final thoughts:
brian it had to be tough to pick RMC over your beloved Tigers (nice pick tho')

is Swickwrath out at Lynchburg? My crystal ball says yes, but can ANYONE win there?

can anybody derail a Guilford v. Va. Wesleyan final?

only 2 go to the "dance"...

the system is what it is...you think the E&H player who set the record for three's made would rather win more than he loses or maybe would like to play defense at least 1 possession per game or possibly be playing in the tournament? E&H was a factor before the "system".

catch Bridgewater in the tournament if you can...just sayin'!

Will the fall of Sydney continue? What's Bubba's future Tiger fans?

Have a great tournament guys...good luck to all...I am out!

Random thoughts:  Tigers beat R-MC Friday in Salem to knock Jackets from NCAA;D Bubba's future at H-S is fine for the immediate future If there was ever any doubt, the Macon win bought him at least another year.(as long as he chooses to stay) Shaver's act was a tough one to follow. Guilford won't get upset in the first round this year. (That one for you Hasa  ;), Swickrath gone at LC. SOMEONE can win at LC but will be tough. LAX is king. SHAME on Brian for picking the Jackets over the Tigers. SHAME....SHAME. So what if you got it right!!  :D

See some of you folks in Salem Friday.......GO TIGERS!!!  8)

Not bad allsky7....not bad. I'm off to buy a lottery ticket.  :D  Ok....Ok.....so picking the Tigers over the Jackets was the only real "go out on a limb moment".  :D

Hornet Head Men's Basketball Coach John Swickrath Announces Resignation

sorry to hear that, nice guy. shook his hand once when he came up to macedo's office before a game. He seemed like a promising coach. lynchburg was a tough team in 03-04. That trapping stuff they did was annoying but effective in spurts. any reason why they stopped doing that? Anyway, i wish him the best of luck. Woolridge is a very good player, hopefully the next guy they hire will be able to utilize his talent and athleticisim.

1. LCasid has to be Scottie 2 hottie,  correct?

2.  Did he really resign, or is this like JMU and Coach Dean Keener, where the school forces him to resign?
I believe STH is the assistant SID at LC, but I certainly don't have any information about item #2.  Based on past history at all schools, however, most of you know how these sorts of meetings go down.

I think it could be an interesting tournament especially on the left side of that bracket. VWC or Guilford? Who do y'all think has the toughest road to Salem? It may be easy to pick VWC because they will most likely have to win on the road and road games in the ncaa tournament especially in Pennsylvania haven't been very kind to the Marlins. But with teams like Wash U (final four team in 07) UW-Stevens Point (former champion) Wooster (final four 06, 07), UW-Whitewater and Mary Hardin Baylor waiting on the horizons, Guilford's run might be just as tough. Any thoughts?

Getting into the Final Four is tremendously tough.  One has to beat some of the very best teams in the country.

Going back to 2003, Hampden-Sydney (going into the tournament as national #4) was going into a sectional that included #1 Randolph-Macon, #13 Illinois Wesleyan, and #15 UW - Oshkosh.  Oshkosh knocked off the Yellow Jackets, so Hampden-Sydney didn't have to try to beat them for a second time that season in order to get to the Final Four .... but they had to defeat #13 and #15.

Then in 2006, Virginia Wesleyan (going into the tournament as national  #7) had a somewhat easier sectional, playing #18 Lincoln in the Sweet Sixteen and then unranked William Paterson (which had defeated unranked Widener) in the Elite Eight.  The Marlins' opposition wasn't crazy tough until they got to the Final Four, when they defeated #11 Illinois Wesleyan and #3 Wittenberg.

Last year, Virginia Wesleyan (going into the tournament as national  #4) had to defeat #3 Mississippi in the Sweet Sixteen and #19 Guilford (which had knocked off unranked Lincoln) to get to the Final Four.  Then they defeated #8 Washington University in the Final Four before falling to #6 Amherst in the National Championship game.

As I look at this year's bracket, it appears that #21 Virginia Wesleyan may have a tougher route than #8 Guilford to get into the Sweet Sixteen, as they will probably have to defeat #16 Ursinus (25-2) in the second round on Saturday evening.  If Ursinus gets upset in the first round by Baptist Bible (yea, RIGHT, check out this team's record at http://www.d3hoops.com/school/BBC/mens/2008 ... it appears to me that the Baptist Bible Defenders are the easiest draw in the field of 59 teams), the Marlins would cakewalk on Saturday evening into the section, but Baptist Bible will not defeat Ursinus, so it's a moot point.  If the Marlins get by Worcester Polytechnic (21-6) on Friday evening, they'll play Ursinus on Saturday evening.  Then the Marlins will play an unranked opponent in the Sweet Sixteen (Gettysburg, Scranton, Salem State, or Elms) but would have to face probably #10 UMass - Dartmouth or #13 Rochester in the Elite Eight.

#8 Guilford will have an easier time of getting into the sectional, with a first-round game on Friday against St. Mary's (17-11, and they better defeat the Seahawks because the Quakers are a far better team, having already defeated Virginia Wesleyan three times and a number of good ODAC teams) and then either Averett (the Quakers beat them by 19 points last time) or Widener on Saturday evening.  However, once the Quakers get to the sectional (possibly in Regan Brown Fieldhouse!), they are going to have a tough, tough field of opponents to contend with.  They'll probably face either #12 Mary Hardin-Baylor, #14 Millsaps, or #19 Maryville in the Sweet Sixteen and then get to play either #6 Augustana, #9 UW - Stevens Point, #11 Washington U, #17 Wooster, or #18 St. Thomas in the Elite Eight .... fortunately, they only have to play ONE of these teams on that Saturday night ... ;)

Both of these teams can get to Salem ..... I'm hoping to see both of them there!

If the Quakers win the first two rounds of the NCAAs, my take is that the Quakers would not host a sectional unless Augustana and Washington U were knocked out of the tournament during the first two rounds.  Then the Quakers might be in competition with Wooster and St. Thomas for hosting a sectional.

If the Marlins won the first two rounds, they could conceivably host a sectional, but only if UMass - Dartmouth, Rochester, and Gettysburg are ALL knocked out of the tournament during the first two rounds.  Not likely to happen.

Looking at St. Mary's roster and typical starters, I think we'll see:

#45 Calvin Wise F 6'4"/215  12.5 ppg, 7.1 rpg  (matched with Sanborn?)
#21 Alex Irmer C 6'7"/207 12.4 ppg, 6.9 rpg  (matched with Strong?)
# 2  Mike Smelkinson G 5'5"/150 13.1 ppg  (matched with Kimbrough?)
#13 Alex Franz G 6'1"/175 7.3 ppg  (matched with Belkoski?)
#32 Tyson Lesesne G 6'0"/175 17.9 ppg (matched with Henson?)

Looks like balanced scoring, but a more guard dominated offense.  The Seahawks are .490 from 2-point range, .355 on threes and .694 at the line, so they can shoot.   They're averaging 82.7 ppg, but giving up 78.1.  Obviously, Guilford is taller, but good outside shooting teams can give the Quakers fits.

Interesting fluff piece on the St. Mary's team...gives a little insight as to how they are playing right now, and how they plan to attack the Quakers...I love the quote about Calvin Wise saying he"could bench press four 6-10 players.  He' strong as an ox."  A little bulletin board material for the Quaker big men...not that they need it.

Sounds like a good story, and a tough team coming to Greensboro, but I don't think it will be enough on GC's home floor!  Interested to see how Irmer does also...

Man, did I read it correctly?  d3hoops.com picking the Quakers to win the title.  I'm not sure I like all that pressure - sometimes it's better to be the darkhorse.  After last season, however, Guilford can't wear that moniker again!

Heck, who needs it.  Pure baloney!  The future doesn't exist.  Neither does the past.
Remember Bridgewater!

I'd rather consider this:

Lifting four Sanborns would be about 1000 pounds, so Calvin Wise must be strong; it sounds like he makes Troy Kaase look like a slight little thing.
