Ephs suffer their first non-NESCAC / NCAA loss in three years today to Salem State.  Seems like Salem shot the lights out, and Williams was pretty cold.  Salem is a solid team, but not a squad the Ephs of the last few years would have lost to (granted, the team is missing some key players right now, with others just rounding into shape after missing most or all of the pre-season). The Ephs really need to get healthy quickly and hopefully put things together as things don't get any easier with Wesleyan coming to town ... a 1-2 start would leave little margin for error later in the year, and the schedule only gets tougher.  Hopefully Nate Robertson in particular will be back soon, as he is the key to making the offense run efficiently, and also the team's top perimeter defender.

Don't know the story here, but Ryan Sharry NOT in the starting line-up as Middlebury tips off the season against Gwynedd Mercy.

Middlebury leads GM, 40-27, at the half.

First-team AA Ryan Sharry has not played; don't know the story there. Peter Lynch doing his best Sharry impression w/ 9 pts (on perfect 4-4 shooting) and 4 boards at the intermission. Wolfin w/ 5 assists and a couple of treys. Kizel (9 pts) and Thompson (5) have also dialed it up from long range.

Three freshmen have seen action, and Jack Roberts got the first start of his career.

Seems like typical Midd defense, holding GM to 38 percent from the floor while forcing 11 turnovers.

Won't have a wrap-up until later this evening....unless Old Guy beats me to it.

Amherst crushes Wash. & Lee 100-64 or something like that.  Did not follow the game on-line via live stats....was watching the women's soccer team upset JHU at Messiah live.  Needed to get out and watch something live.  Came home and saw the score and glanced over the boxscore quickly.  Sixteen players scored for Amherst.  The battle of big men that I hoped to follow did not happen as 6'9" P. Kaasilla had 9 boards, C. Johnson had 7 boards and A. Toomey had 6 boards, while the big man from the Generals had only 6 boards.  Still concern with the foul shooting of Amherst as it was around 60 %.  Expect the Coach to run them hard on this lack of focus as foul shooting was an area of focus for last year's team.  Will await the write-up when it is posted.

Hamilton wins their own tip-off tournament as they come back from an early 16 point deficit. Continentals were down 25-9 with 5 minutes left in the half and close to 29-20 at the break. They finally take their 1st lead with 5 minutes gone in the 2nd period 33-32 on a layup by last year's leading scorer Pat Sullivan. 12 lead changes and 7 ties would follow with the final lead change coming on a layup by Hamilton's Greg Newton, with 2 seconds left to play. Newton scored the final 6 points for the Continentals.

Newton led Hamilton with 18 points, followed by Sullivan with 16 pts. and 8 rebounds. Hans Schulte also had double figures with 12 pts. Continentals off to a good start for new coach Adam Stockwell. They may struggle in the NESCAC this year with Williams, Middlebury and Amherst all loaded but I expect Stockwell to have his program in the thick of things in the near future. Hamilton now 2-0 after a 69-66 win yesterday over Bridgewater St.

Middlebury beats Gwynedd Mercy, 76-70.

Again, not sure why Ryan Sharry didn't play. Sure hope it's nothing serious. Peter Lynch ably fills in, posting a career high 19 on 9-10 shooting. Joey Kizell appeared to have a great all-around game with 18 points, 6 assists and 5 boards. Wolfin, too, was a presence with 14 pts, 7 assists and 7 boards. Nolan Thompson logged the most minutes (36) as he did all of last year, so I expect he played his stellar D; the stat sheet shows 3 steals to go with 5 boards and 7 points.

Tomorrow against ranked Ramapo on their home floor will be very tough...that much more so if Sharry can't go.

Old Guy

I was told at the hockey game that Sharry was injured in practice yesterday: ankle. I don't know how seriously.

Probably gonna take the 55 or so minute drive from CT down to Ramapo.  Thinking either that tournament or the Amherst women's tournament, but Ramapo wins because the Ramapo Mid game is probably better then the St. Lawrence Amherst women's game and Ramapo is closer then Amherst to me which is good because it just took me 3 hours to get home from Salem State tonight and took the 4.5 hour drive up to Oneonta earlier in the week.  Hopefully Mid & Ramapo don't dissapoint me because the Gwynedd-Mercy Yeshiva game SHOULD be a total blowout.

You're logging some serious miles this week.  6 hrs RT to Salem St., 9  hrs RT to Oneonta, and 2 hrs RT tomorrow. When did you find time to make your picks in this weeks National pick em contest?  :D

I stayed overnight in Mass last night, so was really like 2 hours yesterday (Western to Regis), 50 minutes this morning (Regis to Salem state) and than 3 hours (Salem back home).  Also on a Sunday I maybe even to do that drive in less time; last year I made it back from Ramapo in 50 minutes.

in 2 weeks could be even more: Dec 3 got our games @ UMass-Boston (2.5 hours but gonna overnight it), Dec 5 @ SUNY-Cobleskill (don't even know where that is, all I know is that it's pretty far away), Dec 7 might go up to Franklin Pierce depending on D-3 games that day and Dec 8 Framingham state (only about 2 hours though.  Will seem like a piece of cake though.)

Wesleyan got a nice win against a decent Curry team last night with big lines from Brown (22 pts 8 assists) and Thomas (20 pts 12 reb) to start the season 2-0 and setting up a nice matchup in a couple days against Williams.

Seeing as this is a Little Three matchup, Im sure all that can play will but does anyone have definitive info regarding the return of Williams injured backcourt?

The Amherst-W&L game info is posted on the Amherst website.  The writer is C. Johnson a senior player who had an outstanding rebounding night with 7 boards.
7express.....are you still attending classes at WCSU?  Seems you are doing a great deal of driving to BB games lately.

I was at the Amherst / W & L game yesterday. The recap tells the story very well: Too much Toomey with 16pt, 7ast, 6reb in 22 mins. The first six guys (Barrise, Kaasila, Workman, Toomey, Waller, & Williamson) all were over 50% from the field.
Good production from Amherst's big men: Kaasila (20mins) and Holmes (15mins) combining for 22 and 13.

Amherst looks sharper than they usually do this early in the season. Tough to defend the length and shooting abilities of the Jeffs. Washington & Lee had a couple talented players and I thought they would give Amherst a better game considering their win the day before over Elms. They probably were a bit tired considering the travel from Virginia and the dog fight against Elms. They should be able to compete in the middle-tier of the ODAC, but the big three (RMU, Va Wes, and Guilford) will hand out some bruises similar to yesterday's result.

The strangest part of the game was when 10 of the guys on the Amherst bench went over to the court behind the curtain and played a full 5 v 5 game while the real game was going on. Luckily, the five starters and other six subs were able to get it done against W&L.
It really is remarkable how many guys are on the bench right now. I am assuming a couple cuts will be coming down the pike over the next week or two...can't carry 21.
