The front page article announcing the Sweet 16 hosts has a list of Sectional hosts since 2000. The article states that the only year that all 4 hosts advance to the Final Four for the men was 2008 . They show the Sectional hosts that year as Amherst, Ursinus, Hope and Washington U. The article is correct in that they were the teams advancing to the Final Four, however Amherst didn't host a sectional that year. Amherst had to travel to Plattsburgh State, who hosted the sectional. Amherst played Richard Stockton and won in the Sweet 16 game, while Brandeis defeated Plattsburgh in the other Sweet 16 matchup. Amherst then defeated Brandeis the next day to advance to the Final Four. So in reality, since the year 2000, all four sectional hosts for the men, have NEVER advanced to the Final Four. I imagine the article will get corrected as I sent Pat an email. ;)

I'm pretty sure that was the women's list.  I can't remember the last time Ursinus was good enough to host a men's sectional.

That wasn't the women's list it was the men's list and the correction has now been made. The men in charge changed the article and it now reads:  "Since 2000 all four  Sectional hosts have never advanced to the Final Four".  Plattsburgh has been put in as a host in place of Amherst. And the other hosts that year were Ursinus, Hope, and Wash U. That info is correct.  Ursinus had a great year in 2007-008 and they were 27-2 going into the Sectional.  They hosted a Regional and then the Sectional. The other 3 teams sent there for the Sectional were Gettysburg, Coast Guard, and Rochester. Ursinus beat Gettysburg, and Coast Guard beat Rochester. The next day Ursinus defeated Coast Guard to advance to the Final Four. They lost to Amherst 84-58 and then lost the consolation game to Hope 100-86. They ended their season at 29-4.

What was interesting was they beat Gettysburg 4 times that year. Twice in the regular season, once in the conference tournament and once in the NCAA's. You don't see that happen very often. ;D

I was checking this same info while you were writing this post Magicman.  Best it be you who sets the record straight anyway.  Middlebury was 19-8 that season and lost to both Plattsburgh and Ursinus.  That was the Plattsburgh team that came back from a 22 point second half deficit that I've mentioned in previous posts.  The first real wake up call for the Panthers who were very new to basketball success at the time.

In the final 4 in Salem that year.....Amherst PG Olsen had a triple double!  Amherst then lost to WashU in the title game.
Thanks Magicman....could not remember the team Amherst beat in the first game...strange how one's mind works at times....and too lazy to find my program from Salem.

We regret the error. :)

Seriously, though, the reason I spent some time compiling that yesterday is because that info hasn't been captured anywhere that I could find. When I went back through our news and bracket archives, we had referenced occasional success rates but not anything comprehensive. Now we can just carry this chart forward for future years.

I hope very much that Amherst has a chance to beat Williams for a fourth time this year.  Of course, I hope even more fervently that opportunity is not realized ...

Back in 2003-04, Stevens Point and Oshkosh played 4 times and Point won all four... and Oshkosh didn't make the NCAA tournament (2 reg season WIAC games, 1 non-con game out in Vegas, WIAC conf tournament).

Needless to say, we knew Oshkosh VERY well by the end of the year... And apparently they knew us well too. The next year, Oshkosh beat us at their place in the regular season finale and UWSP had to share the conference title with Platteville.

Didn't have to share the national title with 'em though!

Vandy,
The star and architect of that 22 point comeback was Anthony Williams who was our D3hoops All American that year. Anthony came up from the city over the weekend to watch his alma mater in the regional. Travis Gorham our other star player that year was also at the games.  I gently kidded them after the game on Saturday, as we were all celebrating the Cards win... that this year's Cardinal team did something that their edition didn't do and that was to win two games to get to the Sweet 16. In 07-08 we had one of the 1st round byes and then won a game to get to the Sectional that we hosted. I also reminded them that this year we didn't fall 20 points behind the Panthers and have to mount a hellacious comeback to get the win, although this year was our first win against Middlebury since that epic comeback.

Another compelling video by a Middlebury student, a film major and lacrosse player who took my "Negro Leagues" class last year. I'm sure other schools do this kind of thing too, but I was moved by this (less than two minutes).

Matt Lennon played rugby, not lacrosse, OG. He works in the communications office now and produced this vid as Middlebury's contribution to this national effort.

And yes, it's great work.

Pretty darn impressive week for Eph hoops alums Tucker Kain '05 and Brendan McGuire '98 (both of whom were starters on Final Four squads, and both of whom are now BFD's):

Nice little clip about the Colby celebrations was posted on ESPN's Facebook last night. Wish it was actually a full piece on it and not just random clips, but a little bit of fun for those unfamiliar with their antics haha

Finished reading the morning paper and decided to join the morning posters here on a SLOW D3 MBB day.  As I was trying to return to this board from the YouTube  video,  up came the Amherst vs Colby rematch Amherst video.....sort of strange, ironic....when you use a touch screen that one has not mastered.  Remember that in the rematch the Amherst student fans was chanting something at a more quiet Colby bench.  Most of the body movement was performed by the Mules HBC in that game, I recall.

Watched the WBB title game between UCONN and Louiville last night.  Much of the announcers chatter was about the placement of the two teams in the upcoming NCAA Brackets....what is good for the NCAA , fans and TV...etc. for the two possible no. 1 seeds.  One of the key factors, and questions to be be answered is how to avoid a 4th meeting of the two teams...in a sectional.  The Huskies with the win last night has beaten the Cardinals three times.   Sound familiar?

In short...with all the discussions on the D3 boards about post season selections and placements of the teams in regions, I found the D1 discussions somewhat  similar,,funny..and also influenced by Money considerations.  In D3 the money factor is the lack of, while in D1..even WBB...it is to maximize the ratings and therefore revenue.   Just a viewpoint.
