Virginia Wesleyan knocked off Salisbury 68-47 in the Fish Tank..... Marlins were led in scoring by Fields with 19 and freshman McDuffie with 16. They are now 2-0 but have yet to put together a dominant game. In the win over Methodist, they were on fire offensively but didn't really play and D and tonight they were cold offensively early in the game, but held Salisbury to less than 20 points in the first half. I think once this young team comes together they will be a team that no one will enjoy playing, except for Randolph Macon lol.

I'll get my first look at the 2008-09 Quakers tonight when the Greensboro Pride visit Ragan-Brown at 7 pm.  The Quakers were upset last season at Greensboro's Hanes Gym in one of the most rowdy and intense games I've attended in some time.  Even though we lost, I'm glad I was there - it was fun.  Ragan-Brown is a bigger, less intimate site, but I sure hope the fans from both teams turn out well again tonight.  I'm so glad the ADs stopped playing this annual game in the cavernous Greensboro Coliseum and returned it to the campus venues.

With Strong, Kimbrough and Belkoski graduated, it'll be a new look for the Quakers.   They performed well against Davidson and Methodist, so I think we'll be a solid team again this year.  Go Quakers!

DeWayne - why didn't Dixon play in the first game? He was a real contributor last night.

Heck, let's make it three questions in a row for DeWayne...what's the deal with Meredith?

1. Violation of team rules, but he's back now
2. Carlton was focusing on his academics but he will be back soon.
3. Meredith suffered an eye injury in a preseason scrimmage against Elizabeth City, but he too, should be
    back soon.

Final Guilford 77, Greensboro 56

The lead traded hands a few times early, but the final close score was 13 all.  Guilford then went on an 8-0 run to take a 21-13 lead and was never seriously threatened after that.  It was 36-23 Quakers at the half and the margin was consistently in the 16-25 point range in the second.  I haven't seen a box score, but Sanborn scored, rebounded and blocked well (I think he had at least 5).  Henson, Neville and Bonner were all in double figures - I think Bonner had 21.  Smith and McDuffie led the Pride.   I don't know the exact numbers, but I'm confident Guilford's shooting percentage was around 10% better than Greensboro's.

Quakers are now 2-0 (Davidson game was an exhibition for Guilford) and the Pride fall to 0-3.  It's a very good start for Guilford before they head to Dallas for two games this weekend.

Thanks for the report, Hasanova.  Great to hear about the Quakers.  Stats are up, Bonner had a hot hand in the shooting, and he greatly improved his ball handling.  Sanborn had 13 rebounds, and Neville had a really good game too.  Cool team this year!

And EMU is continuing the ODAC tradition of whooping up on the USAC.  ;0)

You're welcome, sludge.  Yes, I think they are are good team ... different from what we've seen the past 3-4 years, but good nonetheless.  Are you on your trip or is that still to come?

I didn't find anything in the Daily News Record, but here is a writeup on the EMU-SU game.

badcall!

Congrats to EMU on their fast start, but lets look at whom we have beaten.  Shenandoah and Greensboro will not win many games unless they play each other a lot!  I am a Valley ref and have close ties to EMU and BC, but I must clear up some things?  As much as I like Coach Dean's program he often tends to look toward self pity.  It is a KNOWN fact that EMU has far better minority packaging than any other ODAC school, plus they have several players on their squad that could not qualify for admission at other ODAC schools! So, while I will always root for EMU lets keep the facts straight....it is a much better situation than what Tom Baker had! The previous teams of  Coach Leatherman were as much or more uptempo than the present team!  I believe that the squad left by Leatherman/Weller (who got a raw deal)/& Simmers will give Coach Burgess a nice opportunity to have a good season.  Some great scheduling (by the previous staff) gives them an excellent chance to have 8 or so wins by the end of the first semester.  Go Eagles!!!   BUT, EMU & BC must remind themselves that this is not yet the ODAC!!!!

There is no self pity on Dean's part what-so-ever,HE HAS CAMPAIGNED TO GET $ TOWARDS AN ASSISTANT AND RECRUITING, TO TRY TO EVEN THE PLAYING FIELD, B/C EMU LACKS SO FAR BEHIND OTHER SCHOOLS IN THE ODAC AS FAR AS FINANCIAL RESOURCES. AN EXAMPLE OF THIS IS EMU'S RECRUITING BUDGET OF $1,500 VS. BC'S $20,000+. EMU has no full time assistant, no recruiting budget, and these are the facts, not self pity. Its about being on the same level as the other team's in the ODAC. Yet again that statement about minority packaging is completely false. There is a minority grant,(OPEN TO ALL MINORITIES AT EMU, NOT JUST BASKETBALL PLAYERS) but you must have good grades and be HIGH NEED to qualify for that grant. That grant still doesn't close the gaps of the other schools in the ODAC and put EMU on a level playing field. THAT GRANT HAS BEEN THERE 15YRS, NO DIFFERENT THAN BAKER'S TENURE. The problem with that grant is not many people qualify for it. The Academic standard at EMU is HIGHER. SAT REQUIRMENT IS 920!! At least half of the other schools in the ODAC are accepting students with less than a 920.
I'VE NEVER SEEN LEATHERMAN RUN A FAST PACE OFFENSE, HE HAS ALWAYS RUN A HALF COURT SET OFFENSE, FLEX OFFENSE.. NOW COACH BURGESS RUNS AN UPTEMPO SYSTEM THERE, TOTALLY DIFFERENT THAN LEATHERMAN.
YOU OBVIOUSLY HAVE MORE TIES TO BC THAN EMU B/C YOU DON'T HAVE A GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF THE WHOLE PICTURE.
GO EMU!!!!
RESPECTLY,
MIKE CULEN
