Why are Hasanova's "2 cents" always worth more than mine?   ;D

Also, I guess I should apologize to ODACHOOPS as I must have misunderstood his "full ride" statement.  As most of the very knowledgeable posters here know, VWC really isn't in the position to throw money at people...even basketball players.

And if we are talking about advantages/disadvantages in recruiting...there is a reason that all of the materials you receive from VWC have pictures of the beach on them.   ;)

It's the exchange rate.  :)

Marques Fitch, another pretty fair ball player at VWC, left the coaching ranks for a front office job with the Sacramento Kings. Way to go Marques!

Any further news regarding b'ball up on The Hill?

I just know that the search is now open, the job being advertised nationally, and that a committee is being pieced together to ensure that all candidates are examined to the fullest extent. I think the shock of Dee deciding to pass up the job has worn off and everyone is ready to get to work and pin down that next head coach.

There have been an abundance of applications coming in...let's hope that the committee can sift through and find the best men for the job!

And congrats to Marques...he was an outstanding player and competitor, as well as a great leader for the Marlins when he played. I know he will take those skills and excel on the left coast.

HSC should have zero problem receiving a good pool of candidates to choose from. LC had more than a couple handful of coaches apply, so I see HSC not doing any worse! In this day and age of D3, good young assistant coaches and high school coaches from around the country will jump at the opportunity to take over a program, and a successful program will make the job even more appealing.

Can a HS coach successfully take over a D3 program without having any recruiting experience ? Recruiting ability seems to be just as important as coaching ability. Thoughts will be appreciated !!!!

Ron Rose, IWU's coach, had very minimal recruiting experience (none of it d3), and was a high school coach the 9 years before his hire.  His first two recruiting classes are (on paper - too early to judge on the court) among the finest in the nation.

I'm not sure that recruiting is learned so much as you've either got 'it' or you don't.

Disappointing a Shaver protege does not seem to be in the picture. :(  It'll be strange to follow Tigers hoops without that legacy at hand.

Shaver came to HSC from EHS, and I think he was a pretty good D3 coach.
I guess I answered my own question !!!

Jacketlawyer:

I hear Coach Rhoads is ready to apply for the job !!!!

I hope Coach Doino applies for the position at HSC. He has the experience of 5 years now as an assistant, knows recruiting, is a good teacher, and knows DIII, ODAC, and USASouth.

Personally I'd like to see a coach with plenty of recruiting experience, and yes, that "it" that a guy like Chad Warner had that made him an incredible recruiter. Remember, the ODAC is much different now than it was when Shaver was in his prime in the 90s. At that time, most ODAC coaches really did not recruit, and Hampden-Sydney and Randolph-Macon, the two teams that did recruit the most, were obviously on top.

The ODAC of today has terrific coaches from top to bottom that are all pretty skilled recruiters, so in order to keep pace, Hampden-Sydney definitely, in my opinion, needs someone that can bring in quality talent year in and year out.

Let me clarify; by no means am I taking away from Shaver's ability to recruit and coach. I am just making the point that the competition for kids in those days was nowhere near as heated as it is now.
