Question,  why is it that Guilford has a 10-4 record when they have played 15 games. Why are they not 10-5.

Pat Coleman

Because exhibitions don't count against your record.

Pat , just a question. When did that fact start? I know of a team in the past that carried a lost to a D-1 team on their record all year. Was that their own choice?

Yeah, a little bit.  I welcome all posters, of course, but I miss some of the gentlemen and -women we used to see (steelyglen, jeloesel, et al) ... where have they gone?  Hopefully, we can all avoid personal attacks and offer more constructive posts.

This certainly isn't the most hospitable forum for newcomers. I've often resigned to just reading instead of participating in the banter, as things tend to get personal fairly quickly. I'm of the school that says everyones opinion is equal and the more posters their are, knowledgeable or not, the healthier the board is. I'm sure a lot of the personal stuff is unintentional but it'd be nice to see new posters welcomed instead of critiqued the moment they show up. If their first post happens to be different, it at least got them onto the board and participating in discussion on our ODAC conference and D3 basketball. Just food for thought from a daily reader and occasional contributor.

Sorry -- every community has the potential to be like that a little bit, so I hope you stick it out.  It's hard to earn credibility sometimes.

I think your five posts have been good ones, so I hope you post up some more.

Appreciate the kind words.  Every community certainly does have that potential.  If earning "credibility" on this forum was similar to every other community, I wouldn't have spent time making those observations.  It's just a bit more difficult here, for better or for worse.  I've noticed some of the old regulars are absent and being missed; if newcomers aren't welcomed the board might slowly fizzle out.  I enjoy the board and would hate to see that happen.  I've been around for more than 5 posts but my old similar SN disapeared (or i forgot the password), probably due to inactivity; I only say that because I remember a lot of the contributors that are now absent.  Thanks for taking the time to comment Pat.  Anyway, carry on with things more pertinent to ODAC ball.

Well then welcome back.

I've found the board to a congenial group with a lot of knowledgeable ODAC fans.
I can't recall opening posts or posts from novices with such viritol and hyperbole as I've seen recently. You know the old adage you only get 1 chance to make a good first impression. That being said I think there are plenty of 2nd chances on this board for serious ODAC fans.

For Guilford, Bridgewater is next.  Tricksy, yes, they likes nasty three pointers.  We doesn't like nasty threes.  We must defend that and crush the passing game.  Rebounds, oooh, very important.  Difficult, but we sneaks up on them a steals the rock!  Yes, then we must mash them to bits.

Tyler Sanborn's back, so helpful.  Maybe not 100%, oh no, but still very nice.  Oh yes.

this won't be popular, but if you filter through the "vitriol and hyperbole" in lynchburgcollege's post, he/she raises some points that i'm sure others have thought, if not expressed - i would never call for the firing of a coach, but at some point you do have to wonder if they'll ever be able to contend - sometimes it takes a change at the top to make that happen - averett went through some lean years before jimmy allen came along...although nothing as prolonged as lc's futility over the last 15 or so years, it was certainly more pronounced, ending with a winless season in 03/04 (which was preceded by a 2 and a 4 win season)...and he's turned that program around and given them some respectability - is it so wrong that a fan wants that for his team, even if he is over 500 miles away and calls for someone's life to be turned upside down?

Am I remembering correctly from earlier posts that Tyler Sanborn is back?  Is he looking 100%?

Not that I have seen any of the teams, but based on filtering the scuttlebutt here and looking at the records, to me that puts Guilford right back at the top, though by no means a sure thing.
Tyler Sanborn did play for Guilford versus Roanoke, but he didn't start.  It was his first action since being injured in the January 9 game against Hampden-Sydney.  He played about 10 minutes and looked reasonably good - getting a few rebounds and scoring two baskets.  Since it was a blowout, I'm sure Coach Palombo wanted to ease him back into the line-up.  If he's still healthy after this stint, I'd expect him to start again soon.  At 6'10" and good on the boards, Tyler's play in the post allows Ben to play a little farther from the rim.

As mentioned before, the D-I exhibition versus South Carolina in Columbia was possible because Gamecock Head Coach Dave Odom is Guilford College Class of 1965 where he lettered in three sports - football, basketball and baseball.  Dave's very supportive of Guilford and saw the game as an opportunity to showcase the school and Ben Strong while giving his team a preseason test.  I've met Dave at several school functions and at Homecoming football games - a nice guy who'll always root for the Quakers.

Swickrath has to know he's got to start producing.  No school wants to be 9th or 10th year after year.  I'm not privy to conversations inside the LC Athletics Dept., but I bet the AD and Swickrath have talked about expectations for the 2007-08 season.  It's not just Lynchburg, that sort of thing happens at almost every school.  To me, when you don't have football, men's basketball is arguably your most visible sport.  The Hornets excel in many other sports, so men's hoops is quite conspicuous by its lack of success.

I heard that King, Trops, and Medlin are tansferring after this year. I believe it to be a vicious rumor but you can never tell. I was told that Trops and King want to get closer to home and Medlin is discouraged about playing time and a D1 post player is coming in next year. I hope this is all wrong.

mybleedinghands

i've found that any rumors over transfers at D3 hold about as much water as all the rumors that swirl around in regards to D1 recruiting - 99% of them are just a bunch of lunacy someone concocted on a message board to get people talking...

tigerrat

I believe you to be right. It also seems when a team is on a losing streak, rumors fly high. Those 3 seem happy at HSC.
