Greensboro, N.C. (4/28/08) - Guilford College senior Ben Strong concluded play at the 2008 Collegiate Basketball Invitational Tournament Friday. Strong averaged 12.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per game in three contests for the MBM Logistechs squad that placed sixth in the eight-team tournament.

Ben StrongStrong was one of 64 college seniors from the NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and the NAIA levels selected for the event held April 24-26 in Wadsworth, Ohio. Eight teams of eight players each played three games in two days at Wadsworth High School. An all-star team was chosen from the participants, and the all-star game was televised live April 26 on ESPNU. Strong was not selected to an all-star team. In 2007, 18 of the 20 all-stars were offered professional contracts.

One of seven Division III students in the field, Strong shot a team-best 55.6 percent from the floor and averaged 2.3 assists and 1.7 blocks over three games. He ranked fourth in the tournament in blocks per game and 28th in points per game. After scoring two points in MBM Logistechs' opening-round 95-78 loss to tourney runner-up Louis Perry & Associates, he bounced back with 14 points and eight boards in his team's 96-87 victory over Wadsworth-Rittman. Strong netted a team-high 21 points on nine-of-11 shooting from the floor in MBM Logistechs' 125-99 loss to Renacci-Doraty Chevrolet in the fifth-place game. He added five rebounds and three assists in the contest.

A two-time first-team All-American and Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Player of the Year, Strong concluded his Guilford career in March ranked second in school history with 2,241 points. He helped coach Tom Palombo's club to the 2007-08 ODAC regular-season and tournament titles as well as NCAA Division III Tournament appearances in 2007 and 2008.

I'm a little late to the conversation, but it should be rememebered not only the range of quality in DI teams, but also the range of quality in players on those DI teams.  It's possible for a DIII reserve to serve the same role on a high quality DI program.  Just look at Surry Wood.  He spent two years at H-SC where he rarely left the bench; he then transferred to UNC where he served the same role, but on a team that even H-SC fans have to admit is better than any Tiger squad to ever hit the floor at Fleet.

It's all relative.

I agree with most of your post, as Rice's teammates did defer to him alot, while Short had to do everything for his team.  But the one thing I disagree with is where you said he was an excellent point guard that could score a LIL?  Any player that averages 28.9 ppg is an EXCELLENT scorer, especially when you have to play Rice twice a year.  I believe if he was a few inches taller, he would be in the ACC just like Rice, as he is just a good a scorer and a better defender. 29 ppg is amazing.

odacfan1225

including one 41 point game against Rice himself.   and the other player you were talking about was tyree evans , another amazing player who was about to go to maryland, but things prevented that.

osnapitsodac

uve done ur reseach i stand corrected i shulda known goin 2 bird an everything and last i heard tyree was going 2 maryland wat happened any details i know hes been a lil troubled the past couple of years

osnapitsodac

I will have 2 say sumthin though playin rice and scoring on him shuld not have been a problem rice defenseivly on a good day in high school days would give u bout 50 percent though usallly hed prolly already have 35 pts on the board and the late great coach Cave jus let em play

Osnapitsodac - Would you mind posting in at English please and try to condense your comments so its not like your having convos with urself....thanks.

Justin Short is a very good player but he is way too undersized to ever be a high scorer (over 20 a game), in the ODAC on a Championship winning team. He could do it if he was the #1 option but the pg shouldn't be your #1option for scoring.
