Here is an interesting article that mentions the players from Heritage high school in Colorado.  The article mentions former and future Williams players Kevin Snyder and James Klemm, as well as Jimmy Bartolotta.

Are most of the players from Amherst who are going to play in Europe wealthy? Outside of the top guys, most of them are not really "professional" athletes in terms of being able to fully support themselves for the year on what they make. They are decent players and a few may make a bit of money, especially after moving up to better leagues, but many leagues over there (that they are playing in) barely pay the players anything outside of basic living expenses.

Just curious, I went to the NESCAC tourney two years ago, does anyone know if a player had a license plate (I think MI) that read "D3Champs"? Seeing it definitely made my day, although it could have been a non-basketball player.

I played with a few guys in college that played overseas, and usually contracts are worked out so that you can live off of them.  However, a lot of times, you have duties other than just playing for the team.  For example, you may have to do camps or work at the gym during the days giving lessons, etc.  in order to make your full paycheck.  Obviously, in the the top leagues you are not expected to do these things, but in some of these regional leagues playing basketball may not be your only responsibility in terms of "work".

Most teams overseas will also provide some type of housing and meals as well. You are correct about additional duties too. Players going to play overseas(either in lower Euro leagues or other countries) are usually doing it for an "experience" or in the hopes of moving up to higher division. Most American players are not going to move up like that though. There are so many myths pertaining to play overseas. The money(for the most part) is not great and the experience can be awful. I have heard many stories where players do not get paid or the accomodations are awful. It is interesting to see so many Amherst kids getting a shot and taking it.

A lot of that is the differences between eastern and western Europe, too.

I would disagree, in general, with that statement.  I think there is more variation from league-to-league than say east/west.   Obviously some western european leagues are at a high level, such as Spain, Germany, and France. However, some of the other western leagues are pretty crappy, such as the British and Irish leagues (for example).  Then you have some good southern/central leagues, like Italy and Greece, and there are also some good leages in the east, like the Turkish Super League.

Pretty weak showing for NESCAC, which I guess is unsurprising after a down year for the conference and a poor NCAA showing.  But Bridgewater State?  Come on.  I know they had a flukey win over Midd in the NCAA's, but they had a middling record in a bad conference last year, and lost their one true star, not to mention the other guy who lit up Middlebury down the stretch.  NESCAC is going to be much improved this year, and I'd be willing to bet the conference finishes the regular season with at least two teams in the top 20 and at least 1-2 more on the cusp.  I think NESCAC will return to its usual beating up of New England teams, other than UMD.

Thank You Walzy - Glad to finally be apart of this knowledgeable site. As for Coach Sheldon giving the officials a piece of his mind, as a former player I can only sympathize for the new players coming to play for Tufts. It has taken the teams of the past a good amount years to build up Tufts Basketball reputation as one of the punkiest teams in the nescac and the refs know it. Therefore Bobby can say all he wants to the officials (and he will 5.5 is an easy over bet) and they are still not going to  give him a call.

How does Dan Cook, Bryan Lowry, and Sam Mason look to fair this year? Will any of them have a major role on the team or will they continnue to be role players? I look for Mason to have a breakout year personally with his athleticism, he just needs some confidence in this brittle bones of his.

Outside of the top leagues in those countries, the money is not what most people would think of. I would love to know what the Amherst guys are making. There are many many leagues around the world but most fall far short of what people would think.
