More NESCAC recruiting news:

At Beaver Country Day, head coach Juan Figueroa saw two of his seniors recently commit to high academic schools as Kyle Padmore will move on to Trinity College and Kent Ellerston to Emerson College following the season.

BCD is off to an 11-1 start on the season and has established themselves as one of the favorites in Class B in the process.

Padmore, a 6-foot-4 forward, has been a critical piece of that success. Strong and athletic with a continuously expanding skill set, he made a name for himself on the AAU circuit with Metro Boston and should be a valuable piece for Trinity head coach James Cosgrove for the next four years.

So far this year, Amherst, Williams, Bates and Trinity all seem to have very strong classes coming in.  A bit quieter for the rest of the league, but I'm sure more news is forthcoming.

This might have been mentioned already, but Perry DeLorenzo is headed to Middlebury. He's one of seven (!) Exeter players who will be playing hoops collegiately. DeLorenzo is a local kid, son of the Middlebury field hockey coach.

----

Phillips Exeter Academy senior swingman Perry DeLorenzo is heading to Middlebury College next year where he'll continue his basketball career at the prestigious NESCAC school.

A three-year member of the Exeter squad who won a Class A championship as a sophomore, put up some big numbers as a junior and is one of the team's captains as a senior, DeLorenzo might be best known for his ability to shoot the basketball but provides additional value with his toughness, college ready body and high basketball I.Q.

A Vermont native who starred with Lone Wolf Athletics on the AAU circuit, DeLorenzo was widely recruited by a number of high academic schools before ultimately committing to head coach Jeff Brown and the Panthers.

NESCAC recruits announced so far:

Amherst: Tommy Mobley, 6'3 G, Jack Deutsch, 6'1 G, Stephen Clapp, 6'4 G, Eric Sellew, 6'6 F

Bates: Thomas Coyne, 5'11 G, Nicholas Gilpin, 6'2 G

Colby: Ronan Schwarz, 6'3 G

Middlebury: Perry DeLorenzo, 6'4 G

Trinity: Kyle Padmore, 6'4 F, Joe Bell, 6'0 G

Tufts: Patrick Racy, 6'6 F

Wesleyan: Jack Alberding, 6'6 F, Hallvard Lundevall, 6'4 G/F, Nicholas Gilpin, 6'2 G

Williams: Henry Feinberg, 6'5 G/F, Matt Karpowicz, 6'8 C, Vince Brookins, 6'2 G

A few observations: I can't imagine this class could possibly top the current frosh class, which based on early returns is absolutely loaded with talent, and very deep.  So far, there is a paucity of big men (Karpowicz being the only true big guy in the group), although surely more are to come.  Amherst just keeps reloading with wing talent, Green, Racy, McCarthy, Riopel, and now this group, the beat goes on.  Guys like Magana who might play elsewhere will continue to be stuck on the bench.

Team most desperately in need of a huge recruiting year: Colby, where the cupboard looks pretty bare after this year's seniors leave.  Most of the rest of the league seems to have a lot of young talent waiting to emerge, especially frosh talent.

A VERY early guess as to a few guys who may make impacts early in their careers: Tommy Mobley, Nick Gilpin, Joe Bell, Patrick Racy, Henry Feinberg, Matt Karpowicz

nescac1, could Williams recruit Vince Brookins be the son of Vince Brookins, who played on Iowa's 1980 NCAA Final Four team (coach was Lute Olson, star player was Ronnie Lester, who injured his knee in the tournament)?

nescac1

Nescac24, he is indeed.  Adding to the list of Ephs with interesting hoops pedigrees (along with current frosh Michael Kempton, son of NBA player Tim Kempton).

The real question wrt Amherst...and maybe Williams to a lesser degree....is where will the new players be put?  Amherst has only one senior playing on the floor really now.  The other seniors are not listed on the rosters really.  Guess it will be going back to earlier years where there were 18 players listed and for games 15 were dressed...remember it was done even at Salem....in 07?

nescac1

As of now, Williams loses three seniors, two perimeter players and one center, and is adding (to date) three recruits, two perimeter guys and one center, so it works out pretty nicely.  I do anticipate however that with so many rotation players returning, plus Greenman back from injury, plus three solid recruits all of whom could be in the mix early on, competition for rotation spots will be fierce for Williams next year -- a badly-needed change from the relatively thin rosters typical of recent teams.  Some really good, experienced players will no doubt be riding the pine for the Ephs next year, barring a rash of injuries.

For Amherst, of course, the roster situation is far more clogged, at least in the short term.  Center is beyond loaded next year with George, Conklin, and Schneider all back.  PG will feature two returning seniors with starting experience, Dawson and Berman (although oddly Dawson is listed as a sophomore, but he has only one year of eligibility left).  On the wing there is Racy, McCarthy, Riopel, and Nabatoff returning.  That probably leaves Magana and the incoming frosh wings to compete for the final rotation slot.  And as good as next year's senior class if for Amherst, other than at PG (where Hixon will surely find a star at some point, or maybe Sinopoli will be the guy), the team will just restock with Schneider at center and all the stockpiled wings just sliding in right in for the guys who depart.

And I believe former Notre Dame scoring machine Austin Carr is Kyle Scadlock's uncle.

Guess EPH fans will soon attend games with an autograph book, with all these famous BB relatives! :)
Nescac24....just kidding here.  Austin Carr...another Former Washington D.C. HS Star player.  Played at Mackin HS...that is no longer around.  Believe it was a parochial school.  Ronk maybe of help here.  Played at Notre Dame in the 70's and even played for the Washington NBA for a time.
Will be worried if the Williams players/recruits play as well as their relatives in college...from an Amherst fan perspective...of course ;D.

nescac24

amh63, as a kid I was a big ND fan in all sports, and particularly enamored of Carr's scoring exploits. ND of that era had several players from the DC area, I think. Carr, Adrian Dantley, Sid Catlett, Collis Jones. As far as the Eph connection, if only the DNA game was so predictable. :-)

NESCAC24 - I like everything you said - I was a big Kelly Tripucka fan as a kid!

I gave you a "smite" just for some street cred - there is no "true" NESCAC poster that does not get snarky at times!

Welcome!   :D

Sorry, I'll read more closely.

Our friends at NbN posted some interesting statistics from this season including Lucas Hausman's remarkable 24.8 ppg.  He's a special player and Bowdoin would be in trouble without him.  However, their post made me wonder what makes Hausman so special?  Asked another way - what specifically is it that Hausman does that helps Bowdoin win?

Basketball is an incredibly subtle and complex sport and as the NbN authors point out, the NESCAC lacks the equipment needed to conduct sophisticated statistical analysis.  So I was left with traditional basketball stats.  This means that when looking at any individual player - let alone a single dimension of that player's game - we're not going to find r squared values of 0.9 or anything even close.  However, we should be able to tease out some insights by comparing the relative strength of different correlations.

In order to look at "wins" I used point differential (negative = a loss; positive = a win).  It's not a perfect proxy but a good one.  Then I started evaluating different aspects of Hausman's game. The first place to start is ppg (i.e. Hausman's ppg vs Bowdoin point differential).   The r squared for this was 0.0146 and the correlation - if it exists - is slightly negative.  Even accounting for the limited impact any single stat for a single player could have that seems really insignificant.

Next I wondered if it was Hausman's ability to put the team on his back (e.g.the Bates game earlier this year when Hausman scored 42 points to lead Bowdoin to a win).  Here the correlation was Hausman's total points as a % of Bowdoin's total points vs Bowdoin's point differential.  Again the correlation was small, 0.088, but significantly bigger than the first analysis.  Interestingly this correlation was also negative - meaning the when Hausman accounted for a higher percentage of Bowdoin's total score the less likely it was Bowdoin won - though this is still a weak correlation.

The NbN guy's mentioned Hausman's improved 3 point shooting so I looked at that (i.e. Hausman's 3 pt shooting pct vs Bowdoin point differential).  Again a small correlation, 0.0911, but the correlation was positive.

Hausman is a great foul shooter so I looked at that.  The problem is he is such a great foul shooter that he has only shot below 80% in two games - and unfortunately Bowdoin has lost more than 2 games.  So there's neither correlation nor causality there.

Then I realized how much Hausman likes to drive to the basket and hit mid-range fall away jumpers so I looked at Hausman's 2 pt FG% vs point differential.  Strikingly the r squared jumped to 0.2377.  That's significantly bigger than any other correlation I could find.

Now we shouldn't conclude that 23% of Bowdoin's wins are due to Hausman's scoring efficiency inside the arc - that would be both an overstatement and an oversimplification.  However, it's pretty clear when Hausman scores efficiently inside the arc this is the single thing he does that has the biggest contribution to Polar Bear victories. Conversely if Hausman isn't shooting efficiently inside the arc Bowdoin is a little less likely to win.   (To be clear Hausman does many things that contribute to victories but this one just has the biggest impact on average).

(Note: does anyone know how to add graphs?  The "insert image" button didn't work for me)
