The '48 Browns and the '29, '30 and '31 Packers.

It's not really fair to compare teams from different eras.  The pack were dominant back then, but wouldn't stand a chance if they played any of today's teams.  Where is walzy's time machine?

How would a modern team fare under 20s rules and conditions - almost no substitution (player leaving game was finished for the day), different ball (less passing friendly), limitations on passing, no coaching from bench to field, no weight training, no steroids, inferior medical care and nutrition, travel solely by train, etc.?

I believe this discussion is better suited for the NESCAC football board. :)

Unfortunately, all of this historical NFL talk is making my mind spin. My time machine only lets me see the scoreboard of the next days NESCAC basketball games. It's a shame.

Amherst is the best men's d3hoops of the last century.

frank uible

Wrong! All hoops since time immemorial.

The 2008 amherst team versus the 1966 Celtics.  Sure, the Celtics had Russell but Kevin Hopkins is also 6'10" and the players back then look a lot slower according to ESPN.
#3 for 3...good!

eclinchy great article about the jeff seniors after the championship game.

So I probably shouldn't have chimed in about the which team was better debate, because I think we're all forgetting one particular Amherst squad, but anyway, I was serious about the Amherst - Williams Alumni Game as a fundraiser.  Anybody ever heard of such a thing happening at a NESCAC or DIII school in general?  Just thinking that we could use some of the energy from that rivalry for a good cause...

Since there's time to kill...Anybody feel up to putting together the best 12 man roster for each of the NESCAC schools made up of players from the last 10 years?  that could be a quite a debate, and then I say we do an ESPN.com style bracket and see which team comes out on top, any takers?  I nominate Walzy as the GM for the Amherst squad by the way

I hear that Joe Reilly is the top canidate for the Weselyan job...Why would he want to leave Bates?

nescac1

re: Reilly, location, location, location.  Bates is in Lewistown, not exactly the most wonderful place on earth, and Reilly has deep roots in CT, so it would be a homecoming of sorts.  If he can recruit top talent to Lewistown, he'll have an even easier time doing so to Wesleyan, especially considering his massive connections in the region.  If he goes to Wesleyan I predict they'll be competitive in NESCAC w/in 3 years.

re: blacklordjeff's question, I'd say for Williams  the starting five would be Coffin, Nogelo, Hunt, Frew, and Crotty ... I'd like the chances of that five against anyone.  The second five would be Demuth, Kain, Abba, Folan, Shalvoy, with Geoghegan (if current underclassmen are eligible) as an extra big guy and Cole as a defensive stopper off the bench.

'04 amherst squad is considered as good as the '07 &'08 squads by some members of the '08 class.

the amherst/williams alumni game would be great... i think both schools would find go for it.

Shalvoy is a top 10 Williams basketball player of all time?

nescac1

No, but he just asked for a roster of 12 from the last ten years, and he is the second best true point guard in that time period (unless you count Frew, who is really a 2).
