jumpshot, I'd love to say that Amherst was unique or even unusual in regards to this sort of campus cultural issue, but I don't really think it is.  All of Amherst's closest peers (Bowdoin, Midd, Colby and Williams, to name a few) have all had high profile issues -- not precisely the same in tenor, but equally hot-button -- plaguing campus life in recent years.  It's a tricky time to navigate campus life everywhere, and no one is immune.  Let's not cast stones ...

Nescac1...was going to put your post subject into the "basket of Fake News Storties" plaguing today's various media outlets.  It is one of the negative results of today's rage of having a social media "voice".  Just want to post here that Prez of Amherst has sent an e-mail to the Amherst community..alums, students, parents, etc. that she was informed by the AD of the article and has taken steps.  An investigation has started, and the X-Country team is shut down presently.  Expect future steps in the near future.  I will NOT post further on this subject, keeping to the popular phrase"What Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas".

My favorite hoodie is from New Gloucester, ME.  It reads: "What happens here, stays here."  Then in small print: "But nothing ever really happens here." 8-)

Here is a shot at a New England top 10 after the first semester is (just about) over:

1. Amherst -- obviously
2. Babson -- obviously
3. Wesleyan -- the lone New England undefeated after Amherst, with a quality win over Williams and generally winning with ease otherwise.  Are they for real?  Time will tell, but certainly outplaying expectations.
4. Williams -- rebounded from the brutal Wesleyan performance, still a young team (only one senior who plays) that keeps improving -- winning by an average of 16 ppg
5. Middlebury -- they can score it with anyone, but the defense seems up and down
6. Tufts -- the loss to UMass Boston is a cryptic one, but some solid wins on the resume
7. WPI -- Babson should cruise through NEWMAC this year, but WPI will at least make them sweat a few times
8. Endicott -- great road win over Midd, cryptic home loss to Bridgewater
9. Keene -- has cooled down a bit since a scorching-hot start
10. Conn College -- solid W-L record vs. a weak schedule

What's that mean? Tacit approval?

nescac1 - nice post.  With regards to "not casting stones"...I completely agree if you are referring to an attitude of "that would never happen at [insert your favorite NESCAC school]".  However, we should most definitely cast stones regarding this behavior in general.  All young men need a strong and unambiguous message that this type of behavior and the under-lying attitude toward women is not acceptable.

P'bearfan, absolutely and agreed. I was indeed referring to singling out Amherst. If it can happen there, or also notoriously at Harvard, it can happen anywhere.  Alas.

The ability to say everything and have it broadcast is the blessing and curse of social media.  With that things like this are bound to happen.  Good lesson for everyone to learn from.

I think the appropriate expression is "but for the grace of God go I" !!!

Old Guy.....you can think/ conclude whatever... .I will not post here or anywhere on the findings.  When the investigation concludes and any action taken as a result, I will prefer to keep my opinions on the matter private...just that simple.  I'm sure that during my time at Amherst...all male..., fellow students had made similar remarks privately for whatever reasons.  Never on any " social media" outlet.  I do not approve of such type of remarks made nor do I like, approve of similar remarks made in today's music/songs, videos by all genders at any event, including political ones!
I'm sure, the investigation results will be out shortly and you will be able to obtain them.

No, amh63, I don't question your morality or integrity, nor do I expect any handwringing on your part. Our issue of this sort at Middlebury was a sexual hazing incident a few years ago with one of our so-called "minor" sports: they lost their season. You are choosing to be discreet, which is fine and understandable.

My problem I guess was with the phrase "what happens in Las Vegas, stays in Las Vegas" which is ambiguous at least - and seems often to express - wink, wink - a tacit "boys will be boys" approval. I'm glad you didn't mean that.

Amherst is conducting a full-blown investigation of the allegations with regard to the cross country team, retaining a former Massachusetts judge to conduct the investigation do we will likely be hearing more about this episode in the future. Not to in any way condone conduct of this nature, regardless of forum, it does remain a bit of mystery as to why the word has not gone out as to the permanency and danger of reducing bad thoughts to electronic form and then sharing them widely. .

More than a shame about cross-country team
Especially in light of what the Amherst Men's Soccer team article put forth during presidential campaign http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/locker-room-talk_us_5803819fe4b0e8c198a89710
a lot of positivity

Amherst has the right president to handle the present situation and prevent it from happenning again
As an alumnus and the father of two daughters who went to Amherst the college  needs to preserve the dignity and privacy of each person

Unfortunately this has happenned at too many institutions and schools

I think the words I was looking for was that this behavior is unacceptable
