I posted this on the women's NESCAC board, but certainly it applies to both boards.  Good news for NESCAC fans as these power rankings give you a combination of Director's Cup points and US News and World Report College rankings to rank where "student" athletes are appreciated for their brains and athletic abilities.  4 of the top 10 are NESCAC schools.

Are there any preseason D3 rankings other than the Sporting News? Are any NESCAC teams ranked in the top 25?

Gregory Sager

The DIII News preseason ranking has Williams #5 and Middlebury #24.

As I've said in the past, the only preseason ranking worth taking seriously is the d3hoops.com preseason ranking.

The UT-Dallas site lists the entire DIII News Top 25...

And I agree with Greg - the D3hoops.com poll is the only D3 poll worth taking seriously.  There are some teams included in the the DIII News poll, for example, that don't belong...like Wash U (which lost 4 starters, including 2 All-Americans).

The top 8-9 of the DIII News poll actually looks pretty good -- I think that the D3hoops poll won't look all that different at the top.  I mean, slide St. Norbert in at number 9, slide Williams down a slot and Wooster up a slot, and they just about nailed it.  But yeah, starting at number 10, it kind of goes off the rails.

Although a bit early, assuming teams don't lose any major contributors unexpectedly, I expect New England, pre-season, to look something like this:

1.  Williams (still the team to beat, although the top group are very closely bunched this year, unlike last year, I could see the top four all finishing anywhere from 1-4), 2. Middlebury, 3. MIT, 4. Amherst, 5. WPI, 6. Western Conn, 7. RIC, after that, it's anybody's guess.  None of the top leagues in the region (NESCAC, NEWMAC, Little East) look particularly deep this year, although all have some very experienced teams at the top.

are there any other recent NESCAC grads that played or are playing abroad?

Midd grad Ben Rudin is playing in Israel

Conn College great Shavar Bernier recently hired at DII Saint Michael's College in VT as a second assistant.

Speaking of Conn College, it seems the rumors posted here last spring about a ton of guys quitting the team are true, based on this season preview:

http://aspen.conncoll.edu/news/6514.cfm?var1=mbasketball

Seven out of 13 returning players on the roster quit.  Dean Lampe seems like, however, the only non-returning upperclassman who was a major contributor.

I note that among the nine newcomers is a transfer from the Naval Academy, Pete Banos, who is instantly one of the largest players in NESCAC at 6'10, 257:

Could be a rough year at Conn unless a few of the newcomers are instant stars.  Seems like Conn goes through one of these massive waves of defection / infusion of new players every 4-5 years.  Anyone know the story behind all those guys quitting?

How is Coach Satran still coaching? More than half the team quit last season and dozens in the past have also either quit or transfered.

Satran is going into I believe his 9th season as head coach and has accumulated a 14-58 NESCAC record! Regardless of players quitting and transferring this record is completely unacceptable.  There is also no doubt in my mind that this upcoming season could potentially be a disaster with nine freshmen and no seniors on the team.

Coach Satran drills the Princeton Offense into his player's heads without any regard to other facets of the game.  His coaching style is extremely one-dimensional and almost never emphasizes the importance of defense and rebounding.  His coaching strategies are far below average and his record speaks for this.

Dear former CC player, who would have been a senior this year but quit the team.  I would just like to point out that email addresses are visible and therefore your identity is not anonymous.  You may want to consider changing your email address.

Note to posters, create an account with a gmail or similar address which does not ID you to those who would out you here.  Sadly, the more important area for discussion is the situation at CC which sounds pretty bad.

Anonymous personal depreciation of the foregoing sort is not only irrespnsible but also craven.

The season is fast approaching, and I thought I might try to stimulate some discussion by laying out how I see the season. The top teams going into the season seem to be Middlebury, Williams and Amherst. Though Amherst had a poor season last year, that was mostly due to Meehan getting hurt. As long as he stays healthy, they could be the best team in the league. They are the team with the deepest talent, and I understand the brought in some great new players. Middlebury has the second deepest pool of talent, and mostly young. The only question is who will pick up the leadership role now that Edwards has departed. Williams is not as deep in talent as Amherst or Midd, but they arguably have the two most talented players in Wang and Whittington. Either one of these guys could end the season as a first team All American. The challenge for Williams is to integrate several untested players into the mix. One of these 3 teams will likely win the NESCAC. I view Trinity, Wesleyan, Bates, and Colby as the middle of the pack, but all being dangerous. I just don't see them as having enough talent to win it all. Finally, Bowdoin, Tufts and Conn appear to be at the bottom. A lot, of course depends on injuries and new players, but I'll be quite surprised if things don't end up about like this.

ALJ2010

Amherst got the runner up for player of the year in North Carolina, Aaron Toomey.  He was 2nd behind Reggie Bullock who is now playing for the NC Tar Heels.  From googling him he was all state 2 yrs and put up big numbers at Bishop Mcguiness HS.  If he is as good as it seems, Amherst will be very tough with him and Meehan in the backcourt.
