I knew SVC vs. Amherst wouldnt be a game. Almost 50 points!!!!! Amerst should really consider playing tougher opponents. They may be 18-0 but some of their games were against cake teams. Although 18-0 is still impressive but I think even if Hixon was in the line up in his wheel chair they still could of beat SVC!!!!!!

Simple Simon, could you be any more unoriginal?

Seeing as Steven's Point lost, I guess we can assume Amherst will drop to No. 3 or 4 in the rankings.

Oh yea? What is the rationale behind that?

They'll be lucky to remain in the top 5.  Obviously if everyone thought Stevens Point was that much better than Amherst before the loss, both team's reputations had to have crumbled with the win last night.

I asked Ben Rudin the extent of his injury, and he gave me the athlete's answer: "no big deal"

That means A) no big deal, or B) he has multiple fractures of the foot and will never walk right again.

We'll see.

Two tangential items: 1. When talking about the Director's Cup, keep in mind ice hockey doesn't count. Not enough teams play it, though everyone in NESCAC does (except Bates). Middlebury men have won 8 of the last 11 NCAA campionships; women - NCAA champs the last three years. Without hockey, Midd has been second three times and third twice (to Williams) since '98.

2. I played against Wesleyan's top single game scorer (44): Winthrop Davenport, nicknamed "Winky." He was an enormous guy (for the time) with good hands and a nice touch around the hoop. Tennis player Lindsey Davenport's dad.

I have no great interest in defending the honor of Williams, but that is not a true statement (as of last year, at least).  Middlebury got 50 points for winning Mens and Womens hockey (vs. 100 points for the basketball champions).

I also hear Lindsay Davenport's father went on to become an Olympic volleyball player.

Why does getteing 13th place in men's swimming give you more points than getting first place in hockey? Because more schools participate?

nescac hoops

jeffrookie,
i don't know for sure, but i am 90% sure that you're correct in terms of weighting scores based on the number of participating teams a given sport has. wrestling, skiing, hockey, fencing (didn't even know that counted until i saw the standings), etc. all score for less than sports like bball, soccer, tennis, baseball, etc.

needless to say, the point system makes as much sense as the BCS poll and you can't really say who is "number 1" in sports. however, the way the math works out for given sports, it often seems to favor williams. that being said, nescac football is given NO points b/c there is no postseason. i have no idea how nescac football teams would fare in an ncaa football tournament but i think williams has lost out on more points with no nescac postseason football than middlebury or amherst over the years.

The annual NESCAC football winner would not go far in the NCAA tournament - even in the best of years.

The Camels host Tufts tonight and Bates tomorrow. For the record, the Camels played both teams tight last year on the road even leading Tufts by 5 at halftime. Conn has returned their core group and added potential ROY Shavar Bernier. That said, the backcourt of Washington, Karis, and Mosely which was serviceable last year, is not producing this year at all (Will Lyons moved from fwd to guard and is the Camels best backcourt threat shooting 47% from 3). Last year against these opponents Charles Stone posted back-to-back double doubles of 17pts and 11reb, 16pts and 11reb. This year, Stone has been up and down including 2 pts and 5 reb in a blow out loss to Bowdoin. He bounced back in CC's 3 pt loss to Colby with 11pts and 10 reb.
Conn did not play this week. After a weak of stewing and practice I expect Stone and the Camels to play well tonight and tomorrow against Tufts and Bates.

Good post CC, thanks for the update on a team I admit I haven't followed very closely.  Here's my question for you though:

Do the Camels have good defenders outside?  Because against teams with good big men like Stone, Sheldon is likely to tell his big men to kick it outside to the Jumbo three-point shooters (Weitzen, O'Keefe, Pierce, Black), and CC's going to need to have some athletic guys to guard them.  Stone can do all he wants to offensively, but on the other end, the fact remains that big guys like Fitz are not the Jumbos' main source of scoring.  You'll need to contain Tufts' outside game.

CCsalive

Eclinchy- The short answer is "no."
Ulises Veras and Bernier are athletic defenders but they are young (soph and frosh). Big guards shoot over Washington and Mosely, and Karis and Lyons are a little slow.
The X-factor is Jeff Young who sat out the first semester. He can be as good a perimeter player as anyone in the league (Size, both ends of the court) (ask the Amherst gus if they remember him taking to Casnocha in the first-round NESCAC game last year).
The Camels need big nights out of Stone and Young, a low-scoring game, and lots of threes. But, they can pull that off (shooting 40% from 3 as a team).
Go Camels!

WOW! What a game by the Bowdoin Polar Bears over Trinity today.  Bowdoin jumped on them early but it soon became a close game.  It was one of the most exciting games I have seen in a while.  What a team effort by Bowdoin.  Hippert had 17 pts, Bradley had 13 pts and 9 assists, Sargentson had 6 and 6, Jackson had 11, and Fliegel 14.  Trinity was impressive as well.  They are so deep and have talent at every position.  Clarke is tough, as is P. MArtin, but Taylor was unreal scoring 22 pts.  Hippert, Bradley, P. MArtin, Taylor (even though he doesnt start) and Clarke need to be looked at as all nescac players even if they do not win those awards.  Great game, good luck to both teams.

The final score was:

Bowdoin 75 Trinity 69
