QuoteDon't forget Hamilton's Mike Schantz...National Player of the Year (won the Jostens the year after Nogelo)

I'll second the mention of Schantz for NESCAC players.

I feel for ya FPC85. I think that it is ironic how people on this board get blasted for being obnoxious fans, and then FPC85 attempts to address his team from a rational standpoint and people seem upset with him. I do think "have a chance" was a little exaggerated, as Amherst does have the talent, experience, and leadership, but all these areas haven't seemed to click for them all together yet. I think that they have the bulls eye on their back and teams are after them as is the case with any defending national champ, but either way they just don't seem to be playing up to expectations. I have to say, it does make for exiting league play. I'm not sure I don't think they will still come away with the title, but some improvements are a necessity for this to happen.

Quote from: fpc85 on January 20, 2008, 07:38:54 PMI tend to agree. the jeffs escaped with a hard fought win and will have to improve to ensure they have a chance when the play the rest of the conf. right now any team can beat them.  the jumbos and the bobcats fell short but who knows about the other teams.

Unbelievable.

Not sure why it's unbelievable.  Having been at the Amherst/Tufts game.....at this point, Amherst is definitely missing something from last year.  They are clearly the NESCAC favorite, but they seem to be more vulnerable than they were last year.

Kareem Tatum=All-Time NESCAC...#1 team in the nation, only nescac final 4 appearance outside of
Western Mass...it was less than 10 years ago!

Trinity '95. First Final Four in conference history. Three of the starting five couldn't spell their own name, but show some respect, junior. Come to think of it, Glenn Miller's troops fought the alphabet, as well, but they could ball.

Schantz got worked by mediocre players when he traveled to Bowdoin. I've got to believe he would have been a second-teamer without the luxury of the ever-competitive UCAA.

Amherst really needs to improve to even have a chance against Wesleyan...

senatorfrost

Amherst will handle Wesleyan easily. Wesleyan only has three stars. Amherst has seven. That's down from eight but still a lot more than three.

Glenn Miller's troops could ball? Are you thinking of the same Glenn Miller as I? Glenn Miller's music was and to an extent remains very popular, but substantively it was and is boring white bread bettered greatly by that of many, most notably the Duke.

Just wanted to say thanks to FPC for the Giants congratulations ... I'll be there in Phoenix to root for Big Blue (and against little 3 nemesis Belichick).

NESCAC is definitely pretty wide open right now.  But Amherst is still the favorite ... they remind me of Williams 2004, having a HUGE target on their back, missing a few ingredients from the prior title run, not winning in as convincing a fashion, but still managing to win almost all of their games.  If you recall, that was good enough to get the Ephs within two points of a national title.  Amherst is certainly flawed this year, but who else in the northeast is not?  No other team has even been tested with a deep tourney run.   Brandeis is strong but it appears that DeLuca may not be able to return or make an impact this year, which is huge.  RIC and Midd are probably each a year away.  Trin lacks the perimeter firepower.  Williams is way too inconsistent with its outside shooting and a few of its supposed stars have struggled a bit.  UMass Dartmouth looks very good but they have no post season experience and are still a question mark.  Bowdoin lacks a go-to playmaker / scorer.  Emerson has no size.  And so on ... nationally, the picture looks the same, outside of Rochester, which with Chmielowick's return looks very balanced and experienced, no one has been able to step up and consistently deliver the goods this eyar.

n1, now i am jealous! been a giant fan since the '70's. great watching them get it done last night. i would love to see pics when u get back. if the giants patriot game were a nescac hoops game i think it would be similar to a tufts amherst match-up in recent years. it could be close. heres hoping they can get the pats in ot.

all the teams you mentioned are very good and i think the jeffs would have to be on top of their game to beat them. brandeis proved that. provided all these teams get in the playoffs(they won't) i think the team with the home court may be critical. that's why winning now is vital for the jeffs. playing at lefrak is a distinct advantage for them. except when we play willams ;)

Sorry for the off topic digression, but good to see, fpc, that even Amherst and Williams fans can agree on something ... we've had season tix in my family (Grandfather, now Dad) since 1952 ... we went 0-3 in prior SB lotteries, so this has been a long time coming for Dad and I.  Will definitely have lots of pics when I return.  Dare I hope for the trifecta over the next two weeks: Giants S.B., hoops win over Amherst, and Obama win in South Carolina?  Were that to happen, I might have to just live the rest of my life as a hermit out of fear of the other shoe ...

i don't hate the ephs..great school and i am sure good people..they just chose the wrong school  ;). enjoy the priceless moment with your dad. it doesn't get much better than that! here's to the giants and obama  getting it done. sorry but i can't agree about your ephs...i am sure you will agree that there is nothing better than beating your rival on their homecourt. i wish i could be there..

how do the alum of both schools get along in the real world? i hope this rivalry stuff is kept in prospective.
