VWC knocks off Methodist 88-77 this afternoon.  The Marlins were led by McDuffie (24 points, 9 rebounds) and Fields (17 points, 5 assists).  McDuffie finished 9/11 from the floor.  It looks like the Marlins played without Dixon and Meredith, so I'm not sure who handled the point for them today.

All - It's a rainy, miserable fall day here in Williamsport, Maryland so I thought I'd perk things up a bit by asking Nova for a season beginning pice of verse to get us off on the right foot. Everything starts in earnest pretty soon and I'm looking forward to watching VWC's six All Americans throughout the season. Good luck everyone! ;D

Let's tip-off the ODAC - hey, throw it!
Eleven will win it - they know it!
Ton Ton waving to fans - oh, bye-bye!
Ben been raving to fans - oh, my my!
When asked "Who'll win it next?", play poet!

#10 ran the point, for the most part

vwc is VERY talented...mcduffie is an absolute BEAST...he could be REALLY, REALLY good for vwc - they seemed pretty deep and with fields and mcduffie, have a nice inside/outside combo - if this team gels, they'll be a force...for a long time - i'm sure they'll have some ups and downs this season because of the youth, but there is no shortage of talent

This may be one of VWC's deepest teams in the last 2 or 3 years.... #10 for VWC is Travis Meyers... he is a pretty dangerous scorer also.

EMU defeats Greensboro tonight 76-73
DJ Hinson 22pts
Todd Phillips 11pts 12 rebs
Orie Poncione played well too I think he had 10pts and 8 rebs.
EMU didn't shoot it that well, but managed to win. Looks to be an exciting year for the Royals.
Averett tomorrow at 4pm

it's only one game, but he clearly looked like a scoring point guard, today, rather than a pass-first guy

looking at the box, vwc didn't have a lot of guys play a lot of minutes (3 bench players played double digit minutes and only 4 bench players played), but there wasn't much of a drop-off when those guys were in the game at all...

Hey, narch.  I can't make the trip to MU tomorrow.  If you go to the game, perhaps you can post a recap and give me your thoughts on the 2008-09 Quakers.  Not sure how much playing time they'll get, but I'm interested in this year's freshmen ... Stafford, Monroe, High, Lowder, et. al.  Looks like there's also a JV game at 12:30.  Thanks!

H-SC drops a tough one at Fleet to a talented Voorhees team, 50-49 on bucket with :06 remaining. It was a difficult day for Tiger fans across the board, with the football team coming up short and then the hoops team suffering a heart-breaker.

I tell you what though, talk about a new look group. This team defends, and defends well. Held Voorhees to 39% shooting and outrebounded a much more athletic team 34-28. Voorhees reminded me of VWC with INCREDIBLY quick and athletic guards and versatile big men that could step out, knock down perimeter jumpers and handle a bit. H-SC plays, not so surprisingly, just like W&M from a year ago on the defensive end, with the ability to get stops and rebound well against teams that are much mroe athletic (as they did to Longwood and as W&M did in their tourney run against ODU and VCU).

35% shooting and 21 turnovers did in the Tigers, however in the end. H-SC was also 4-18 from three and 8-17 from the FT line in the second half!

Once H-SC gets the offensive system down, this team could really challenge for that No. 2 spot, IMO. But until then, I think the preseason coaches poll predictions are about right.

Turner King looked outstanding with 23 of the team's 49 points on 8/12 from the field, including 4/5 from three. Transfers Shane Payne and Jon Mudd were also impressive...Payne had 8 and 6 in about 20 minutes. I think once Mudd decides to be a bit more aggressive with his shot, it will add another dimension. He got to the rim at will (7 FTA) but only took four shots in the run of play (he passed up a good bit of opportunities in the lane on kick outs which led to his three assists). Mudd is certainly one of the top 3 or 4 athletes in the league.

But, in the end, a loss is a loss...although I was very pleased with the defensive intensity. Coach Vick and this team have a lot of upside and it will be interesting to gauge once ODAC play starts!

Good grief, Guilford knocked off Methodist 81-55, led by Henson with 21 with 6 assists, and Sanborn with 18 and 12 boards.  George Neville nearly hit a double-double also, and Bonner and Lowder were in double figures.  Freshman Lowder can play all right.

i gree that the transfers for HSC are tremendously good players I believe that HSC will be welloff in mudds hands down the stretch. Shane Payne is the typical walkon he hustles he does the dirty stuff you always like a guy that will run in the stands for a ball I think he got a bogus technical call in the second half this team will come together.

I just posted this on the USAS site:

"Wow!  I just got home and checked the Guilford at Methodist score.  I was certainly hoping for a Guilford win, but didn't expect a 26 point margin with the Quakers besting the Monarchs, 81-55.  I just scanned through the boxscore and play-by-play and saw GC led by as many as 31, with MU scoring the last 5 points.

With 21 points versus both Davidson and Methodist, Clay Henson may be poised to be an all-ODAC performer.  Sanborn also continues to play well, especially on the boards.  I look forward to watching the Quakers for the first time this season when Greensboro visits Ragan-Brown on Wednesday night."

It's too early to tell, of course, but I think the Quakers may be a serious force in the ODAC this season.  I admire Coach Palombo for testing his teams against bigger foes early in the season (topping Elon at EU in '06, playing at South Carolina in '07 and traveling to Davidson two days ago).  He seems to be quietly building a sustainable winning program.
