Bates has played 14 games (6-8) this season, 13 on the road. How can that be?

Seven of their last ten are at home. Still that's an 8-16 home-road split. Tough schedule.

That is about as bad at it can get.  I thought MIT's road/home ratio was tough (they played only 4 of 13 non-conference games at home), but only one out-of-conference home game is just crazy.

Did you think I was dead?

Here are my thoughts on Connecticut College in 09-10:

If you look at the minutes you'll notice that Conn has five players averaging 27 minutes/game or more. After that, the next guy plays 18 min/game. Depth is a major issue. Satran would love to play a faster style(with more "sets"), but trust me he is getting the most out of what he has(Conn's motion O controls the tempo which they need to do). Conn's road effort this weekend was one of their better showings vs Trinity and Amherst. If Amherst doesn't shoot 24/26 from the line (amazing actually), the result may have been different. Conn's season has been up and down (good to see them bounce back and beat Mitchell on Monday...a cross town rival who is never very good but who has athletes and would love to beat Conn). Road wins at Hamilton and Wheaton (are they any good?) and a win at home over Springfield (average team at best, I guess?) show that Conn is capable (as does their competitive showing this weekend).
Bernier, Lampe, and Porter are all potential all-league players and frosh Rob Harrigan is really contributing, but Conn needs more athletes.

Sorry for my absence...I hope to follow a little more closely and to bring some noise to this page.

Old Guy - NESCAC rookie of the year candidate Wolfin doing a nice job of filling the shoes of Rudin - a little taller - better 3 point shooter - good poise and leadership for a freshman - not much opposition to date - the real season is about to begin

NESCAC all-conference possibilities have certainly evolved considerably since the start of the season ... at this point, I'd say it will likely be a three-way race for player of the year between Meehan, Choice, and Schultz, with Wang and Sharry rounding out the first team, if things continue as is.

Sha Brown will almost surely win ROY (the two Midd guys cancel each other out a bit, and Robertson / Workman from Williams / Amherst don't yet have big enough roles, but those five would form a pretty solid all-frosh squad, but outside of the top three teams and Wesleyan, the frosh groups seem a bit uninspiring this year), with one of the top two Midd defenders taking defensive player of the year (Whittington would have a shot if he got more PT, but as is, seems like Locke or Edwards is the guy).  Second team is pretty wide open, with Wheeler, Russell from Colby, Bernier and Porter from Conn, Pierce, Brian Ellis, and Hanley and Phillips from Bowdoin all contenders ...

Wolfin is fun, no doubt about it. Our best three point shooter. Comes in and Edwards moves to the 2. Very different player from Rudin. It will be fun to watch him develop.

But catch Thompson when he comes to your town. Plays the whole game - in your shirt defense, hits the three, gets out on the break (very fast). Wolfin and Thompson are averaging an identical 10.8 pts a game. They complement one another (and Edwards) well.

Former Tufts BB player wins MA US Senate seat tonight!  Wants to play Pres. Obama in a 2 on 2 game.  The Tufts player will be joined by his daughter who plays BB for Boston College.  Hope it is in jest.  I hear that the President plays a mean BB game.

And he could bring in his brother-in law (the coach at Oregon State), or (probably) any NBAer he chooses!).

An interesting game at New Paltz tonight. In the first half, Williams had a chance to blow the game open, but couldn't do it. The margin got to about 10 several times, but Williams couldn't sustain it. In the second half, the Hawks did the best job this year of shutting the Ephs out of what they were trying to do. Almost no open 3s, for example. Offensively, New Paltz was very effective at isolating defenders and driving to the basket. They made many really tough shots. It was a dog fight to th end. James Wang played well down the stretch, as did Blake Schultz. The other guy who was indespensible tonight was Troy Whittington, who did a great offensive job, as well as blocking a lot of shots. It was a good team win on a night that they could have lost.

magicman

toad, were you at the game or did you watch it online?

Front page of d3hoops has the Babson buzzer-beater against Bowdoin.  Bowdoin continues to be the hard-luck team of the year, with all of their losses being heart-breakers.

Thanks for the recap, Toad.  These SUNY teams give Williams a tough time.  Williams, it sounds like, got a bit lucky with the potential winning shot rimming out.  Ephs have played FAR better at home than on the road this year, but to their credit, they gutted out the win last night.  It will be interesting to see if they can put away Wesleyan and/or Conn this weekend, or if they will struggle a bit again away from Chandler.

This article mentions a Williams recruit, although obviously he has not "gotten in" because if he had, that would mean he was an ED admit and already committed to the school:

Been very quiet on the recruiting front for both Williams and Amherst, who each badly need a guy at a key position (the four for Williams, the point for Amherst).  Interesting that Maker is looking at another Pacific NW guy after bringing in two players from that region last year; he must have some serious ties to the area.  Midd has a few guys from that region as well.

magicman,
I may have been the only Eph fan there.

Saw that Curry beat Colby-Sawyer last night in OT.  Curry has a very good BIG upfront.  Since Amherst plays Curry on the road on Thursday, it should be interesting to see how Amherst young front line matches up with a big front line at Curry that is the offensive heart of the team (looking at the stats of past games). Tuneup for Midd and Will?   Will be on the road to Florida.  If my motel has free internet connections, will try to catch the game.
Amherst recruiting may be limited this year due to the large classes the past two years.  An interesting side note on recruiting.  At the Stevenson game, talked with some Amherst alum's whose son was also there.  The son has gone ED to Bowdoin and hopes to play BB there...at the guard position, I believe.  His mother had played BB at Amherst.  After the game, the family stopped to talk to Hixon and he put his arm around the kid.  I am sure the family had visited Amherst and chatted with the coach.  My thoughts are that the kid may have been discouraged by his playing time at Amherst.  His attention picked up when I mentioned to his parents that Amherst needs point guard material...in my opinion.

amh...
since he already went ED at bowdoin, perking up about the point guard position may be moot. it does seem that future playing time at amherst (and williams) is often not promising when getting recruited unless you are a phenom. you have to wait and hope they don't recruit over you when your time to play finally comes.

Aside from providing ridiculous depth, "phenoms" who are willing to ride the bench for much (if not most) of their college career knowing that they could be 1000 pt scorers elsewhere probably have characteristics that are essential for championship caliber teams.
