Brent definitely showed plenty of potential last year...going for 20 in one game and knocking down 48% of his three-point attempts. Hopefully over the summer, however, he has added some weight and worked on his left hand and defense. Although he was decently successful his first season, teams in the ODAC learn personnel fast, and the key to any player's success in this league is how they progress from year to year. Brent is a hard working kid and I am sure that he improved in the areas that needed improvement.

If so, the Tigers will have not only a good point guard, but a potent scorer backing up Byron Lawton.

Malcolm Nelson went to Trinity Episcopal in Richmond and had an excellent senior season after coming back from an ankle injury that sidelined him for much of his junior high school and AAU season, which kept him under the radar. His brother, Marcus, was recruited by a few ODAC schools, but wound up at Army where he plays now.

Malcolm is a big, athletic point (about 6-0 and pretty strong) who is super at making the guys around him better. The scary part about him is that he doesn't need to score in order to have a great impact on a game. He's a long defender with quick hands and offensively, finds ways to get teammates the ball in situations where they can succeed. His outside shot may be inconsistent, but that's what the preseason is for.

Look for Malcolm to be a force at some point in his freshman season and an immediate impact player for Randolph. They can really build around this kid.

Thanks for the info man I apperciate it

No one has mentioned david carlson of rmc..i know he has major attitude problems and was even kicked off the team late last year due to grades, but last I heard he was on track to return to the jackets for his sr. yr.  One could argue that he is rmc's best player, right up their with short.  Just curious if anyone has heard anything regarding his return or did he leave the school or??

I do however think that a david carlson-less rmc team is a much better team.  I think he disrupts their chemistry and brings both an on the court and off the court distraction to rmc that they don't need.  I think rhodes will think long and hard before adding him back to the roster.  He also demands the ball a lot which took it away from their play-maker in jordan brown.  I don't think brown would have had near the 2nd half of the season he did if carlson was still their.

its been a long time since Hsc has had a point guard that can score Mr.Gregory was an excellent ball handler and defender but really had troubles scoring with his jump shot.If A.J Dowell would have stayed at HSC that would have been the exception but it is what it is.

Fox & Odom are the last point guards that I can remember that could score.
Gregory was great though, a stopper on defense and the best ball handler I've seen up there.

The point guard that followed, Dunn, could score but he ended up quitting the team half way through his senior year; walked off the court during the RMC and never came back !!!!

I might be wrong, but I thought Jeff Monroe, if he didn't go to H-SC, was more inclined to go to a Patriot League team that offered him a nice financial aid package than walk on at NC State.  H-SC was fortunate that he was little banged up in the knees about the time he came to campus.

Since you guys are talking about Short, Rice, Evans, etc., it might interest you that another good Chesterfield County pg of that same era is supposed to be transferring to EMU:  DJ Short from Clover Hill.  Similar to Ben Jessee in that both were excellent soccer players in addition to basketball.  Last I heard, DJ is transferring from D2 Queens.

ODACHOOPS

AJ Dowell isnt a natural pg..he is one heck of a player that hsc im sure would have loved to of had for the past 3 yrs but he was best spotting up on the wing and being able to attack from the outside..

great teams don't want their pg's to be "scoring pg"..thats not a receipt for success in most cases..

tigerfanalso

I don't know about great teams not wanting the pg to score;
Phil Ford, Magic, Isiah Thomas and others come to mine; all great pgs, all scored a lot and all played on great teams, so I'm not sure I can agree that great teams don't want the pg to score.

I remember that game when gunn walked off.He always had an attitude to him like he thought he was to talented to be on that team which was untrue Guill should have been starting from the start of the season that year.I personally did not think he was a scorer he certanly took alot of shots.Byron showed flashes of being a good scorer his freshman year with limited time but hasnt really progressed. What byron brings everybody knows excellent leadership and very few turnovers and thats all you can ask,but if youur point guard also can take over a game but is your 2nd or 3rd option then you usaully win alot of games.I think Rmc had that last year with dixon and earlier with carlson and when he had his troubles saw short explode and take games over.I rambled again im sorry haha

osnapitsodac

I was talking about gunn taking alot of shots not guill or lawton

one more thing a very reliable source at Hsc told me that he expects coach Vick to get atleast one more recuit just speculation though so dont hold it against me.

osnapitsodac

yea im pretty happy with the point guard being a scorer as long as he leads the team also.extension of the coach rite the floor general haha

Man, it is hard to keep up with this board.  Since they have blocked D3boards at work, I cannot check the site as often and the posts are adding up.  I wanted to chime in on the point guard issue.  I agree that you don't want your point guard to be your #1 scorer because he should be the one making plays and expending energy handling the ball; however, the point guard must be able to score and keep teams honest.  If the point guard is unwilling or unable to shoot outside shots in the half court, it makes it much more difficult to establish a post game.  I think that is one thing that hurt HSC last year.  Other teams were daring players other than King and Prehmus to make outside shots and trying to shut down Kaase and Company on the interior.  In the games where Lawton, Dillard, Matthews, etc. shot well, HSC was usually in the game.  It will be interesting to see what Vick does with the team and what types of shots they get.  The last few years, I have felt that HSC's offense has been stagnant and too reliant upon 2 or 3 scorers.  Only time will tell if this trend continues.

Welcome to all of the new posters and hope all of you "old guys" (I'll use quotes since it was mentioned earlier) are doing well!

Very interesting about DJ Short, I am assuming that he is going to play basketball for EMU?  DJ was a very good high school player.  Not quite on the leven of the other Short (RMC), but very solid and will be a good player in the ODAC.  They also had quite a few big games in highschool including one triple OT game that saw Justin Short scoring 46 points.
