I just got home from Guilford where the Quakers thumped the Monarchs rather soundly.  Strong had 21 and 10 rebounds followed by Henson with 14 and Belkoski with 12 points and 10 rebounds.  Three guys had 10 points for Methodist, but they had an awful shooting night (18 of 63).  Lehmann wore the collar at 0 for 10 and McDade was 3 of 15.  As I expected, GC dominated the boards as well.  To be honest, MU was out of it from the start.  The only time it was tied was 0-0.  Guilford jumped out to an early lead and then held a 12-26 point lead the rest of the game.  Methodist definitely has some leapers and quickness, but it wasn't their night.

EMU narrowly beats randolph college 57-53!

'nova - i'm sure if that game were in fayetteville it would have been a 2 point quaker win instead of a 26 point quaker win...we've established that home court is worth at least 24 points :)

i listened to the last few minutes of the game after i got the kids down, and honestly, i wish i hadn't...not their night is putting it very mildly...you're so polite when the quakers win big...

now that i think of it, the quakers DID beat mu by 2 in fayetteville last year...maybe there's something to this home court = +24 points thing

narch, as you know, I saw last year's game in Fayetteville as well as this year's game in Greensboro.  Dragan (sp) had a fantastic game last year for MU and obviously that piece is now missing.  Guilford is a very experienced team and is clicking right now.  I think Guilford will have a lot of 20 point wins this year whether at home or on the road, but Greensboro proved the Quakers can be beaten.  No point kicking a team and its fans when they're down - what goes around comes around.  I've definitely been on both sides of that fence.  Guilford also didn't shoot as well as I'd like, but their height and depth created big problems for MU.  Not trying to rub it in at all, but the Quakers should have put up 90 tonight due to missed lay-ups and subpar FT shooting.  Poor 3-point shooting hurt the Monarchs, but I think about 60 points was what their effort should have netted with a reasonable 9 of 24 on threes instead of their actual 5 of 24.  MU will win their share this season, but GC was clearly the better team.

Hasa....you mentioned being on the "other side of the fence"......

As a CNU fan this year, I gotta ask.....where the hell is the fence? I can't find a fence anywhere!  :D

Good point, CNU85.  :)  Well, I was in the stands (with a few parents and about 25 other people) in 1998-99 when the Quakers went 3-21.  That was analogous to building a fence on the rim of the Grand Canyon.  If you're on  the losing side, it is a steep climb out!  What a depressing season!  The last eight years have seen rather steady progress, so teams can change the culture.  Of course, it always helps to recruit a guy like Ben Strong.  lol

BTW, Ben now has 100 points for the 4-game start to the season.  He had 27 versus S. Carolina, but exhibition games don't count.

sludge

Nice team defensive effort tonight by Guilford.

Disappointing to see a top d3 team dismantled by 5th year HS players, as Guilford was in thier recent loss to prep power Hargrave Military Academy 88-49http://www.hargrave.edu/athletics/sport_index.php?category_id=19

As deceptive as that schedule is for Hargrave, I will be almost willing to bet it was the JV team of Guilford.  Notice the schedule has plenty of colleges (D2 Pfeiffer, D1 UNC).  I dont think the varsity teams of these schools will play Hargrave.

although it wasn't the guilford varsity that hargrave beat, it wouldn't shock me to see the hargrave pg team beat most of the top notch d3 programs...they've got 10-12 kids who will be d1 players, and many (maybe most) of them will play in a major conference (sec, big east, acc)

they are also bigger, faster and deeper than most d3 teams - they've got one player under 6'2", and he happens to be a 5'11" pg who was one of the best in the state of nc last year...pitts would start right away at every d3 that i've ever seen play...the kid can play - they've got 3 guards who are 6'4", two who are 6'2" and one that's 6'5"...their guards are built like d3 forwards, and they're quicker - they've got 5 guys over 6'7"...and most of them are a beefy 6'7"+ - they are the #1 ranked pg team in the country - i would contend that they could beat a large percentage of d1 and d2 teams, as well - the fact that these guys are even playing a d3 jv team is shocking to me
