Who are the many good shooters on the HSC roster expected to turn it around?
Should be interesting game between VWC and Maryville.  Perhaps a good comparison gauge insofar as HSC and VWC are playing the same teams in the same tournament.

Hey ODACfan4life! Definitely a shocker that VWC goes 0-2 on the weekend. As far as H-SC is concerned, the box score for today's game is a good indicator of the main guys who Tiger fans know are capable of filling it up. I was referring to Paul Matthews (led the ODAC in 3pt% last year) and a couple other lesser known players that Tiger fans may be familiar with (Matt Partsch, Lane Medlin for two). The Tigers shot the lights out today, but still played some good defense and led by 13-16 for the entire second half, save a couple minutes.

ODACfan...although I don't expect H-SC to shoot 60+% every game, they certainly showed what they are capable of in today's win over LaGrange! Shane Payne played well, knocked down 2/3 from three, King 4/5 from deep, Partsch 1/1, Ben Jessee 1/1 and Medlin 1/2...

Don't count your chickens yet,Big Dog.........The R-MC Jackets are yet to be tested in your conference.....No Brag...Just fact......Maybe you're the SH-- maybe you're not ....it's still VERY EARLY...and Macedo's testing his kids...NEVER count him out...I've learned that the hard way over the last few yrs....the ODAC is very strong this year.....I hope you don't have 2 eat your words later......only time will tell......

Indeed quite an impressive bounce back by HSC.  Talk about going from famine to feast!

Wins tonight for Roanoke, Bridgewater and W&L.  Lyncburg lost scoring just 35 pts.  Ugh.

odacfan1225

RMC loses tonight by 7 to washington and jefferson b/c of zero bench productivity    justin short with 30                hopefully the jackets use this as motivation and start playing the way they are capable of

I think R-MC going 3-20 from 3 point land was also a significant factor. The bench players were 2-10 overall and 0-6 on 3 pointers. Getting out rebounded 38-29 didn't help either.

3sdown

Wasn't at the RMC game, but basically this game appears to be wrapped up in a couple of issues for RMC:

1.  The old saying "You live by the 3 pointer and then you die by the 3 pointer."  3-20 from the arc.  Specifically, 3-16 in the 2nd half.
2.  A poor defensive effort by the Yellow Jackets (or a great shooting night by Washington & Jefferson).  47% from the field for Washington & Jefferson.  62.5% (5-8) from the arc for Washington & Jefferson.  Sounds like a combination of poor defense and good offense.
3.  Getting out rebounded 38-29.  Not good given the size of RMC.

So as stated by another poster...RMC needs to do a reality check and begin to play the way they are capable...Plenty of games going forward but not the start RMC was supposed to undertake.  Everyone was expecting a 2-0 start especially after Wooster went down in the 1st Round of the Tournament.

The Quakers suffered their first loss of the season last night, losing to home-standing UT-Dallas, 64-48.  Guilford led at the half 27-26, but got smoked by 17 in the second.  I wasn't able to listen to the game, but it looks as though the undefeated Comets went on a tear while Guilford went cold.  Henson led Guilford with 18 and Sanborn added 13 points plus a career-high 16 rebounds.  UT-Dallas, picked to finish 2nd in the ASC, improved to 3-0 while Guilford returns to NC at 3-1.

Hello 'nova,

I went to the UT-Dallas Guilford game.

I posted my comments on the ASC board.

Apparently UT-D posed defensive challenges that took Guilford out of its game.  On the other end, UTD would slow down the offense to take the shot in the last 4-6 seconds of the possession.  Temaine Wright, a typical athletic ASC-style point guard, was able to drive and slash.  Wright was 9-15 on FG's and 6-7 from the line, 4 assists, 2 turnovers and 6 steals.

To my eyes, it was a typical UTD game, except that the referees swallowed their whistles and let them play.

UT-Dallas is picked to finish 2nd to Mississippi College in the ASC-East.  (UT-Tyler, whom Guilford beat 75-66, is picked 3rd.)

;)  In inter-divisional play, we will see which is better, ASC-East or ASC-West.

Let's not forget that W & J beat two pre-season top 25 teams in Wooster and R-MC. This has to say as much about W & J as it does about the opposition. W & J got no pre-season top 25 votes, but if they don't make it to the top 25 in the next poll they should certainly be near the top in the "others receiving votes".

Does anyone know what happened with Eastern Mennonite today? I had to refresh the ODAC page to make sure I saw that Ferrum score correctly...

Hey, Ralph.  Thanks for your eyewitness report, which I just read on the ASC page.  When I looked at the boxscore, I saw what a huge game Wright had.    Thanks for the distinction on the ASC East and West preseason picks ... I knew I hadn't been quite descriptive enough, but got lazy and didn't go back to edit.  :)  It's always interesting to see how you stack up against teams from other regions, so I applaud GC Coach Palombo for scheduling the trip ... it can only help in the long run.  We defeated UT-Tyler, of course, and it sounds as though we actually had a 5-point lead on UT-Dallas with about 16 minutes to go.  It's a 40 minute game, however, so that's that.  All in all, I'm relatively pleased with the trip as we adjust to life AB (after Ben).  lol  Thanks again.

Evening 'nova!

I think that Guilford may benefit from UT-Dallas' and UT-Tyler's OWP's.

I can project UT-Dallas going 5-3 versus the ASC-West.  They have road games versus McMurry and Hardin-Simmons (Abilene is a tough place to play.)  and at UMHB (the CRU have a brand new gym) next Saturday after the Wesley UMHB football games and then onto Concordia-TX.

Concordia can run with anyone in the country, so they may be able to take UT-Dallas out of their game.

UT-Dallas will probably go 8-4 versus the ASC East.  That gives them a conference record of 13-7. If they lose in the conference tourney semifinals, that makes 14-8.  Two wins versus Austin College makes an in-region record for OWP sake of 16-8.

As for UT-Tyler, the Patriots catch McMurry and HSU at home, plus Sul Ross State and HPU at home. (I wonder if HSU is as strong as last year!)   Road games against the West are UMHB, Concordia, Schreiner and Texas Lutheran.  That is a chance at 6-2 versus the West and I think that they go 7-5 versus the East.  If they go 0-1 in the tourney, then the OWP for Guilford's sake is 14-7.

In the football discussions with the Football Selection Committee Chair, Coach (Dr.) Dick Kaiser, he said that 15-18 games begins to give good value in the OWP/OOWP calculations.

I think that Guilford did okay by making this trip.   :)

Thanks again, Ralph.  Your discussion of OWP/OOWP gave me a lot of insight.  I doubt you'd ever seen Guilford play before, but this year's team is drastically different from the last two years (both 24-5).  In 2007, we graduated starters Thomas Burge and Jordan Snipes and, in 2008, we lost the remaining three:  Ben Strong, Eric Belkoski and Caleb Kimbrough.  Strong and Kimbrough, respectively, are now playing professionally for the Haifa (Israel) Heat and the Washington Generals (Globetrotters' opponent).

Guilford was picked third (of 11) in the ODAC preseason and I think that's probably about right.  RMC and VWC both slipped some over the weekend, but I expect them to be very strong in conference play.  Our starters are still, in my opinion, a work in progress.  Sanborn and Henson started last season, so they were obvious choices.  Neville, now a senior, started about 7-8 games as a freshman, but has been the Paul Silas-type sixth man forward ever since (remember him from the old Boston Celtics?)  Bonner came in mid-season from Presbyterian, so he's the logical choice at the point.  It appears, however, that Senior Mat Stanley is being rewarded for being a senior and his perseverance (which I applaud), so I'm unsure whether Coach Palombo plans to keep him as a starter or if he's just waiting until the underclassmen get some more college game experience.

This is true.  However, at this point it tells me a whole lot more about RMC.  RMC was expected to go in and win this tournament and they did not for a variety of reasons I have stated on this board in regards to the W&J game.  Yes, W&J is better than everyone thought (as indicated by their lack of a national ranking), but by default this means everyone thought RMC was better than they are apparently.  Just my thoughts...
