Amherst beats a game Bowdoin in LeFrak tonight 80-70.  Amherst largest lead was 13 but the Bears kept coming back by making 3's and layups by Swords....yes, unguarded and with good passes, he even dunked without leaving his feet....scoring 6 points total.  Bowdoin had  three players in double figures while Amherst had 6 players. Big Pete led with 19 points and led in rebounds with 7.  Amherst won the battle of big men and the boards but was outshot from outside.....still shot 50% from the field.  Williamson started and scored the first 6 points as Amherst went up 8-0.  Battle of the PG....Toomey had 3 at the half, I believe with a 3-point shot and Hurley did not score.  Aaron finished with 12, making the last two Amherst points from the foul line.  Hurley left the scoring to Mathias who led the game with 21 or 23....whatever....hitting from outside mostly.
Walzy's spread may have been ok if Green had not missed the front end of an one and one and if Workman had made his two foul shots near the end....Amherst missed three straight foul shots before Toomey's two shots.....as Bowdoin was fouling and hoping for misses and  shooting 3's, etc in the last minute for sure.  The P. Bears went to a full court press at the 2-minute mark with Amherst ahead by 10 or 11.  Amherst defended the 3 point shot and several good passes to Swords underneath and you guessed it....2 easy points.  Better recap and stats will be posted on the website at Amherst.

Maine-Man

Good win by Amherst tonight. Typical game for Bowdoin when they play against top-tier teams as they kept it within 10 pts, but still lose. The truth is Amherst was in control of the game from start to finish and you never got a sense that Bowdin was capable of beating them.

Bucket

Middlebury has no trouble with Hamilton, hounding the Continentals defensively all night, and running away with a 66-47 win.

Midd jumped out to a 14-3 lead, and while Hamilton actually brought it within 6 early in the second half, the outcome never felt in doubt. Middlebury simply shrugged off the slow second half start, jumped back in front by double digits and never looked back.

Hamilton shot just 35 percent from the field and had to work extremely hard to get even decent looks/shots. They also turned the ball over 16 times. Matt Hart really had to work against Nolan Thompson; he still made some really tough shots and finished with 14.

Speaking of Thompson, he had a game-high 21 (8-11 from the field), and with his first triple of the night, Nolan reached the 1,000-point mark for his career.

Jake Wolfin was more than solid: 8 assists, 8 points. Jack Roberts has really picked up his game defensively: 4 blocks, 7 boards. Merryman and Lynch with 10 a piece, though Peter had an uncharacteristically poor shooting night. Joey Kizel was quiet: 9 pts, a couple of assists, a couple of steals.

Good solid win for Midd. On to Williams next weekend.

Old Guy

Bucket covered the Midd-Hamilton game. I thought it was somewhat more contested than he. When Hamilton came within five in the 2nd half, I paced (my seatmates actually socialize during games - they have no sense of proportion: these games are serious).

I liked watching Joseph Lin. He has some game, plays at the point, is clever with the ball. He's really slight of build (5'11. 135). When he was on Nolan, he was posted up for an easy bucket - and was taken out. He had a nice hoop, up-fake, dribble, and a 15-18' shot. He played 13 minutes.

What a joy it has been watching Nolan Thompson play for four years. He had 18 on the Middlebury webpage box score - and 21 in the box score on the NESCAC webpage, so he had either 21 or 18. He guarded Matt Hart, and I think disrupted his shot. Hart hit two long threes in the 1st half. He has a really nice stroke. A frosh, he'll be heard from.

Williams next Saturday will be a real test. The Ephs have the last two years to avenge (more, really: I'm thinking of Midd winning the NESCAC championship two years ago in Chandler, and knocking them off last year in the NESCAC tourney). A one-sided win would lend credence to the relative strength of schedule argument. Think the Ephs will be ready, in their gym? I'll probably go with Young Guy and his h.s. pals, but it will be an emotional workout.

Old Guy

Love to get a report on the Tufts-Wes 77-75 game. The Cards have played well and don't have much to show for it. Who wants them in the tourney? Bates took care of business at home against CC. Vadas was 4-16. Bowdoin played pretty well against the Jeffs to stay with 10, no? Is Colby any good? They routed Trinity in Hartford (43-15 at the half: game over).

Old Guy......Amherst meets Williams first on Wednesday in the game that does not count in the conference standings.  Both games last year were wins by Amherst by 2 points, I believe.  See what I can do to soften the Ephs for the Sat. contest....just kidding here guys.
Side Note:....Matt Mathias is a Bowdoin guard that scored 22 points tonight....got the number from the box...going 5-6 from the arc....as they say these days. He is a 6'1" player, a junior that only started this year, I believe.  He normally is not a big scorer....checked the last few games.  Mathias is from Baltimore, Md.  I met him and his parents at a December game  three years ago....when he was in HS.  Amherst was playing Stevenson in their old gym on the Stevenson campus outside Baltimore.  One if not both of his parents are Amherst grads.  They stopped to talk to Coach Hixon after the game.  Tonight he was unstoppable in the first half...was in the game for 33 minutes.

Walzy, I love Midd (which despite the injuries I think is due for a big home win over an outmatched opponent) and the over.  I also love Tufts.

The rest of them are tougher, but Ill say under in Wes/Tufts, Colby and the over, Bowdoin with a late garbage time cover and the over, Conn and the under.

1-1 and a push on the first line of picks.

4-2 on the next line.

5-3 total up 1.7
