Guilford topped Emory 82-67 behind Strong's 28 points and 15 rebounds.  Looks as though Clay Henson had another good game with 18 points, including 4 of 9 behind the arc.  Belkoski's stats look solid as well with 15 points.  Incredibly, Emory had 50 FT attempts, but only hit 31 (62%).  The Eagles started the game 4 of 27 from the floor and finished at 23.5%.  Meanwhile, GC shot 45.2% from the floor.  The Quakers improve to 6-2 while Emory drops to 7-4.

Huge game at Ragan-Brown Wednesday night versus Hampden-Sydney!  Go Quakers!

Good for the Quakers!

The Generals played poorly against Emory & lost a tight one. I knew GC could take it to them.
If you make every game a life and death proposition, you're going to have problems. For one thing, you'll be dead a lot. Dean Smith

Just got back from the Bridgewater-Shenandoah game...

BC won 59-58. With nine seconds left, BC's Dominic Trawick was fouled and shot a one and one. He hit the first of two, SU got the rebound, drove the length of the court and Jeremiah Lawrence missed the go ahead layup. Four Eagles jumped up to defend it. Odds are one of the Eagles fouled him, but no call was made. Great game!

Big win for the Eagles over a Hornets team that came in 10-2 (having beaten Guilford).

Two more big wins for the Tigers this weekend.  HSC (now 7-1) won by 10 points over Mary Washington (6-4) yesterday and then defeated New Jersey City (8-4) by 15 points today.  Turner King had 39, Drew Prehmus had 32, and Troy Kaase had 27 points in the 2 games combined.  Tyler Murray, Byron Lawton, Paul Matthews, Jyri Laakso, Lane Medlin, Karlis Trops, and Brent Dillard all made key contributions in what was a very good weekend for the Tigers.  This is a team that, with 7 straight victories, is starting to look excellent at times.  A player from the 2003 Final Four team said he thought the Tigers were starting to look good enough to possibly make it to the Final Four again.

Time will tell.  In the coming 2 weeks, the Tigers have to play Guilford this coming Wednesday, Bridgewater and EMU on the weekend, Virginia Wesleyan the following Wednesday, and Randolph-Macon the Saturday after that, so we will see how the Tigers are able to handle a very tough ODAC conference.  EMU at home shouldn't be too much of a task, but the Tigers will play the Quakers, Eagles, and Marlins on the road, so this is going to be a challenging two weeks.

The record of ODAC teams in games against other conferences' teams is now 34-18.
With the four ODAC wins this week, it's now 38-18 (.679).

With 8 more wins over the last 2 days, the ODAC record is now 46-18 (.719).  Terribly good!

6 of the 10 ODAC teams have a record of 6-2 or better.

I was at the game yesterday, and was easily one of the longest games I have ever watched.  Emory lived at the FT line, but as the box showed they couldn't hit anything.  Guilford had a huge size advantage over the Eagles and used it to their advantage.  Strong looked a little shaky against the double (or triple) team at times, Kimbrough's emotions got the better of him at one point, but Belkoski, as usuall, always seemed to be in the right place at the right time.  Overall a good effort by Guilford.  From the few games I've seen down here in GA this is a strong year for the ODAC.

Also, the Guilford crowd at the game was amazing.  The Quaker nation should be proud.

Thanks for your report, kramsay.  I knew some GC fans would be there, but I'm glad the Quakers had great support.  With 54 total fouls (and 80 FT's attempted), that's a lot of the game with the clock stopped.  In reading the boxscore, I noted Ben was 10 of 24, so your description explains a lot.  Thanks also for your comments about Kimbrough ... he had a technical foul and I wondered why.

For all of you who support a school in a small town, be thankful for the coverage you get by your local media.  Here's the entire coverage by the Greensboro News and Record of yesterday's important game:

"Guilford 82, Emory 67:  Ben Strong scored 28 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as visiting Guilford (6-2) snapped Emory's six-game winning streak."

No boxscore.  No more text.  Buried in the middle of page six in the sports section.  Pitiful.

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to Wednesday's HSC game.  If any Tiger fans are coming, please let me know and I'll say hello.  Go Quakers!

Thanks, baselinejam.  I had noted W&L's earlier loss to the Eagles.  Sometimes you can't put a lot of stock in games versus common opponents, but it is a small barometer of comparative strength.  Guilford jumped out to an early 33-13 lead at Emory, but let the Eagles draw closer.  Some game I'd like to see the Quakers play 40 minutes of smashmouth basketball (if I can borrow that expression from football).  Guilford's an exciting team partly because it allows other teams to make the game closer than it ought to be.  lol   Good luck to the Generals this season.

Agree with Kramsey, Belkoski's contribution was huge and as usual his timeliness was remarkable.  And-ones, just when you need them, steals too.  I thought Belkoski was player of the game,  but then I saw Strong's stat line.  Anyway, great game for Eric!

I think Emory was the most hustling team Guilford has played this year (surpassing maybe even Shenandoah on that front).  They're in the UAA, another dead-tough conference,  playing against the likes of Rochester, Brandeis, and Washington U.  Emory is used to shooting much better than they did against Guilford, and I think the Quakers played fine defense the whole game.  (I guess that doesn't account for the foul ine defense, and for a couple of open threes missed, though).  "Charges taken" don't show on the stat sheet, but at least two hard ones go to Kimbrough, and a big one to Sanborn, maybe others.

Henson and Belkoski jump out at you frmo the game, but I'd also mention that Sanborn had 11 rebounds and played fine D with fouls under control.  Kimbrough game Emory fits all day on both ends of the floor;  on one memorable play he split the trap, which destroyed Emory's defense and set Henson up for a 3.

Very good to see Strong returning to form and feeling healthy again.  Nice D from that guy, too.  I was amazed that Emory tried the paint as much as they did.

Tough week coming up.  Go Quakers!

The matchup everyone's been waiting for happens Sunday, Jan. 13th in NC!!!!!!
Virginia Wesleyan vs. Guilford!!!!!!!

Rikki_Tikki_Tavi

Had the opportunity to watch Hampden-Sydney this past weekend at the Freeman Center. They looked very good. Not only was I impressed with the play of Kaase and King, but Tyler Murray I think impressed me a lot. He's quick, athletic and has a great first step off the dribble. He made a couple very nice baseline moves against NJCU that were filthy.

Good to see some HSC alums at the game cheering their squad on. Hope they enjoyed their time in Newport News. Good luck to HSC the rest of the way.

It is an extremely important game, but I'm sure the Quakers will not look past Hampden-Sydney on the 9th and Randolph-Macon on the 12th!  Talk about a tough row to hoe!  I'm really glad all three games are in Greensboro, but I am very disappointed the GC students will not be back for any of them!  That's a real shame.

Hasa....speaking as one Tiger fan, I am very thankful for the Mayberry Gazette (aka The Farmville Herald) covering Tiger athletics. Not only that, you get the bonus coverage of reports from every crick and holler around Buckingham, Cumberland, and Prince Edward County. I know who is having dinner with whom, who is in town visiting with family, etc. It's great!!  :D
Sounds like it could be a great year in the ODAC. I am still trying to get my hoops groove on. Only a few more football games. By the Super Bowl I should be in full hoops swing just in time for the stretch run and March Madness.  :D

Not so good news from Bridgewater...

Jake Johnson, transfer from Wooster who had moved up to 7th man for the Eagles this season, is out for the season. He was averaging 13 minutes a game, was shooting 47% from the floor, and was pulling down a couple boards a game. Johnson had a season high 9 points in our overtime win against EMU.

If anyone was at the SU-BC game on Saturday, you saw what happened to him. Best wishes to him, and hopefully he comes back next season.
