How big is Amherst gym? I have heard everything from 1,700 to 600. Anyone out there have the "real" capacity?

When I was there, I figure it out this way.  I think I counted 10 rows on each side.

Figure 94 feet per side, (6 foot end lines make up for aisles).  Assume we do the old Maxcy Hall move to the center, and pack everyone in cheek to cheek, 18" per person.  That gives you 1250 in the bleachers.
(Deputy - neither you or I will fit in 18", but there's lots of slender coeds to make up for us.)

94 (feet) * (12/18) [butts/foot] * 10 rows * 2 sides = 1253.

Then they put a platform at one end with about four rows of 40, (not great seats) so I figure another 150-160 - 1400 tops.

Maxcy for example has 21 rows per side, plus the camera galleries.  Their bleachers also extend into the out of bounds areas at both ends.

For Welsh gym in Maxcy I figure

100 feet * .67 (people/feet) * 21 rows * 2 sides = 2800, Maxcy has a deep out of bounds area on the side opposite the bench that can easily hold 150-200 sitting on the floor, and the camera stands have held another 100-150.  They've had 3200 in the building for Elite 8 games in the past, and routinely have 2500 plus for sectionals.

Both places probably count the benches, scorers table, cheerleaders etc. in the capacity,
I'm dizzy.

Amherst is up 8-0

After searching my vast archives I found the following information:

Amherst played in the 1996 Cardinal Classic. (@ Plattsburgh State's old Memorial Hall - aka before renovations) The Lord Jeffs squared off with Plymouth State in the first round and Plattsburgh took on York. Amherst beat Plymouth and Plattsburgh fell to York in overtime. Amherst went on to beat York for the title!
Please make the following replacements:

1996 = 2008
Cardinal Classic = Sweet 16
Plymouth St. = Richard Stockton
York = Brandeis
title = final four

17-0 Amherst
5:00 minutes into the game.

42-30 Amherst at the half.

I would estimate Olson has about 10 points, 5 assists and 3 turnovers. Walters has 12 points on 4 threes. Baskauskas has about 10 points too.

Richard Stockton shoots a LOT of threes.

-Brandeis leads 52-44 with just over nine minutes to play.  Anyone in the mood to see two Massachusetts teams play in Plattsburgh's gym?
-Now 64-58, 2:15 left.
-33 seconds left, Plattsburgh's fouling.  69-61 Deis.
-74-63 final... Jeffs/Judges tomorrow.
-HAHA.  Postgame interview with Brian Meehan, all the Brandeis fans in the background are chanting "We Want Amherst," and Meehan responds with "I don't know if any thinking person would want them."  Priceless.

From a Cardinal Fan!!

My hats off to Brandeis for a great game. Roberson was terrific throughout the first half and the remainder of the contest. It seemed that Plattsburgh tied the game at 56-56 then ran out of gas. Olson's trey after the Cards had used up a lot of energy to tie the game was huge. Even bigger was "Big Shot Joe's" Coppens three after a wild scramble.

A tough call on Williams in the first half really hurt Plattsburgh. After he went out of the game the Judges went on a 16-4 run to close out the half. 39-30 at the break.

The Cards came out and played terrific defense earlier in the second half but could not convert.

Brandeis spectator bus was a big boost to their team. They were vocal and in to the game throughout. To bad there were some empty seats in their section that some one from Plattburgh could have sat in. Reportedly no one rooting for Plattsburgh was allowed to sit behind the Brandeis bench? Someone stated that it was an NCAA rule? Who knew. The only people that I noticed that were not from Brandeis were some coaches and players from Trinity. They seemed to be pulling for Brandeis.

Should be a good game tomorrow night. Two really well coached teams going head to head.

Great job by the Cards this year!! They have nothing to be ashamed of at all. They are part of history. Some say one of the best teams ever in Plattsburgh. The 1976 team went to the Final Four but these guys have to rate right up there. Thanks senior class for a memorable four years. You have set a terrific standard for Plattsburgh Basketball!!!!!!!!!!!!

The NCAA doesn't have to agree with our rankings.

Well, no they don't but I think they would at least have both Bradeis and Amherst somewhere in the top 10. The two schools are an hour and a half apart! Looking quickly through Plattsburg's schedule, their only NCAA caliber win seemed to be Middlebury while Amherst and Brandeis have a combined 10+ wins against NCAA teams. I hope for the sake of ridiculousness, that its an Amherst-Brandeis final this weekend (which I would bet on anyways) playing 5+ hours away on the Canadian border in front of only their parents while their student bodies listen to a spotty d3cast broadcast.

Looks like my wish came true! Shocking! Walzy, can we get an over/under on the attendance for this Elite 8 game? The NCAA REALLY botched this one up for what would have been a really great game for all of Massachusetts to see.

Wow.  Not a lot of respect for the Amherst fans, huh?  What is that, three hours up 87?

I guess when you're planning for a trip to Salem, going North to Plattsburgh isn't all that exciting.

Walzy,

After seeing your point spreads I wouldn't bet against you!!!!!!!! The Brandeis spectator bus is probably back on the road again as we speak. They will make up a huge chunk of the 525. (Rumor has it that the Brandies fans got back on their bus last night around 10:30 p.m. and drove all the way back to Beantown!!!? They were then to board the bus again today and drive all the way back to the Burg for the Elite 8 finals)!!! This is according to the Brandeis web site.

Amhest probably had 50 to 75 fans (Generous Total!!) at last night game. Any chance more will make the ride up on Saturday afternoon to catch the game!!!

I imagine more tickets were sold then what will actually be at the game. Therefore the NCAA won't care. They have the cash in their pockets!!!!!!!!!!!!

hoops, spring break destroys our fan base...the fans who are there will show the usual support...the salem comment indicates a certain disdain for the jeff fans....that's too bad we are a great group..you should stop by today and get to know us.

Amherst returns to the Final Four with a convincing 65-55 victory over Brandeis, tonight at Plattsburgh's Memorial Hall Gymnasium, avenging an earlier 72-62 loss to the Judges back in December.
Brandeis opened the game outscoring the Lord Jeffs by a 13-6 margin over the 1st 7 mins. of the half. The teams traded basket with the Judges opening up their largest lead of the night at 25-17 with 4 mins. remaining. Amherst closed the gap slightly and the teams went to the break with Brandeis in front 29-24. Fletcher Walters was the main man for Amherst going 6x10 from the field and scoring 13 pts in the half. The Judges were paced by Kevin Olsen's 11 pts on 4x7 shooting. The Lord Jeffs came out firing on all cylinders to start the 2nd period and over the 1st 6 mins outscored Brandeis 14-7 to grab their 1st lead of the night at 38-36. 4 mins. later they had opened up a 12 pt. lead on the strength of another 10-0 run, with 10 mins left in the game. Kevin Hopkin with 2 huge dunks, Brandon Jones with 6 pts. and Walters with 6 pts helped fuel those bursts which essentially put the game away for the Jeffs. They reached their largest lead at 51-38 with 7:00 mins. remaining and the Judges never got closer that 7 pts. the rest of the way.
Walters led Amherst with 22 pts followed by Hopkins with 12, Jones with 11, and Andrew Olsen chipped in with 9.
Brandeis was paced by 17 from Joe Coppens, 13 from Terrell Hollins and 11 from Olsen.
Amherst now moves on to face Ursinus in the Semi-Finals in Salem Va. on March 21st. Congratulations to Amherst. They have an outstanding team and sure look like a team that can repeat. Walters and Olsen are the stars but the other 3 starters can all hurt you as well. Good Luck. I hope the Amherst fans and posters are feeling a little better about having come to our fair city and small gym. After all you did make the Final Four and your players did shoot pretty well in our place. Especially Friday night, when it was raining 3's in the 1st half.

magicman,
thanks. the games were fun and plattsburgh was fine. i never had a problem going. it was no offense to the fans or the city. me and family took in a movie hung out at the pool in the hotel... tried to get a ticket to the plattsburgh game..didn't happen and I watched it on tv. i wish more fans could ahve been in attendance but i understand...i remember when the jeffs lost to rochester in '05 and i had no interest in watching them play the next day. i bet the area is even more beautiful in the spring/summer months.
