senator,
from the williams website-  matt hunt was named all-american in 1999.  that alone, should tell you he was more than just a rangy shooter.....

fisheralum03

nice one Auerbach, i'm sure I could find my way around "your" town.

I'm not sure which all-america list he's on, because he's absent from all of the d3hoops.com lists.

i believe that all-american status is"officially" designated by the nabc, but i could be wrong.  in 1999, d3hoops.com was in its infancy, and their recognition was unofficial. (seven years ago seems like only yesterday to me.....)

Ryan Scott (Hoops Fan)

Right, I am aware of that, but if he couldn't crack any of d3hoops.com's four lists, that doesn't bode well for national recognition.  You kinda made it seem like he was on the first team, but that's doubtful if d3hoops.com didn't recognize him at all.  I was just making a comment, I really have no opinion one way or another.

You do have to take into account the fact that Gerry McNamarra has used up all the good favor the basketball gods have allocated for teams from Upstate New York the past two days.  There may not be any left to fuel a Utica victory.

Sorry, Hoops Fan, but it's spelled McNamara and since Utica is the Syracuse sister college.. his luck will hopefully rub off onto us.

To answer fisheralum's question, it looks like they're selling 1400 tickets for the games this weekend.  I wouldn't be surprised if tonight's games sell out because of four teams participating and high interest around here, but I'm not positive about tomorrow night's game.  It DEFINITELY won't sell out if Amherst isn't involved, and even if the Jeffs win tonight you'll probably be able to get tickets right at 7:00.

I only put one 'r' in it; I'm not sure what happened with the quote.

Have they been selling tickets for tomorrow yet or are they going to wait until after the games tonight?  If they have been selling them already, you should be able to get plenty of tickets off fans of the losing teams.

Utica over Fisher 81-76

I don't care what HAS happend this year, it tourney Time and Utica Dominated a WPI team that everyone had ranked really high.

But the three times Fisher has handled Utica is trumped by one win over WPI, a team that was relatively unfamiliar with the Pioneers? Fisher has Utica's number, I'd be extremely surprised if Utica pulls the upset. I'm not saying Utica would beat Tufts or Amherst, but I think their style of play is better when they are playing teams that haven't seen Utica before. Fisher knows how to beat them and, frankly, the last two games have been boat races. As in, have you ever seen a close boat race?

Based on yesterday, maybe this is just a weekend for Upstate NY teams to knock off a dominant New England team? ;D

I can't believe UConn actually let McNamara even take a 3-pointer. They should have tackled him as soon as he caught the ball.

It was destiny.  Even if they fouled him, he would have hit both free throws and then somehow got the ball back for a game winner.  He's the most clutch player I've seen since Reggie Miller; they even have that same, solid skills until it matters when they jump ten levels of talent to win the game thing going on.

Hoops Fan has just made me like him by name dropping Reggie Miller. Reggie is a legend. Say what you want to say about Bird and Jordan, Reggie was the best come crunch time (keep the ring comments to yourselves).

Reggie Miller

It's true in terms of the amount he raised his game when it mattered as opposed to how he played when it didn't, Reggie can't be topped.  Michael Jordan was always great, in every game he played, he was at his best, but Reggie would just hum along at cruising speed until he was needed and then bust out for 8 points in 13 seconds, which is much more frustrating and demoralizing.

I agree about McNamara. However, UConn's gotta play better than that and I still think Rudy Gay is the most overhyped player in College Hoops that I can remember. If you were having a pick-up game and you could pick any guys in college basketball you wanted, would Gay even be in that 5-on-5 game?? I don't think he would.

hoops fan,
just to set the record straight- in 1999, matt hunt was first team all-nescac.  mike shantz from hamilton was the nescac player of the year.  hunt was named honorable mention all-america by the basketball news, which picked 5 for its first team and named 15 honorable mentions.  unfortunately, i couldn't retrieve the names of the other players selected, but got the story from the archives on the williams site.   it "bodes" well for hunt that basketball news, at the time, believed he was one of the 20 best players in the country.  maybe d3hoops thought he was the 21st best player.....
