Hope / Calvin is a great rivalry.  However, given the history of Williams and Amherst, Hope / Calvin comes in a close second.

The series stands at 86-83 Hope, with about 97 total points separating the teams.  When I was in school it was 58-58 with 1 point between them.

The two schools have combined to win 53 of the last 57 MIAA Championships, most of the time the other school was in second place.

Does Amherst/Williams do this?......... http://www.hopecalvin.com/gather/index.htm    There will be 3500 in Holland, but thousands more watching the game on satellite across the country.

I didn't see Williams/Amherst on ESPN's list of greatest college basketball rivalries........Hope/Calvin was #4.

The population of Amherst, MA is comparable to Holland, MI.  However, only 1,600 students attend Amherst.  In addition, the town of Amherst is dominated by the main campus of U-Mass, with a hoops team that competes in the A-10 and certainly draws a majority of the local fan base.  Hope has no comparable competition for the local fan base in Holland.  Similarly, but to a lesser extent, Calvin is the main collegiate sports draw in Grand Rapids.

Hope / Calvin is a great rivalry.  However, given the history of Williams and Amherst, Hope / Calvin comes in a close second.

Population makes no difference in the attendence figures, the crowds at these games are nearly 100% affiliated with either school.  Season ticket holders/students/alumni/big doners.

We've played two games against each other in recent years over 100 miles away, in both cases the gym was a sell-out.

Conn is a lock to finish in the top-half of the league.
Bernier is a Player of the Year candidate as a Junior.
Porter for ROY.
Satran for Coach of the Year.
A lock, huh? I like the passion.

Bernier may not even be a first team all-conference selection considering the Big 3 from Williams, Baskauskas, Pierce, Smith, Rudin, and Wheeler all jump to my mind as the cream of the conference.

and player/fan relationships between the two schools that Williams and Amherst don't have.

Speaking from personal experience, the children of the corn at Williams and some of their student fans have expressed some disturbingly intense sentiments towards Amherst players and fans.

I think one thing we can all agree on is that Greg Sager is a troublemaker.  ;)

I remember reading just few years back that the series was tied in both wins and score, which is pretty nuts.

That being said, the Amherst/Williams feud was in full fever pitch before Calvin and Hope were even founded. Also, just to be a snob and blow my karma rating permanently down the tubes, it helps that the Amherst/Williams rivalry is between two elite academic institutions that are battaling it out at the top of the USA Today polls as well as on the basketball floor. The fact that so many Williams students are bitter about being rejected from Amherst really adds fuel to the fire.  ;)

I have no intention of dinging your karma, but I just thought I'd mention in passing how much I enjoy it when somebody touts the academic superiority of his institution ... and misspells a word in the process. :D

Not only that, I think the poster meant the USNews rankings, not the USA Today polls.

I thought ephoops made a lot of very good and important points. I thought his numbers were extremely persuasive.
However, he neglected to mention that route 2 is also a little dangerous. I took it once and that was more than enough. There are huge drop offs where your car can fall perhaps hundreds of feet. I didn't bother to actually take a look and I certainly never went back.
I used to take route 7 but it's two lanes and very slow.

Hamilton is an erratic team so far this year.....drilled by CC and then beat Williams.  Or maybe Williams is the erratic team.

ephoops

That's a bad loss by the Ephs in Williamstown to a mediocre Hamilton team.

NESCAC1 - What happened ???  A quick review of the boxscore shows that Snyder took only 7 shots in 34 minutes and had only 7 points.  Schultz had a tough shooting day (4-13, only 1-6 from 3-pt.).  The lone bright spot was Joe G with 18 pts and 13 boards.

Senfro, that hairpin turn is the worst.

Can we get some more info on the Hamilton v Williams game? As a Hamilton alum I do take pride in this victory even though I stood and cheered for my Camels as the Shilacked my alma mater like only a top-half NESCAC team could and should. You might recall that I said that Hamilton was awful and should not bother joining NESCAC. I take that back. They would add a nice flavor to the conference.

Conn beat Hamilton by 25 pts. Hamilton beats Williams. I love it.
Before one of you Gotlieb wannabees pipes in about Harvard>BC>UNC just know that I won't have it.
Conn beat Eastern Conn who beat Trinity.
Conn battled Wheaton before losing by 7pts, but Wheaton beat Tufts.

The Camels are for real.

Lastly, whoever it was that wrote that Williams had something of a "Big Three" please take it back. Amherst had a Killer Five, Williams had a Dynamic Duo in Crotty and Crossin (I don't care if I got his name wrong), but their current squad has nothing approaching a Big Three. They did pick-up a BIG L to the Continentals of Clinton, NY.
