It's hard to comprehend why they're cancelling the spring sports, but not the current winter sports - extreme action needs to be taken or it doesn't, which is it?

You've got five years to play four, but the fifth year isn't free. It is very rare for student-athletes not on an athletic scholarship to go that route.
I assumed the schools who cancelled sports did so mainly because all students had to leave campus. I don't know how they would continue athletic schedules that way.

You're also at a point, especially in the NESCAC, where the vast majority of the seniors either already have jobs or are pretty close to lining up jobs. Would require a lot of hoops to jump through to make that work for them individually, which is too bad. I would imagine a good number of NESCAC lacrosse players in particular would be good pickups for D1s.

It's simply heartbreaking to think of what all of the students at these schools, especially Seniors, are going thru with this, not just athletes. Think back to your last semester of college and the times spent with so many fellow students many of whom remain lifelong friends.  These kids sadly are having what to many of us was the most special time of our young lives taken away from them in a heartbeat.  It's awful by any measure.

Imagine being a high school senior, ready for your final games of your career in the biggest tournament, only to find out they're cancelled.

To put into perspective just how upsetting this is for players, here's the petition:

90,000 signatures. Crazy.

I havent read whether or not the NESCAC schools are going to let their teams participate in winter NCAA playoffs anymore, or if they are going to allow participation with conditions.   Any news on that?

All NCAA tourneys cancelled.  Bummer for Tufts men, and Amherst/Williams/Bowdoin/Tufts women.  Great year for all of them.  I wish there was some way to reschedule these games in a few months once the prognosis (presumptively) improves, but given the academic calendar, that seems incredibly unlikely.  Once the NBA and MLB called off their seasons, this step was frankly inevitable ...

From the Department of Silver Linings:  most seasons only one team per sport finishes the season with a win - this year dozens of them did! ;D

And with that, the 2019-20 seasons have come to a sudden end.

What a week it has been in college basketball. Exactly a week ago, as we hit the air, the first signs that COVID-19 was going to impact the NCAA Tournaments was seen. Since then, it has been a whirlwind.

Tonight on Hoopsville, we try and make sense of one of the stranger finishes in history for NCAA events. What started with isolated closings of gyms for games ends a week later in all games being called off through the rest of the academic year.

We will chat with those who were preparing for games on Friday and hear their reactions to the seasons coming to a close so quickly.

Guests Schedule (order subject to change):
- Michelle Ferenze, No. 10 Whitman women's coach
- John Krikorian, Christopher Newport men's coach
- Cheri Harrer, No. 9 Baldwin Wallace women's coach

What a stunning end to the season and year it has been!  Kudos to all of the NESCAC seniors in winter and spring sports, and to all of the good posters here. Until next year!

Those will be the three overwhelming favorites Greek.  Three teams with loaded senior classes ...

In non-hoops / Corona news, what's the deal with Amherst men's lacrosse??  Two troubling incidents in one year ...

Let's not forget Will Ingram, one of only three Panthers to play (15 mpg) in all 27 contests this past season and whose defensive efforts were often responsible for restoring order in games getting out of control.

NESCAC1 ... let the lacrosse thing play out.  The information reported is not accurate - what a shocker - and we are now in Duke 2006 territory, where the reported information was entirely inconsistent with the facts.   Some mistakes were made but it needs to play out.  And trust me Amherst will not remotely bend toward the athletes over non-athletes on such matters  The good news, if you will, is that this is 100% lacrosse related - no other students were involved.
