whoa, Mussachia just announced as starter in place of Green for Jeffs. Hope that's strategy, not injury....

(Inside info welcome.)

AncientSonOfHixon

damn, announcers just said Green out, ankle injury, happened midweek.

Va Wes has played at Williams twice in the last few years at Williams, in the NCAAs, and they bussed both times. It must be that the NCAA has better maps!

Yeah, it seemed off, but the new google maps took away the "shortest distance" option, so I had to guess.

Good thing there's a shot clock because otherwise I'd advise York to go into the 4 corner stall with the 6-5 lead.  Holy cow they are having a hard time making shots but I'm sure Toomey will be heating up shortly seeing that his team needs his offense even more with Green out.

Amherst looks pretty lost in the first half so far.  Long, long way to go.

AncientSonOfHixon

Jeffs down 23-21 at half, and it could be a lot worse. That's as ugly a 20 minutes as we've seen this year. Horrible shooting from everywhere, and 9 turnovers, most of them self-inflicted including some particular weak plays by Toomey and Killian.

Jeffs will shoot better in 2nd, but so will York. York's doing a good job playing close on the perimeter, and Jeffs can't threaten them inside.

Gonna need some serious Toomey in this one. He's had good looks in 1st, but they haven't gone down. . . .

That's gotta be the first time in years Amherst has been held to under 25 in first half. I feel like every score I see of theirs, they are in high 80's or 90's

If Amherst was facing the two guys from Mitchell I'd say they were in trouble.  However, despite their offensive problems in the 1st half York doesn't have much of an offensive game unless they get steals.  Woods has already put up 15 shots, only making 4 of them.  Have to believe Hixon will make sure the LJs get some good looks to start the 2nd half and get the blood flowing a little bit.  This is a game where Pollack is missed a lot more than Green.  If he was there to give Amherst a post presence I don't think they would be struggling quite as much to put points on the board.

Last night we got to listen to Jack Healey, one of the best announcers in New England for decades.
Today's Amherst broadcast sounds something like this, "Ok, DK to DG to TK, over to Toomey, back to DK who puts up a three.  DG with the rebound, out to TK who drives and scores.  Great work by DG and TK."
I miss Jack Healey.

14-5 "run" for Jeffs coming out of half. Now up 35-28 at media timeout.

They're able to stay in front of York scorers, which is the difference in light of the shooting debacle. (Toomey 0-6 from 3 so far. Team 5-19.)

Simple difference between a professional and a college kid*. Don't blame the college kid.

(*I don't count PN/Middlebury crew as college kids. They're a different and otherworldly breed.)

Sorry.  Didn't mean to pick on a kid.  I'm a dad.  And a former announcer.

I've seen too much of Amherst and Toomey in recent years to not be sure he'll be sure the LJs win on a day when they played far from their best.

AncientSonOfHixon

No worries, middhoops. I enjoy myself some Jack Healey, too, for sure.

QuoteNot to make anyone mad, but the talk of the night was how Swords could have ever made All-NESCAC. The guy has some moves, but they seemed very, very slow. He was out of position a lot and his footwork was atrocious. He had 8 inches on everyone else and he still managed to get blocked at least twice and routinely outjumped on rebounds.

QuoteI'm not saying he had a bad game, I'm saying it was clear to all of us (I doubt anyone outside the Bowdoin fans and the opposing coaches had actually seen him play) that he plays well below his potential.

Don't think it's a big stretch to interpret your first comments as "he played like crap".  He made the All-NESCAC team by consistently putting up numbers like he did last night.

Regarding his potential...  I'd agrue that you're making the wrong observation.  You're focused on his short comings; not his progression.  Swords development since freshman year has been astounding.  Even last year he played less than 15 minutes a game was in frequent foul trouble and had a very limited offensive contriubtion.  This is a guy who started playing basketball late and is just learning the game.   A lot came together for him this last year and his play has blossomed.  Could his game get better....yes certainly but if I were an opposing coach I would pray that he spent his summer doing something other than learning to hit an 6-8 ft turn around jumper.

Well, Amherst pulls this one out, but without Connor Green, I think we're toast. Depth was a major issue this year and I think losing Green and Pollack would just be too much.
