounding the ball with Hassell pressuring the ball, and LaPorte stuck the ball over the line, trying to bait Hassell into touching it. From where I was sitting, it didn't look like Hassell touched it, but it happened very fast so maybe it did. Anyway the referree called a technical on Hassell, who had 4 fouls, and then said that it was Hassell's 5th. But the rule states that a player can't foul out if a technical is his 5th. So Hassell should have been in the game at the end, when the two teams were battling for the rebound when RC hit the game winning basket with 1 second left... maybe he would have come down with it, maybe not...  but I do know that VWC is circling the next Roanoke game on their schedule and putting stars beside it.

DWC - thanks for the clarification. Very interesting.

DWC - I just consulted the 2007 rules book (I don't have the 2008 version, but I doubt the interpretation on this would have changed). If he did in fact touch the ball, it is considered a delay of game infraction - a delay of game infraction results in an indirect technical foul (Rule 10-3.21). Indirect technical fouls are not to be counted as a personal foul for the player nor as a team foul, but Roanoke still would have gotten the two free throws and the ball at the point of infraction (Rule 10-4.2). I don't know if the ball was touched since I wasn't at the game, but your grievance regarding Hassell being given a personal foul are warranted it appears.

PS: You can foul out on a technical foul if it is your 5th personal foul, but for it to be a personal foul it would have to be a direct technical foul, not an indirect as in this case; Rule 10-8.2.

Interesting tidbits on indirect technical fouls:
The official scorer is not allowed to remove the official score book and take it to the home team's locker room (10-3.2)
If a team makes a sub between halves, if they don't report it to the official scorer it is an indirect techniccal foul (10-3.9b)

Yea.... it was an indirect technical foul... that's why it was so controversial, Hassell shouldn't have fouled out and should have been it for that last play. Also, from my vantage point, it didn't look like the ball touched Hassell at all but like I said it happened so fast you couldn't really tell.

All controversy aside... it was a great game and anyone who wasn't there missed a barnburner.

very juicy stuff as far as the indirect technical foul is concerned.  my previous understanding of the call was that it was a technical on the player who hit the ball illegally.  but it sounds as if it goes as a bench foul???  still unclear exactly though.  i have played ball for a very long time and am very familiar with the rules.  hitting the ball illegally constitutes a delay of game??? so who should have gotten the technical???  the bench???  also from my understanding once the ball crosses the plane of the inbound line it is fair game, even if it is still in the inbounders hand.  this could be completely wrong but i used to be a player that would do exactly what josh did.  savvy play, but i have been told by refs not to cross the plane with the ball, as it becomes live once you do.  scotty, i dont have a rule book but i would be interested in whether i am correct or wrong.  i am leaning towards thinking i am wrong, and was mis-informed by a two dollar ref when i was younger.  there are some great out of bounds rules in the rule book that most people (including refs) dont know.  i have seen some big games go the wrong way when a ref interprets a rule one way, and the player in question interprets it differently.

Hampden-Sydney evens the score against Averett 78-70.

For you USA South fans that were down on the system...Emory and Henry dominates Greensboro tonight 111-95 in Emory.  I really wish Methodist could play at Emory this year for a little payback game.  As a lot of teams have found out in the past, Emory is an extremely tough place to play.  This game had Bob Johnson toughness written all over it for the WASPS...

Yeah, Hassell didn't slap at the ball or anything like that but whatever he did was enough to warrant a tech from the ref.

Same Greensboro team that beat Guilford....looks as though the Wasps are inconsistent which makes sense with the system...hopefully it will all come together after this long layoff....still a great win nonetheless....

The Greensboro team that I saw was full of hustle, had quick guards, and had a great outside shooting game.  Is that what you saw?

Maybe they ran out of depth against ya.
